Andrew Copp’s OT Tally Gives Red Wings Win Against Sharks
DETROIT — The Detroit Red Wings finally forced their playoff drive out of neutral.
Andrew Copp scored 25 seconds into overtime to give the Red Wings 3-2 triumph against a San Jose Sharks team that is out of the playoff race. The Red Wings are eight points behind the Pittsburgh Penguins for the final wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference. The Penguins also won in overtime 7-6 against the Florida Panthers.
Copp’s only other overtime goal in his career also came at Little Caesars Arena last season when he played for the New York Rangers.
In the past 10 days, the Red Wings had lost games the Philadelphia Flyers, Arizona Coyotes and Columbus who aren’t in a playoff spot. They have to win the games against non-playoff teams if they want to make up ground in the playoff race.
Coming into this game, the Sharks have lost five of six and given up 27 goals in those six games. That’s an average of 4.5 goals per game
Detroit goalie Ville Husso made 28 saves, including a game-saving stop against Kevin Labanc in the closing minutes of regulation. He got in alone against Husso after stripping the puck away from Detroit defenseman Jake Walman.
The game was tied 2-2 after two periods, thanks to a late goal by Logan Couture. With Husso under siege, Logan Couture bounced a shot off Husso from a bad angle with seven seconds left in the period.
Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson assisted on both of San Jose’s second period goals to give him 49 assists and 64 points in 49 games.

After a scoreless first period, Adam Erne netted his sixth goal of the season when he redirected Dylan Larkin’s shot past goalie James Reimer at 2:17 of the second period. It was Larkin’s 400th career point.
Sharks Tied it Late
The 1-0 lead lasted to 7:58 of the period when Timo Meier, the subject of trade rumors, scored by banking a shot off Husso’s pads from behind the goal line.
The Red Wings regained the lead when Michael Rasmussen scored his eighth of the season from inside the right wing circle with 3:31 left the period.
The Sharks didn’t quite. That put pressure on Husso in the closing in before finally cashing in on Couture’s shot.
Detroit is still without Tyler Bertuzzi who is out with a lower body injury. Bertuzzi hasn’t been practicing.Â
