Detroit Red Wings fans have two games to worry about on Monday. If the Red Wings take care of their business Monday and beat the Montreal Canadiens at Little Caesars Arena, they still need the Bruins to beat Washington to move into the second Eastern Conference wildcard spot. Detroit has another game in Montreal on Tuesday. Detroit has beaten Montreal once in overtime and lost once in OT in two meetings this season.

The Monday scenario is only possible because the Red Wings rose up Saturday to pull off a 5-4 overtime win against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Bob Duff offered a good read on the victory, which included Detroit building, and then losing, a three-goal lead.

Duff called the game the “Cliff Notes” of the Detroit season.

“The resilience that this club continues to display once again rose to the fore to save the day . . . and the season, for that matter,” Duff wrote.

Dylan Larkin scored in OT for what may be the biggest goal of his career.

“You can’t feel any better,” Larkin said. “I knew Kaner was gonna look for that play. Just had to have my stick on the ice and he was gonna hit it. I didn’t even see it go in but I just saw Kaner. All the big moments he’s had in his his career, to see how excited he was, see all the boys rush over. Man, what a feeling.”

The Red Wings continued to play without injured Michael Rasmussen and Andrew Copp. They are key players for Detroit’s penalty killing and checking strategy. Copp has a broken cheekbone and Rasmussen’s injury has been called an upper body issue. The Red Wings have the day off today, meaning there will be no update until Monday morning.

The Red Wings are tied with the Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers for the final wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference. Each team has 87 points. Both the Capitals and Flyers have a tiebreaker advantage (regulation wins) over Detroit. The Flyers have one game remaining, while Detroit and Washington have two. What it means: If the Red Wings win both of their remaining games against the Montreal Canadiens, they still need help. To qualify for the playoffs in that scenario, the Red Wings still would need the Capitals to earn three or fewer points in their two remaining games.

Reports say Boston Bruins Vezina Trophy-winning goalie Linus Ullmark used his modified no-trade clause to nix a trade to a Western Conference team.

Boston Hockey Now’s Jimmy Murphy reported that the team was not the Los Angeles Kings, even though the Kings were aggressively pursuing a goalie.

In accordance with his contract, Ullmark could list 16 teams on his no-trade list. Murphy reported that Ullmark likes living in Boston. Murphy was able to confirm that 14 of the teams on Ullmark’s no-trade list were in the Western Conference.

The Bruins were willing to deal Ullmark because they boast another quality goalie in Jeremy Swayman. He has played 36 games this season, while Ullmark has played 31.

Chafing from back-to-back home-ice losses, the Detroit Red Wings saw another two points chipped away from their lead for an NHL playoff spot on Sunday night. Continuing their impressive run of late, the New York Islanders were whipping the Boston Bruins 5-1.

The Isles hold a game in hand on Detroit and trail the Red Wings by six points in the standings. It was the Islanders who beat Detroit 5-3 Thursday at Little Caesars Arena. Sunday afternoon, the Wings were spanked 4-0 at home by the Florida Panthers. It was the second time this season they’ve been shut out at home by the Panthers.

Let’s look to the week ahead of the Red Wings chase for a playoff spot.

Detroit Red Wings (33-22-6, 72 points)

Games This Week: Wednesday at Colorado; Friday at Arizona; Saturday at Vegas

Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde is aware that things could get ugly quickly for his team. “The biggest thing to staying in these battles is stopping these momentum slides,” Lalonde said. “We knew this would be a tough stretch. Florida, we’re at Colorado and obviously at Arizona, at Vegas back to back. We’re in the hole a little bit. And if you want to stay in this battle, it’s how you get out of these holes.”

That could be easier said than done. They’ve been the losers of six in a row at Colorado. The Avalanche are holding a 31-14 edge on the scoreboard over that span. Detroit is also surprisngly 0-1-2 in the club’s last three visits to Arizona.

New York Islanders (26-20-15, 66 points)

Games This Week: Tuesday vs St. Louis; Thursday at San Jose; Saturday at Anaheim

A Kyle Palmieri hat-trick was pacing the Islanders to their third successive win, a 5-1 drubbing of the Boston Bruins on Sunday night. After Tuesday’s home date with the Blues, the Isles begin a four-game road trip of their own.

Washington Capitals (28-22-9, 65 points)

Games This Week: Monday vs Arizona; Thursday at Pittsburgh; Saturday vs Chicago

Just when it looked as though the Capitals were dead in the water following Tuesday’s 8-3 smacking at Detroit, they rose up and smacked the Philadelphia Flyers 5-2 on Friday. Washington is 5-2 over the past seven games. The Caps are playing three winnable games this week, facing the Coyotes and Blackhawks at home and Penguins on the road.

New Jersey Devils (30-26-4, 64 points)

Games This Week: Monday at Los Angeles; Tuesday vs Florida; Thursday vs St. Louis; Saturday vs Carolina

New Jersey wraps up a road swing Monday at LA. The Kings were 2-1 winners Feb. 15 at New Jersey. The up and down Devils are 1-2 in their last three games and 2-4 over the past six. Latest NHL trade rumors put the Devils in hot pursuit of Calgary Flames goalie Jacob Markstrom.

When the clock strikes midnight tonight, there will be one month remaining before the NHL trade deadline. The Hockey Now network has several stories today about what teams are looking to accomplish.

After going all in last year, Boston Bruins GM Don Sweeney may be dialing back a bit this season. One of the undercurrents of this year’s draft talk is that we won’t see as many first-round picks exchanging hands as we did last season when 13 first rounders (over three draft years) were dealt in the weeks leading up to the 2023 draft.

Teams simply don’t have the first rounders to give, or don’t want to part with a first-rounder two years in a row.

That doesn’t mean they won’t change their mind as deadline draws near.

We have stories about Montreal readying for the trade deadline, and about how Buffalo Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams has multiple discussions with some teams. How many teams are interested in Nashville defenseman Alex Carrier.

Detroit’s Steve Yzerman may have to wait until the last moment to decide whether his team is a buyer or seller. That’s always an issue for teams on the cusp of making the playoffs. The Red Wings have a 50.7% probability of making the playoffs today.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

  • Remember former NHL defenseman Janne Niinimaa? He’s the former Philadelphia Flyers defenseman who was beat by Darren McCarty on Detroit Red Wings’ Stanley Cup clinching goal in 1997. He’s in trouble with the law.
  •  The Red Wings have a shot to establish a new team record for having players scoring 10 or more goals.
  • Nicklas Lidstrom names the most talented teammate he ever had. It’s Pavel Datsyuk.

Red Wings Next Game

Detroit players return to the ice Thursday for the first of two practices before Saturday’s 1 p.m. game against the Vancouver Canucks (34-11-5) at Little Caesars Arena. The Canucks are 8-0-2 in their last 10 and 16-7-3.

Boston: Why the Boston Bruins may be looking through the bargain bins before the March 8 NHL trade deadline. Jimmy Murphy has the story.

Buffalo: It sounds like the Buffalo Sabres will be active at the NHL trade deadline. GM Kevin Adams says he has had multiple conversations with some teams about deals.  Erik Johnson and Victor Olofsson seem like possible trade candidates.

Calgary: Jonathan Huberdeau has instantly chemistry with newly-acquired forward Andrei Kuzmenko. That’s good news for the Calgary Flames.

Montreal: Marco D’Amico explains what’s next for the Montreal Canadiens as they prepare for the trade deadline. The Habs have players who can be moved, including goalie Jake Allen.

Nashville: Michael Gallagher weighs in whether the Nashville Predators will have multiple suitors for Alex Carrier.

Pittsburgh: Lars Eller provides a frank assessment about the Pittsburgh Penguins‘ biggest problems.

Detroit hasn't posted a winning California trip since 2016

Defenseman Ben Chiarot is maintaining optimism that a little bit of California sunshine might be just what the doctor ordered to clear away the gloom that’s clouding the season for the Detroit Red Wings.

“I think heading out on the road will be good for us, getting the team together,” Chiarot said. “We’ll look to build momentum out in California.”

The Mamas & The Papas were California Dreamin’, while the Beach Boys clutched tightly to a perennial California Feelin’. However, anticipating that there’s gold waiting for the Wings in the Golden State as they open a three-game set Tuesday against the San Jose Sharks just might be a reach.

It’s been quite some time since the three-game California gauntlet – San Jose, Anaheim and Los Angeles – has brought a wealth of success to Detroit.

The Red Wings haven’t come back from a California trip with a winning slate since the 2015-16 season (2-1). That was also the last season in which the club qualified for postseason play.

Over that time period, Detroit has managed to tread water on the road against the Sharks (3-3-2) and Ducks (2-2-4), but Los Angeles has proven to be a vast wasteland for the Red Wings. They are 1-6-1 in their last eight away games facing the Kings. Detroit’s last win in LA was a 4-0 shutout triumph on Jan. 5, 2017.

Last season, the Red Wings managed to go 1-1-1 on their California trip. They lost 4-3 at LA, and were beaten 3-2 in OT at Anaheim. A 7-4 win at San Jose gave them a split of the points. It was the first time since 2019 that Detroit had posted a win on the California trip.

Defensive Concerns Still There For Red Wings

Detroit was better without the puck in Sunday’s 5-3 home-ice loss to the Boston Bruins, but it would be a stretch to suggest that the Red Wings were sound defensively.

“Looking back on the game, we easily could have won that game,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. Instead, the Red Wings did just enough wrong to get themselves beat. With a 3-8-1 slate over the past 12 games, they sit three points out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, with four teams – Tampa Bay, Washington, New Jersey and Pittsburgh – that Detroit must climb over to regain that postseason position.

“It’s just a little bit of attention to details,” Chiarot said. “Knowing that you got your guy in our zone, or that there’s five guys in front of you if you’re a defenseman. Whatever the case is, just knowing that you’re in a sound defensive position.

“Just a little more attention to detail I think would be helpful as far as being a stronger defensive team.”

The Red Wings recalled veteran forward Zach Aston-Reese from the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins to join them on this trip.

One notable stat from Sunday’s 5-3 loss to the Boston Bruins was that two-thirds of the goals scored by the Detroit Red Wings came from defensemen.

Jake Walman scored first for Detroit. It was his third goal in two games and ninth of the season. That leaves him a tie for second in the NHL for goals from a rearguard. He also was equaling his career high for goals in season.

Ben Chiarot also scored, briefly moving the Red Wings into a 2-2 before the Bruins would pull back in front.

“It’s great anytime you can get offense from the back end,” Chiarot said. “That will help you win a game but wasn’t enough tonight obviously. As defensemen, we’re always looking to jump in and contribute.”

This season, Detroit defenders are contributing at a pace not seen in over 20 seasons. Walman, Shayne Gostisbehere (seven goals) and Moritz Seider (five) are on track to collect double digits in the goals column.

The Red Wings have 26 goals from defensemen this season, trailing only Colorado (28) and Montréal (27) for the NHL lead.

The last time the Red Wings saw three defensemen score 10+ goals in the same season was in 1999-2000. Steve Duchesne (10), Nicklas Lidstrom (20) and Larry Murphy (10) all did it that season.

The club single-season record is four defenseman wth 10+ goals. That was in 1993-94. Paul Coffey (14), Steve Chiasson (13), Vladimir Konstantinov (12) and Lidstrom (10) formed this quartet.

Compher Finding His Game

Scoring for Detroit during a late third-period power play, center J.T. Compher was extending his point-scoring streak to three games. It was his eighth game back from injury, yet Compher was feeling that he still is seeking to get back to where he was at prior to the injury.

“I think that I still can play better,” Compher said. “I feel like sometimes when you come back, it takes you a couple of games. I still think there’s more to my game.”

Ice Chips

Boston halted the point streak of Red Wings left-winger Patrick Kane at six games . . . With an assist, Red wings forward Alex DeBrincat extended his scoring streak to five games.

Detroit 0-16-1 when scoring less than four goals

The calendar is turning to a new year, but when it comes to succeeding in close, low-scoring games, the Detroit Red Wings remain stuck rolling with last year’s model.

A 5-3 loss to the Boston Bruins on New Year’s Eve wasn’t the scorefest than the final scoreline is suggesting. Boston scored a pair of empty-net goals to get to five on the ledger. Detroit tallied a late power-play goal.

In essence, this was a 3-2 Bruins victory and it’s that outcome that was again underlining the main cause for concern with the Red Wings and any thought of them being a legitimate playoff club.

When things are tight and goals are hard to come by, they simply can’t clamp it down.

As the NHL season gets into January and especially into February, these 5-4 and 6-5 games are going to be the exception. The teams capable of consistently winning the 3-2 and 2-1 games are the clubs that will rule the day.

Detroit clearly isn’t one of those clubs.

“I think that’s kinda part of the maturation of a team, especially a young team,” Detroit defenseman Ben Chiarot said. “Winning those tight games, knowing how to hold a lead.

“Those are things we’re working on here and it takes time to know and be comfortable in how to play those games. That’s something we’re figuring out still.”

Red Wings Lalonde Bristles At Numbers

Detroit is now 0-16-1 when scoring fewer than four goals in a game this season. When that total was brought up to Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde, he got downright indignant in his response.

“That’s a misleading stat because we have two shutouts and a lot of those four-goal games we’ve given one or two or three goals,” Lalonde said.

We decided to humor him and did the math.

Of the 17 games in which the Red Wings hav accounted for fewer than four goals, there’s only three in which they could’ve won had they scored at least three times. There was a 2-0 loss to the Florida Panthers, a 2-1 setback to the Carolina Hurricanes and a 1-0 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers.

The only possible way they could’ve turned the other 14 losses into victories would’ve been by scoring at least four goals.

In other words, the underlying numbers don’t back up the coach’s theory.

Bruins Know How To Get It Done

One thing Lalonde wasn’t going to dispute is that his team still needs to shore up its defensive work.

“Of course our defense needs to improve,” Lalonde said. And against Boston, it did. Just not enough to garner two points.

“Probably our most complete 60 minutes from start to finish in a while,” Lalonde said. “Just came against a team with a very slim margin of error to be successful. It’s a little disappointing. I think they only had one chance in the third and it was a missed face-off assignment and in the back of the net.”

When the Bruins got in front, they showed the Red Wings how an experienced playoff team then plays with the lead.

“That’s their recipe,” Lalonde siad. “They’re a high compete, well-coached team that leans on elite, elite, elite goaltending. That’s a very comfortable game for them.”

It’s a lesson the Red Wings are still learning. And continuing to get failing grades during game night exams.

NHL trade rumors are running rampant to the point that even Santa’s name came up this week in Boston Bruins trade rumors.

No, Santa isn’t being dealt. But Boston Hockey Now’s Jimmy Murphy asked hockey insider Pierre McGuire to speculate on what kind of gift Boston Bruins GM Don Sweeney might need from Santa this Christmas.

“If I were Donny Sweeney,” McGuire said. “I would ask for a center iceman that could manufacture points; a slick center iceman that could manufacture points.”

It’s OK to have some fun now and then, but the Bruins certainly have looked at the available centers. But there are some far more serious news in the trade market this week.

Respected hockey analyst Pierre LeBrun speculates about the possibility of the Pittsburgh Penguins might tear up the roster if they are out of the race at the All-Star break. That would mean selling off Erik Karlsson, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, maybe even Sidney Crosby.

Earlier this week, LeBrun reported the Calgary Flames may be in a holding pattern when it comes to making more trades. Also, St. Louis Blues general manager Doug Armstrong said no member of the Blues team is safe. This came after Armstrong fired coach Craig Berube.

The Boston Bruins, looking for defensive help, are at the front of the line when it comes to interest in Calgary Flames defenseman Noah Hanifin. He is a Boston native and played at Boston College.

TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reported the Flames and Hanifin were close on a deal that would pay him an average of $7.5 million over eight years. But Hanifin decided to halt contract talks after the Flames pulled their offer. It’s still possible the Flames could sign Hanifin for the eight years and trade him.

Bruins general manager Don Sweeney has been dissatisfied with the team’s defensive play of late.

The Flames are open for business. They have already moved defenseman Nikita Zadorov, and they also could move forward Elias Lindholm and defenseman Chris Tanev. Each of those players can be a UFA this summer.

Red Wings in Case You Missed It

  • Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin and wife Kenzy suffer tragic loss.
  • Prospect defenseman Simon Edvinsson’s hot streak continued Friday night with a two-goal performance in a win against the Milwaukee Admirals. Sebastian Cossa stopped 35 shots in the 4-1 victory.
  • J.T. Compher said Robby Fabbri‘s goal vs. the Chicago Blackhawks was the best he’s ever seen.
  •  Paywall story: Here’s a look at several reasons why the the Red Wings are an improved team this season.

Red Wings Next Game

The Red Wings are in Montreal tonight to play the Canadiens. The Red Wings are 4-1-0 since returning from Sweden, outscoring their opponents by a 20-7 margin. Dylan Larkin is expected to play. He missed the last two games because he and his wife, Kenzy, lost an unborn baby. It was due in April.

Calgary: Trevor Neufield writes that “Heart attack hockey is back” with the Calgary Flames. He explains what happened in November.

Chicago: CHN’s Nate Brown has 21 Chicago Blackhawks questions after their first 21 games. You can bet there are some about Connor Bedard who was just named NHL rookie of the month.

Montreal: Now that the Montreal Canadiens have re-signed Samuel Montembeault (three years, $9.45 million), it’s time for GM Kent Hughes to put an end to the three-headed goalie situation.

New Jersey: Just when the New Jersey Devils get Timo Meier back, key defenseman Doug Hamilton is now out indefinitely with torn pectoral muscles.

Philadelphia: Jonathan Bailey writes that goalie Carter Hart needs more goal support. Philadelphia Flyers.

San Jose: Some things cannot be explained: the San Jose Sharks won their first road game of the season.

Peeling off their gear in Stockholm after blowing a 2-0 third-period lead in a 3-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs, a question from captain Dylan Larkin wound up stopping the Detroit Red Wings in their tracks.

“We need to figure out what type of team we’re gonna be,” defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere remembered Larkin asking of the team.

Since that day, the Red Wings have been the kind of team they were at the outset of the 2023-24 NHL season – impressive, explosive and unbeatable.

Sunday afternoon’s 4-1 home-ice verdict over the Minnesota Wild was Detroit’s third successive win. The Red Wings also blanked New Jersey 4-0 at home and won 5-2 at Boston. That’s a 13-3 goal differential during this three-game streak of success.

“I think guys looked at ourselves in the mirror and realized if we do it the right way, we’re gonna get the results,” Gostisbehere said. “It’s really been working.”

Red Wings Developing Winning Traits

Winning isn’t merely measured on the scoreboard. While that’s certainly where the ultimate passing of judgement is taking place, the fact of the matter is all teams must be building a core principle of winning habits in order to get to the top of that mountain of success.

This is what coaches mean when they speak of the process.

Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde cited their unsuccessful 0-1-1 Sweden trip as the type of impact that could’ve derailed a lesser club.

“The Europe one point in two games was a very emotional low,” Lalonde said. “We had to sit on it for a long time. I give our guys credit for handling it well.

“I just think our guys matured a little bit to judge themselves on performance over outcome. That was an example where our performance was not bad, but not good enough. We didn’t get the outcome. I think it’s a step for the group and a little maturity of handling that disappointment in Europe the right way.”

Perron Sees Detroit Growing As A Group

David Perron was a two-goal scorer in Sunday’s win, giving him 300 NHL goals. Rather than boasting of his milestone, he was taking more pride in what he’s seeing developing around him inside the Red Wings locker room.

“I go back to the way we play,” said Perron, a Stanley Cup winner with St. Louis in 2018-19. “We take care of each other. It’s what it’s supposed to feel like.

“We play for each other right now. The winning habits, a lot of good changes, things like that, the things that winning teams do. That’s the process that we have to keep doing.”
