Husso Hurt Less Than Nine Minutes Into His Return from Injury

The Ville Husso Tuesday return from an eight-week injury was cut short by another injury. The Detroit Red Wings netminder left at 8:48 of the first period when he was hurt trying unsuccessfully to prevent a goal by Edmonton Oilers’ player Leon Draisaitl.

“Unfortunately, he hurt himself previous to the goal, hence him not being able to move laterally on the goal,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “It’s very unfortunate for him, especially because he’s fought and worked very hard to get back to this point. Going to be a setback again, we’ll know a little bit more probably tomorrow. It feels very similar to his previous injury there.”

This was Husso’s first NHL game since he suffered a lower body injury Dec. 18 against the Anaheim Ducks.

“We all feel for him,” Detroit center Joe Veleno said. “We don’t know what the circumstances are. Obviously we’re gonna know in the next couple of days. A guy just works hard and wants to be part of our team, which he is, and wants to play games, wants to help us win. I think we all feel for him. When he got to the bench we were all kind of in shock a little bit, wondering what happened. We hope he’s okay.”

The Oilers won the game 8-4 after scoring five in the third period on goalie Alex Lyon.

The Red Wings reported Husso suffered a lower body injury and didn’t return to the game. Lyon entered the game as Husso’s replacement and James Reimer, the team’s No. 3, dressed in case Lyon was injured. He is allowed to don his uniform and gear, but cannot sit on the bench.

The team didn’t say whether the new injury was related to his previous injury.

Husso did have a conditioning assignment with the Grand Rapids Griffins and posted  a shutout against the Belleville Senators. Husso made 25 saves.

The Finnish netminder started the season as Detroit’s No. 1 goalie, but while he was on the injured list, Lyon played sharply and established himself as a new starter.
