Bobby was a popular Red Wing. I was dissapointed when he didn’t make the cut on his second season but the management obviously saw something they didn’t want to take a risk on. He was doing really well for us until Blashill’s system started killing the joy for everyone mid-season onwards in his first season and after that didn’t seem to be playing with the same joy and freedom that he did when the season started. I always blamed Blashill for the decline of that season (and last season, and any other season where we started brightly but then bombed out). I think under a different coach, Bobby would have had a better chance to stick around for another year. Blashill had a way of killing players joy for the game and stiffling production of the forwards in particular. You cant play your best if you dont feel joy. You cant play at all if the coach’s system suffocates you.

I’ve seen 16,17,18 year old players drinking in bars and pubs as the owners of the bars turn a blind eye. Too many house parties where kids are offered unlimited drinks after a game.
Some just cannot control it. Ryan is one of many. Doug Harvey, a great defense an for Montreal in the 50’s, died in an alley a drunk and homeless.
Team education is a MUST – and I mean actual team meetings with specialists. Owners and coaches also have to keep the eyes OPEN. The days when a wink from an authority meant ‘don’t worry about the rules’ should be over!!!
