Six-foot-six Cossa Plays Big To Extend Grand Rapids Points Streak

The Milwaukee Admirals came to Grand Rapids with a 19-game winning streak and left the city trying to remember how to rebound from a loss.

The Grand Rapids rode a 37-save performance by Detroit Red Wings goaltender prospect Sebastian Cossa to beat the Admirals 4-2 in a battle of two teams in the midst of memorable streaks. The win extended the Griffins’ points streak to 15 games (10-0-2-2). The team hasn’t lost a game in regulation in 47 days.

This was the first time in American Hockey League history that two teams with point streaks of 14 games or longer had met in a game. The Admirals’ 19-game winning streak was the second-longest in AHL history.

Detroit prospects continue to play a major role in the Griffins’ streak with Cross Hanas, Carter Mazur and Marco Kasper all scoring in the game. Jonatan Berggren, the team’s leading scorer during the run, had two assists. The Swedish forward totals 10 goals and 23 points in his last 20 games.

Cossa (drafted 15th overall in 2021) stopped 65 of 67 shots he faced in recording two wins this week. The 6-foot-6 goalie has given up two or fewer goals in eight of his past 11 appearances. Much like his 2022-23 season with the Toledo Walleye, Cossa has improved significantly as this season has progressed. On Monday, he was earning the honor as AHL Player of the Week.

Detroit prospects Amadeus Lombardi and Eemil Viro also picked up assists in the game.

The Griffins’ next game is Wednesday against Iowa. They currently sit second in the Central Division.
