Red Wings Notebook: Captain Larkin Celebrates Milestone Goal

Getting to 200 goals as a member of the Detroit Red Wings was a big deal to captain Dylan Larkin. Doing so by tallying twice against the reigning Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights only served to make the milestone more memorable.

“To do it against that team in a win like we had tonight was a great night,” Larkin said after netting a pair of goals in Saturday’s 5-2 victory over the Golden Knights. He’s now at 201 career NHL goals since joining the Red Wings in 2015.

Larkin is the 16th player in franchise history to achieve 200 goals in a Red Wings uniform. He’s only one tally away from moving into a tie for 15th place with Slava Kozlov (202).

“It’s huge,” Larkin said. “It feels pretty honored to do it at home. It’s something you can have I guess and look back and be proud of.”

Even more significantly, should he join the nine Red Wings players to register 300 goals while wearing a Detroit uniform, hockey immortality could be in Larkin’s future. Of that group, seven are enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame. The other two – Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk – figure to be getting that call in the near future.

Kane Could Play Wednesday

Red Wings forward Patrick Kane missed his sixth successive game on Saturday due to a lower-body injury, but his absence from the Detroit lineup might soon be a thing of the past.

“Patrick has had some positive days here,” Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said. “There is a possibility for Wednesday. That’s something we’ll re-evaluate through two practices Monday and Tuesday.”

Unfortunately, the news was not nearly as uplifting when it came to defenseman Ben Chiarot. He was sidelined for a fourth straight game on Saturday with an upper-body ailment. There’s currently no light at the end of his tunnel in terms of a return to action.

“I don’t expect Ben to be back before the break,” Lalonde said. “We’ll take advantage of the time and hope to see him after the break.”

Husso Back With Red Wings

Fresh off his 25-save shutout for the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins on Frdauy, goaltender Ville Husso was back with the Red Wings on Saturday morningm, getting in a workout and taking some shots.

“I wanted to skate this morning and get moving right away,” explained Husso. “I feel 100% right now.”

He’s missed Detroit’s last 18 games due to a knee injury Husso suffered Dec. 18 against the Anaheim Ducks.

“It was nice to get a game,” Husso said of his brief AHL tour. “It would be a long time no game if I didn’t play before (the NHL All-Star) break so it was nice to get a game in the AHL. At least I know now the body feels good, the knee feels good.”

Defenseman Wyatt Newpower was recalled from the AHL Griffins but didn’t suit up for the game . . . Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider dished out his 100th NHL assist . . . Larkin has racked up 29 points (17-12-29) in 26 games since Nov. 22 vs. New Jersey.
