Moneypuck.com says the Detroit Red Wings only have a 16.8% chance of earning a playoff spot. DHN’s Bob Duff explains how difficult it really is for Detroit to earn the playoff spot.

“The Detroit Red Wings aren’t out of the race for the NHL’s second Eastern Conference wild card playoff spot,” Duff writes. “At the same time, to gain that position, they are going to need help.”

Lots of help.

Because Auston Matthews has a shot at scoring 70 goals, the Red Wings face a very motivated Toronto Maple Leafs team tonight. The Red Wings’ last two games are against the Montreal Canadiens. Over the past 10 games, the Habs (5-4-1) own a better record than Detroit (3-4-3).

The Penguins have a more challenging schedule: Boston, Nashville and the New York Islanders. But former Red Wings goalie Alex Nedeljkovic, currently playing every game for Pittsburgh, is 8-0-3 in his last 11 starts.

To make matters worse, Duff explains in his NHL tiebreaker story, the first tiebreaker is regulation wins. Pittsburgh (31), Washington (29) and Philadelphia (29) all have more regulation wins than Detroit (27)

The Detroit Red Wings aren’t out of the race for the NHL’s second Eastern Conference wild card playoff spot. At the same time, to gain that position, they are going to need help.

The Red Wings are sitting with 85 points. That’s the same total as the Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers. It’s one behind the Pittsburgh Penguins, holding down the second wild card placing with 86 points. Pittsburgh’s 6-5 overtime victory over Detroit on Thursday is currently the difference maker in this race.

“I know it doesn’t feel good right now but there’s still a path there,” Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said.

Detroit, Pittsburgh and Washington each have three games to play. Philadelphia is down to two games on the club’s remaining ledger.

Another factor that’s problematic for the Red Wings is that they lose the first tiebreaker to every one of these teams. That’s regulation wins and Detroit has 27 of them. Philadelphia and Washington each have 29, while Pittsburgh owns 31.

What this means is that the Red Wings will need to be a point clear of any challenger in order to claim the posteason position.

Let’s look to the final week of the regular season as the Red Wings continue their chase for a playoff spot.

Detroit Red Wings (38-32-9, 85 points)

Remaining Games: Sat at Toronto, Monday vs Montreal, Tuesday at Montreal.

The Red Wings were 5-2 winners the last time they were the visitors in Toronto on Jan. 14. Former Leafs goalie James Reimer got the win that night. Might Lalonde look to him to again come through?

Detroit is 1-8-2 in the club’s past 11 road games. The Red Wings have also scored two or fewer goals in eight of 19 games since the beginning of March. They’ve been shutout four times during that span.

Pittsburgh Penguins (37-30-12, 86 points)

Remaining Games: Saturday vs Boston, Monday vs Nashville, Wednesday at New York Islanders.

Former Red Wings goalie Alex Nedeljkovic is 8-0-3 in his last 11 decisions for Pittsburgh. Penguins captain Sidney Crosby has points in 13 of his last 15 games overall, accumulating 25 points (9-16-25) in that span.

Thursday’s OT triumph was Pittsburgh’s ninth successive home-ice win (7-0-2) over the Red Wings. The Pens have outscored the Wings 47-22 in that span.

Washington Capitals (37-31-11, 85 points)

Remaining Games: Saturday at Tampa Bay, Monday vs Boston, Tuesday at Philadelphia.

The Capitals are 1-5-2 through their past eight games. The lone win was Tuesday at Detroit.

Washington simply isn’t scoring enough to sustain success. The Capitals have tallied two or fewer goals in each of the past eight games. They are averaging 1.75 goals per game over that span.

Philadelphia Flyers (37-32-10, 85 points)

Remaining Games: Saturday vs New Jersey, Tuesday vs Washington.

A 4-1 win over the New York Rangers on Thursday brought to a halt Philadelphia’s eight-game losing skid (0-6-2). Flyers forward Owen Tippett has 13 multi-point games this season. He has 15 points (6-9-15) in the last 15 games.

The good news is Philly finsihes with consecutive home games. On the other hand, the Flyers are just 3-3-2 over their past eight at home.

A friend will be among the foes tonight when the Detroit Red Wings battle for their playoff lives tonight on the road against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Former Detroit goalie Alex Nedeljkovic has taken over the starting goaltender’s role with the Penguins.

Dan Kingerski of Pittsburgh Hockey Now writes that Nedeljkovic has made nine consecutive starts, and likely will make a 10th tonight against the Red Wings. Nedeljkovic was popular with his teammates when he played for Detroit. The Penguins are 6-0-3 in their last nine games.

“Can Nedeljkovic Continue to Withstand Stresses of His Job?,” Kingerski asks in a paywall story.

Nedeljkovic owns a .913 save percentage in those nine games. He has given up three or more goals, with a save percentage under .900, in five of those nine games.  He did beat the Red Wings 6-3 on March 16 when the two teams squared off in Pittsburgh

Alex Lyon will start in net for Detroit.  He has given up two or fewer goals in four of his last five starts.

Coyotes Finally Relocating?

The NHL seems to be finally giving up on the idea that the Arizona Coyotes will get a new arena built any time soon. The NHL reportedly is working to get the franchise relocated to Utah although nothing is finalized.

Detroit has lost eight of nine

There’s a lot to unpack following the latest Detroit Red Wings setback. Some of it puzzling, much of it alarming.

A 6-3 loss to the Penguins in Pittsburgh on Sunday was Detroit’s eight defeat in the past nine games. That it came one day after James Reimer was backstopping the club to a 4-1 victory to the Buffalo Sabres, ending the Red Wings’ seven-game losing skid, one question immediately popped to mind.

Why wasn’t Reimer Sunday’s starting goalie?

Instead, Detroit coach Derek Lalonde was opting to go back to Alex Lyon between the pipes. Beaten five times on 37 shots, Lyon would allow 4+ goals for the sixth time in seven starts. He’s lost his last seven decisions.

Meanwhile, former Wings goalie Alex Nedeljkovic got the win, improving to 3-0 against Detroit in his NHL career.

Over his seven-game slide, Lyon has given up 25 goals on 197 shots for an .873 save percentage. His game save percentages during the losing skid are .846, .892, .876, .833, .692, .885 and .865.

Lalonde left it open on whether he’d play Reimer on Sunday, noting that Reimer’s age (36) might be a factor. He sought to defend the work of Lyon following Sunday’s loss.

“It’s just a little too much volume on him,” Lalonde told Bally Sports Detroit. “He made some saves early on, gave us a chance.”

Truth be told, pinning this loss on Lyon would be entirely unfair. There were several conspiring culprits at work to create the recipe for Detroit’s latest diastrous performance.

Red Wings Compete Again Questioned

Last week, it was forward Patrick Kane who was expressing worrisome concerns about the compete level of the Red Wings. Following Sunday’s loss, forward Andrew Copp was joining in the chorus.

“We can talk about the execution and that, but it’s about being hard and compete and effort,” Copp said. “I don’t think we did a good enough job of that.”

For the seventh time in eight games, the Red Wings were surrendering the game’s first goal. The Penguins were 2-7-1 over their last 10 games coming into this contest. They’d scored one goal or fewer in six of those games, but were able to light up the Red Wings for six tallies.

Detroit gave up two goals in the last 1:07 of the first period and also coughed up a score with 21 seconds remaining in the second frame.

“It’s kind of defending 101,” Copp said. “You tie up the guy’s stick, you get body position and then you worry about the puck after that.

“We gotta outnumber guys in front of our net and I don’t think we did that.”

The loss was the fifth straight on the road for Detroit. That’s also concerning, considering that eight of the final 14 games of the Red Wings regular-season slate will be played away from Little Caesars Arena. That includes a season-high five-game road trip from March 23-April 1.

The only good news coming Detroit’s way Sunday was that the New York Islanders were 5-2 losers to the New York Rangers. The keeps the Isles one point back of the Red Wings in the chase for the second Eastern Conference wild card playoff spot.

Two events from recent days make it abundantly clear how dire the goaltending situation currently is for the Detroit Red Wings.

First of all, the best goalie with a Red Wings connection in recent days is a former Red Wings netminder. Alex Nedeljkovic scored a goal while on an AHL conditioning stint. Returning to the NHL, he was backstopping the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 3-0 win over the reigning Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights.

Then the supremely confident Nedeljkovic, who’s from Parma, Ohio, wore a Myles Garrett Cleveland Browns jersey while facing the Pittsburgh media post game. It was his none-too-subtle way of pointing out that the Browns downed the Pittsburgh Steelers 13-10 on Sunday.

As for the guys paid to stop pucks in Detroit, none are showing that level of confidence. This would explain why it is that while Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde lists three numbers on his 23-player roster, he doesn’t know which one he should put between the pipes for Wednesday’s game against the New Jersey Devils.

Detroit’s No. 1 goalie status has gone from Ville Husso to who knows?

“We’ll still decide what we’ll do going forward, even Wednesday, with Ville not seeing the ice for a little bit, not being on the trip (to Sweden) with us,” Lalonde said of his netminding situation.

Husso Back On Ice With Red Wings

Husso returned to Detroit from Sweden after his wife Hayley gave birth to their daughter Emmi. Back at work on Monday, Husso knows he needs to step up his game.

“I’m still winning games, so I think that’s the big thing, but of course the goals, you don’t want to let four goals in every game,” Husso said.

Though he’s won three of his past four decisions, Husso has given up three or more goals in nine of 10 starts, and four or more in each of the past three. James Reimer is winless (0-2-2) in his last four starts, giving up eight games over the past two games.

Alex Lyon made his season debut in Friday’s 3-2 loss to Toronto, surrendering all three goals in the third period.

If anything, it’s sounding as though Lalonde might be leaning toward going back to Lyon again on Wednesday.

“All along we were confident to play him at any time,” Lalonde said of Lyon. “He proved very well for us. He looked confident.

“When a goalie looks confident, when he’s stopping the puck, when he’s handling the puck, I think he brought confident into our group, hence the 2-0 lead after 40 minutes against a very good offensive team. He’ll certainly be in the conversation.”

Friday’s 3-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs in Sweden counts as a home game for the Detroit Red Wings. In fact, it counts as the only Detroit home game against Toronto this season. That means even though they’re one of the oldest rivals of the Red Wings, the Leafs won’t be visiting Little Caesars Arena this season.

You might think that’s a rarity – and you’d be dead wrong. In fact, this will be the ninth NHL season in which Toronto won’t be playing a single game at Detroit.

The Leafs didn’t visit the Motor City in 2021, the COVID season in which teams only played opponents in what were reconfigured divisions. The Leafs also weren’t playing at Detroit in 2013, a 48-game season reduced due to a lockout.

During the years when the Red Wings were in the Western Conference and the Maple Leafs were in the Eastern Conference, there were no Toronto visits to Detroit during the 2011-12, 2009-10, 2007-08, 2005-06 and 2003-04 seasons.

Even though Detroit did play home games against Toronto the 1926-27 season, since all the team’s home games were played in Windsor, Ont., there were also no Toronto visits across the border that campaign.

There were a numbers of factors conspiring to cause the Detroit Red Wings to miss the NHL playoffs last season. Goaltending was certainly among them.

When Ville Husso’s game was fading down the stretch, there was no Plan B available to stop the bleeding. Neither Alex Nedeljkovic or Magnus Hellberg were proving to be capable NHL backups.

Certainly, there was no help coming from down on the farm. Jusse Olkinuora didn’t finish out the season with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins. When he did play, Victor Brattstrom usually was playing poorly.

Not offered a new contract by Detroit at season’s end, Brattstrom was opting to return to his native season. However, things aren’t going better for him therte. Recently, he was sent on loan by HV71 of the SHL to Bjorkloven of the Allsvenskan, the Swedish Second Division.

Meanwhile, in Detroit, newcomers James Reimer and Alex Lyon are experienced understudies to Husso this season. And Grand Rapids is getting splendid puckstopping from both veteran Michael Hutchinson and top prospect Sebastian Cossa. Cossa owns a .923 save percentage and 2.50 GAA in four games. Hutchinson is sitting with a 2.52 GAA and .919 save percentage.

Grand Rapids coach Dan Watson believes that access to mentoring from a longtime pro like Hutchinson is an ideal scenario to amp up Cossa’s learning curve.

“Michael’s been around, he’s played for a lot of teams, a lot of different coaches,” Watson said. “He can share those experiences, he can share what it’s like for some of these bus rides after a game.

“I think partnering him up with a veteran like that is gonna help him even more. I’m excited to see him continue to grow here.”

Red Wings Prospects Giving College Try

Two of the top four teams in the NCAA hockey top-10 rankings include Red Wings prospects in their lineups.

The Denver Pioneers are currently ranked second overall. Defenseman Shai Buium (36th overall, 2021) has accounted for 2-2-4 totals through eight games and is plus-7. Buium was part of Denver’s 2021-22 NCAA championship club that also including current Griffins players Carter Mazur and Antti Tuomisto.

Meanwhile, the North Dakota Fighting Hawks are fourth in the rankings. Left winger Dylan James (40th overall, 2022) shows three assists on his ledger from eight games. He drew a helper on Saturday as North Dakota beat the Boston Terriers 5-4 in overtime. Ir was North Dakota’s first win over BU since March 16, 1990.

When the Detroit Red Wings were opening the NHL preseason on Tuesday at Little Caesars Arena against the Pittsburgh Penguins, they were also welcoming home an old friend. Alex Nedeljkovic, a Detroit goalie the previous two seasons, got the start and went the distance for the Penguins in their 4-3 loss.

So how did the Red Wings players acknowledge their old mate?

“You see him and it registers,” Detroit forward Michael Rasmussen said. “You give him a ‘hi’ or a tap on pads in warmup, but once you get out there he’s just a goalie.

Former Red Wings Star Fedorov Talks Pulling Goalie

When Patrick Roy was coaching the Colorado Avalanche, he was revolutionizing the way teams were pulling their goalie. Previously a tactic that wasn’t deployed until the final minute of regulation time, Roy was frequently lifting his netminder for an extra attacker with 2+ minutes to go. Today, it’s commonplace for NHL coaches to be following this strategy.

Another key performer in the Avs-Red Wings rivalry is also changing the strategy for pulling his goaltender. While coaching CSKA Moscow to the past two KHL Gagarin Cup titles, former Detroit star Sergei Fedorov has been known to pull his goalie during regulation overtime.

Speaking on the comment.trainer program in Russia, Fedorov was explaining how this strategy came to be.

“One of my assistants suggested it, and I immediately agreed,” SportExpress.ru reported Fedorov as saying. “Because I saw that the team was gaining a serious advantage. Yes, we conceded to an empty(-net) goal, but we scored more often.”

The move has paid off in a game-winning goal at least four times for CSKA Moscow. So far, it’s only backfired on them once.

To date, no NHL coach is opting to follow Fedorov’s bold strategy in OT. Under NHL rules, pulling a goalie in OT and surrendering a goal would cost the team their bonus point for an OT loss.

Another member of Detroit’s famour Russian Five who is also coaching in the KHL is Igor Larionov. He is gaining acclaim across the league for the creative, attacking style of hockey his Torpedo squad is playing. And now he’ll be bringing that mindset to the masses.

Russia’s famous Podolsk Hockey School is being taken over by Larionov’s Torpedo club. Coaches from the school will be able to serve internships with and attend seminars run by Larionov to gain insight into his unique hockey mind. And Torpedo will be given first dibs on turning pro any players produced by the school.

Among past graduates of the Podolsk school are NHLers Artemi Panarin and Mikhail Sergachev.

Amongst the offseason additions made by the Detroit Red Wings, it’s probably a fair assessment that the one creating the least amount of buzz was the signing of UFA netminder Alex Lyon. In the long run, though, he may prove to be a vital cog if Detroit is to indeed be ending the club’s seven-year playoff hiatus.

Goaltenders appear to be at a premium in the NHL these days. Quality netminders are an even rarer breed of species.

Consider the 2022-23 Red Wings, for instance. Much of last season, they were suiting up one decent NHL puckstopper in Ville Husso.

In the immediate aftermath of the Jeff Petry trade, it’s hard not to view the Detroit Red Wings as big winners. Certainly in the short term they are acquiring a veteran NHL defenseman, while two other NHL teams – the Montreal Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins – will be paying all but 37.5% of Petry’s salary.

So why did this deal make sense for Montreal? The Canadiens will be getting Gustav Lindstrom, who was figuring to be Detroit’s seventh defenseman, and a conditional fourth pick. Expectations are that Lindstrom might even start out with Montreal’s AHL farm club, the Laval Rocket.

Bottom line, this is nothing more than a salary dump from Montreal’s perspective. As much as Petry would’ve helped them, it wasn’t going to be enough to make the Canadiens into a playoff team, so why climb the standings and lessen their chance of hitting the draft lottery?

Red Wings In Case You Missed It
