The Daily: Red Wings Win Over Boston Bigger Than They’re Letting on; Bruins Blame Lack of Discipline for Loss to Detroit

Following Saturday’s third-period rally for a 5-4 home-ice triumph over the reigning President’s Trophy-winning Boston Bruins, the Detroit Red Wings sought to downplay the value of the victory.

“It means one win,” Detroit forward David Perron was suggesting afterward.

Mathematically, yes. Realistically? Not so much.

The Red Wings already were showing a loss to the Bruins this season as well as a setback against the Florida Panthers, the Eastern Conference rep in the Stanley Cup final last spring. Another defeat to a top Atlantic Division team would have shrouded the good work done by Detroit in the early part of the season.

A loss Saturday would’ve left the Wings at 6-5-1 on the season following a 5-1-1 start. The one win earned, as Perron called it, leaves them at 7-4-1 and the optics of that stat line seem so much more appealing than to be a loss away from sitting at .500 for the campaign after such an impressive outset to the season.

There’s lots of away rinks that the Red Wings don’t enjoy visiting, but Madison Square Garden isn’t one of them. Detroit is 2-1 in the last three games there and 4-3 over that past seven contests. The Wings will be there again to face the Rangers on Tuesday (7:30 p.m. ET).
