The Detroit Red Wings are left with two must-win games remaining on the NHL schedule in order to keep their playoff hopes alive. And as they arrive are Game 81 of the campaign, they are still facing the same question they’ve been dealing with for much of this season.

They don’t know who their go-to goalie is.

Left with a home-and-home set against the Montreal Canadiens on Monday-Tuesday to close out the regular season, do the Red Wings stick with veteran James Reimer? He got the win on Saturday in Toronto in his 500th career NHL game, drawing rave reviews from the team.

“The ultimate teammate,” was how captain Dylan Larkin was describing Reimer to Bally Sports Detroit. “He’s got the best attitude, coming to the rink with a smile.

“He gave a great speech after the game about how lucky he was to play one game, let alone 500.  It was a great locker room atmosphere after that game.”

Clearly, Reimer is giving the club a boost during his limited opportunities to work between the posts.

“He just battles,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “No matter what happens, we know we’re gonna get the most out of him and when he battles, I think it just lifts the group.”

He’s 7-2 over his last nine decisions. However, the 36-year-old puckstopper has been given successive starting assignments just once since late December.

Lyon Carrying Load For Red Wings

Since returning from injury in late December, journeyman veteran Alex Lyon, 31, has been seeing the bulk of duty between the pipes for Detroit. He’s been in the net in 36 of the last 45 games played by the Red Wings.

This season, Lyon has established career highs for games (43), wins (20) and shutouts (two).

“It speaks volumes for him as an individual, where he is in his career,” Lalonde said. “He’s a career minor leaguer. He was signed to be our starter in Grand Rapids and here he is giving us a chance this late in the season.

“It speaks really well on him.”

However, Lyon’s numbers of late aren’t tracking toward success. He’s 2-10-3 over his last 15 decisions. Granted, wins and losses by a team don’t rest solely on the shoulders of the netminder. Still, Reimer is coming off a big win. Will the Wings ride with him at home on Monday?

Husso Was Supposed To Be The Guy

At the outset of the season, Ville Husso was the de facto No. 1 goalie for Detroit. However, a pair of lower-body injuries have put him on the shelf for all but nine minutes of action since Dec. 18. Husso was to play a rehab assignment Friday with AHL Grand Rapids. However, he didn’t make it through the warmup. Lalonde indicated that Husso suffered a tweak to his injury.

That the Red Wings are contending for the playoffs without a true No. 1 goalie is a tribute to the work that Lyon and Reimer are delivering.

“There will be a lot to reflect back on this season,” Lalonde said. “For us to lose our starting goaltender and for us to be as competitive as we’ve been in that position speaks volumes on both those guys.

“They’ve been excellent for us.”

Friday was to be comeback night for Detroit Red Wings netminder Ville Husso. Recovering from a lower-body injury, he was going to see his first game action guarding the net for Detroit’s top farm club, the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins.

Husso, though, didn’t make it through the pre-game warmup. After taking some shots in the Griffins net, Husso left the ice prior to the conclusion of the warmup. He was seen conversing with the Griffins training staff after leaving the ice.

When the Griffins would skate out for their game against the Rockford IceHogs, Sebastian Cossa was the starting goalie. Carter Gylander was backing him up.

“Ville Husso is now unavailable for tonight’s game,” the Griffins posted on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter. “Sebastian Cossa will be in net.”

Following the game, Griffins coach Dan Watson was offering no update on Husso’s condition, only that he was told the netminder wouldn’t be available for the game. It was uncertain whether the Detroit goalie would be accompanying Grand Rapids to Chicago for Saturday’s game against the Wolves.

Injury-Plagued Season For Husso

Slated to be Detroit’s No. 1 goalie at the outset of the season, Husso has seen action in one NHL game since December. The Finnish puckstopper would suffer a lower-body injury in a Dec. 18 game against the Anaheim Ducks at Little Caesars Arena.

Husso sat out Detroit’s next 20 games while recovering from the ailment. Following a rehab stint at Grand Rapids in which he would post a 25-save shutout against the Belleville Senators, Husso was back in the Red Wings net for a Feb. 13 game at Edmonton against the Oilers. Just 8:48 into that game, He would suffer another lower-body injury and depart.

“I guess it’s part of it,” Husso said earlier of his injury struggles this season. “It’s one of those years that everything goes not your way. It’s been tough but it’s hockey. I’ll be stronger when I come back.”

He was slated to see his first game action since that injury on Friday.

The Giffins lost 2-0 to the IceHogs, thus ending their 19-game home-ice point streak. As well, Cossa’s franchise-record 19-game point streak also was coming to a halt.

Sharing the Red Wings net with Alex Lyon and James Reimer, Husso is 9-5-2 in 19 games, with an .892 save percentage and 3.55 GAA.

Goalie Ville Husso moved a step closer to moving into the Detroit Red Wings goaltending mix when he was loaned to the Grand Rapids Griffins for a conditioning stint.

“It’s been a long road but I feel good now and hopefully get a couple games in GR soon,” Husso said. “The last couple weeks have been better. Feel good now. More mentally try to prepare like we make the playoffs and then be an option. That’s been my biggest thing the last couple of weeks.”

Husso hasn’t played since Feb. 13 when he was injured after playing just over eight minutes against the Edmonton Oilers. He started the season as the team’s No. 1 goalie. Husso was 9-5-2 before the injury, but had a 3.55 goals-against average and an .892 save percentage.  Alex Lyon is now the Red Wings’ No. 1 goalie.

The Griffins play Friday at home against the Rockford IceHogs and then play Saturday and Sunday on the road against the Chicago Wolves.

This is the second time this season Husso has had a conditioning assignment in Grand Rapids. On Jan. 26, Husso posted 26 saves for Grand Rapids to shut out the Belleville Senators.

This injury is not related to his first injury. Husso said he might have come back too soon from his first injury. The Red Wings have never disclosed either injury.

“Yeah, different stuff,” Husso said. “I guess it’s part of it. It’s one of those years that everything goes not your way. It’s been tough but it’s hockey. I’ll be stronger when I come back. I feel pretty comfortable now.”

Husso said there was no consideration for shutting down for the rest of the season.

“Not in my head, never,” he said. “I wish I could have recovered a little faster, been almost eight weeks since I played last game. I wish we’ll make the playoffs and you never know what’s going to happen. In my head the last couple weeks I was like make sure I’m ready if I get the call to play here or wherever. There was no thoughts that I would not play (again) this year.”

Detroit Red Wings goalie Ville Husso doesn’t drive a DeLorean, his nickname isn’t Marty McFly, but he is heading back to the future. And that’s terrible news for both him and the team.

Meeting with reporters prior following Thursday’s pre-game skate in Vancouver, Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde was sharing the bad news that Husso is out week to week due to a lower body injury. It’s the second lengthy absence for the Detroit goalie this season due to a lower body ailment. He was hurt barely nine minutes into his return to NHL action on Tuesday against the Edmonton Oilers.

“It’s very unfortunate for him, especially because he’s fought and worked very hard to get back to this point,” Lalonde said on the team’s website.

A knee injury Husso suffered Dec. 18 at Little Caesars Arena against the Anaheim Ducks put the Finnish netminder on the shelf for 18 games. Any way you slice it, if the Red Wings are going to make a run at an NHL playoff spot over the final 3o games of the season, their goaltender is in the hands of journeyman veteran Alex Lyon.

So far, Lyon has answered the bell. Though he faltered in Tuesday’s 8-4 loss to the Oilers, overall, Lyon has provided steadiness between the pipes. In 23 games, he’s been good for 14 wins, a 2.76 goals-against average and .915 save percentage.

However, he’s already well over his previous single-season NHL games played high of 15. How will Lyon hold up down the stretch when he has to keep playing night after night?

Fabbri A Father

Robby Fabbri’s personal leave from the Red Wings will be coming to an end when he rejoins the club for Saturday’s game at Calgary. Fabbri took to social media revealing the reason for his absence. The news is delightful.

Fabbri and his wife Kass have welcomed their first child, a girl. Fabbri put a post of their new daugher on his Instagram account.

Red Wings Heading To Ohio Stadium

Will the Red Wings be the next Michigan squad to put a whipping on a team from Ohio at Ohio Stadium? Though there’s been no official confirmation of this news from the NHL, published reports are suggesting that the Red Wings and Columbus Blue Jackets will be playing an outdoor game at the famous horseshoe in the Buckeye State.

It will be part of the NHL Stadium Series and would take place on March 1, 2025.

The Detroit Red Wings will provide an update today on Ville Husso’s health at their morning skate. Husso suffered another injury (lower body) in the first period of the Red Wings’ 8-4 loss to the Edmonton Oilers Tuesday. The Finnish netminder had just returned to the lineup after eight weeks on the injured list.

Husso left after a giving up a goal to Leon Draisaitl, but coach Derek Lalonde said he was hurt before that goal.

Alex Lyon has been playing impressively, but Husso’s return — provided he played well — would giveLalonde another option. Husso has played well in stretches in his time in Detroit. The Red Wings certainly don’t want to overwork Lyon who has already played the most NHL games (23) he has ever played in season.

Lyon’s .759 save percentage (seven goals, 29 shots) against Edmonton was his worst of the season. Coach Derek Lalonde hasn’t yet said who will play tonight against Vancouver in the second game of the road trip. James Reimer is Lyon’s backup until Husso is ready again. Husso had looked sharp in his one conditioning start for the Grand Rapids Griffins. He posted a 3-0 shutout against the Belleville Senators.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

  • Red Wings loan defenseman Jared McIsaac to a team in Switzerland. The details are in Bob Duff’s notebook.
  • Goalie Ville Husso didn’t get through the first period in his first game back from eight weeks on the injured list. We should receive more information about his latest injury today.
  • Behind the paywall: Former Red Wings prospect Albin Grewe can’t stay out of trouble in Swedish hockey.
  • Detroit prospect Jack Phelen suffered a lower body injury and will be out of action for a while in the USHL.

Red Wings Next Game

Coach Derek Lalonde will be looking for his Detroit squad to rebound after playing a disastrous third period in an 8-4 loss to the Edmonton Oilers Tuesday.  It was the first time this season, the Red Wings have given up seven or more goals. The Red Wings beat Vancouver in overtime on Saturday in Detroit.

The Ville Husso Tuesday return from an eight-week injury was cut short by another injury. The Detroit Red Wings netminder left at 8:48 of the first period when he was hurt trying unsuccessfully to prevent a goal by Edmonton Oilers’ player Leon Draisaitl.

“Unfortunately, he hurt himself previous to the goal, hence him not being able to move laterally on the goal,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “It’s very unfortunate for him, especially because he’s fought and worked very hard to get back to this point. Going to be a setback again, we’ll know a little bit more probably tomorrow. It feels very similar to his previous injury there.”

This was Husso’s first NHL game since he suffered a lower body injury Dec. 18 against the Anaheim Ducks.

“We all feel for him,” Detroit center Joe Veleno said. “We don’t know what the circumstances are. Obviously we’re gonna know in the next couple of days. A guy just works hard and wants to be part of our team, which he is, and wants to play games, wants to help us win. I think we all feel for him. When he got to the bench we were all kind of in shock a little bit, wondering what happened. We hope he’s okay.”

The Oilers won the game 8-4 after scoring five in the third period on goalie Alex Lyon.

The Red Wings reported Husso suffered a lower body injury and didn’t return to the game. Lyon entered the game as Husso’s replacement and James Reimer, the team’s No. 3, dressed in case Lyon was injured. He is allowed to don his uniform and gear, but cannot sit on the bench.

The team didn’t say whether the new injury was related to his previous injury.

Husso did have a conditioning assignment with the Grand Rapids Griffins and posted  a shutout against the Belleville Senators. Husso made 25 saves.

The Finnish netminder started the season as Detroit’s No. 1 goalie, but while he was on the injured list, Lyon played sharply and established himself as a new starter.

Expect Husso to play on road trip

The Detroit Red Wings will be without forward Robby Fabbri for at least the start of the club’s current four-game road trip.

At Monday’s practice, the veteran forward was an absentee.

“Personal reasons,” Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde explained. “I don’t expect him to be away from our team long. So, he’s not going to go on the front end of the trip.”

Fabbri will likely only miss Tuesday’s game at Edmonton.

“We expect to have him in Vancouver (on Thursday),” Lalonde said.

Husso To Play On Road Trip

Out of NHL action since suffering a knee injury Dec. 18 against Anaheim, the chance for Ville Husso to again guard the net for the Red Wings is looming.

Could it be Turesday against the Oilers? Lalonde insists he hasn’t made that decision yet.

“Yep, I’d expect to see Husso on this trip,” Lalonde said. “I just don’t know when but we’ll get him the net here soon.”

Husso did post a shutout in a 3-0 AHL win recently for the Grand Rapids Griffins while on a conditioning assignment.

Griffins, Stevens Part Ways

The Red Wings and center Nolan Stevens on Monday mutually agreed to terminate his NHL contract. This move makes Stevens an unrestricted free agent.

The 27-year-old is a veteran of six AHL seasons, playing 289 games in the league. Originally a 2016 draft pick of the St. Louis Blues, in his first season with the Red Wings organization, Stevens was good for 3-8-11 numbers and a plus-nine rating through 31 games for the Griffins.

Due to the AHL rule limiting the number of veteran players enable to suit up for a game, Stevens has been a healthy scratch on several occasions this season.

He originally signed a one-year, $775,000 contract with Detroit on July 3. Stevens spent last season on an AHL contract with the Utica Comets.

The idealistic notion that an athlete shouldn’t lose his starting position to an injury has long been wishful thinking more than reality.  Pro sports history, including the Detroit Red Wings, is full of stories about athletes replacing injured players and claiming the job.

The most famous injury replacement story in sports came in 1925 when New York Yankees starting first baseman Wally Pipp missed a game because of a headache. He was replaced by 21-year-old Lou Gehrig who ended up playing 2,130 consecutive games.

In the NHL, in 1938,  future Hall of Fame goalie Tiny Thompson, a four-time Vezina trophy recipient, was injured in preseason. Frank Brimsek replaced for the start of the season. Thompson returned in the third game, but Brimsek had played so impressively well in his first two starts that the Bruins soon decided to trade Thompson to the Detroit Red Wings. Thompson had been the Bruins goalie for more than a decade.

That’s why NHL players, particularly goalies, are always concerned about where they fit when they come back from injuries. Ville Husso, considered the starter earlier, hasn’t played since Dec. 18. He is coming back now with Alex Lyon owning Detroit’s net.

Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said he hasn’t talked to Husso who probably already knows his situation. NHL coaches go with the hot hand. Right now, it’s T Lyon.

“It’s more about (Husso) just being healthy again,” Lalonde said. “He’s getting his game in order. He’ll get the net here sometime soon. I don’t know when. I don’t know that we’ve gone down that path of not losing his job or anything like that. It’s more about Ville getting his game back in order and when he gets that net be ready and be sharp.”

Goalie Rotations Are All Day-to-Day

Most NHL goalies understand that if a goalie falters, be it for injury or poor performance, the backup goalie will get his chance to play. If he continues to win, then he will get the net. Lyon started this season as the No. 3 goalie. He didn’t play a single game until Nov. 17.

Now, Lyon is a workhorse goalie. He played 12 of Detroit’s 13 games in January. He went 8-2-2. Lyon boasts a 2.51 goals-against average and a .922.

Husso does have a winning streak (9-5-2) this season, but he had a bloated 3.53 goals-against average and .893 save percentage when he was receiving the bulk of the starts.

“That goalie position can change instantly,” Lalonde said. “You’ve seen it through three goalies this year. We had two goalies go on IR ; I don’t know if anyone else in the league had had two goalies on IR for an extended period of time. Alex Lyon didn’t see the net for six weeks and all the sudden we need him for 13 out of 14 games. They’re mature and professional enough to know this can change rapidly.”

Don’t forget that James Reimer is also still on the roster. They will continue to carry three goalies.

Undoubtedly, all of them understand how this works: Lalonde is going to play the goalie who keeps winning. Right now, that’s Lyon. But they all know that can change.

You can debate whether Detroit Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider is having a good season, which is the popular trend in hockey analytics circles of late.

What isn’t up for debate is whether Seider is a recognized star in the NHL. Yet his is one of many whose star won’t be given the opportunity to shine during the Four Nations Faceoff being put on by the NHL and NHLPA. This tourney will take place in February of 2025. It’s a launching point paving the way toward returning NHL players to the 2026 and 2030 Winter Olympic Games.

The best players from Canada, the USA, Sweden and Finland will contest this event. It will be held at sites in Canada and the USA. Expectations are that Boston and Montreal will be the host cities for the tournament.

Seider’s Germany, the reigning IIHF World Championship silver medalists, aren’t getting an invitation to the dance. Neither is the Czech Republic and David Pastrnak of the Boston Bruins. Russia is also excluded due to the country’s ban by the IIHF due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“There are other players not sitting on this stage right now that are a little upset,” NHLPA executive director Marty Walsh pointed out during the announcement of the four nations event at the NHL All-Star Game in Toronto.

Seider Part of German Resurgence

Led by their big three of Seider, Leon Draisaitl of the Edmonton Oilers and Tim Stutzle of the Ottawa Senators, Germany can be classified as an emerging hockey power. The Germans lost to Canada in last spring’s world tourney gold-medal game. In 2018, German was beaten by Russian in the gold-medal match at the Winter Olympics.

When available, Seider has never turned down the chance to represent his country on the international stage.

“It’s a great honor,” Seider has said in the past. “Always nice to put the jersey over your shoulder pads and sing the national anthem after you win.

“It’s always a big honor and we’ve taken very big strides in the last couple of years. It’s definitely promising progress for us.”

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman claimed that logistics of trying to assemble a larger tournament is such a short time simply wasn’t feasible. While it’s east to make the league the villain here, the NHLPA could have equally stood up for all of their players and fought for a true World Cup. As it is, World Cups are set to be held in 2028 and 2032.

On the surface, the four nations event feels like nothing more than a cash grab. Certainly, sending four of the hockey world’s establishment out to play against each other is unlikely to do much to grow the game.

Is a half-baked tournament better than none at all? Ultimately, that’s what’s to be debated here.

Which Red Wings Will Play?

The fact of the matter is that they are playing, and while Seider won’t be, several other Red Wings figure to be involved.

Lucas Raymond will be in Sweden’s lineup. Ville Husso and Olli Maatta will have a chance to make Finland’s roster. Captain Dylan Larkin, Alex DeBrincat and Patrick Kane should all be in the reckoning for the Team USA squad.

Kane might be someone for whom this event could serve as a final hurrah in international hockey. He’ll be 37 by the time the next Olympics come around.

Getting to 200 goals as a member of the Detroit Red Wings was a big deal to captain Dylan Larkin. Doing so by tallying twice against the reigning Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights only served to make the milestone more memorable.

“To do it against that team in a win like we had tonight was a great night,” Larkin said after netting a pair of goals in Saturday’s 5-2 victory over the Golden Knights. He’s now at 201 career NHL goals since joining the Red Wings in 2015.

Larkin is the 16th player in franchise history to achieve 200 goals in a Red Wings uniform. He’s only one tally away from moving into a tie for 15th place with Slava Kozlov (202).

“It’s huge,” Larkin said. “It feels pretty honored to do it at home. It’s something you can have I guess and look back and be proud of.”

Even more significantly, should he join the nine Red Wings players to register 300 goals while wearing a Detroit uniform, hockey immortality could be in Larkin’s future. Of that group, seven are enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame. The other two – Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk – figure to be getting that call in the near future.

Kane Could Play Wednesday

Red Wings forward Patrick Kane missed his sixth successive game on Saturday due to a lower-body injury, but his absence from the Detroit lineup might soon be a thing of the past.

“Patrick has had some positive days here,” Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said. “There is a possibility for Wednesday. That’s something we’ll re-evaluate through two practices Monday and Tuesday.”

Unfortunately, the news was not nearly as uplifting when it came to defenseman Ben Chiarot. He was sidelined for a fourth straight game on Saturday with an upper-body ailment. There’s currently no light at the end of his tunnel in terms of a return to action.

“I don’t expect Ben to be back before the break,” Lalonde said. “We’ll take advantage of the time and hope to see him after the break.”

Husso Back With Red Wings

Fresh off his 25-save shutout for the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins on Frdauy, goaltender Ville Husso was back with the Red Wings on Saturday morningm, getting in a workout and taking some shots.

“I wanted to skate this morning and get moving right away,” explained Husso. “I feel 100% right now.”

He’s missed Detroit’s last 18 games due to a knee injury Husso suffered Dec. 18 against the Anaheim Ducks.

“It was nice to get a game,” Husso said of his brief AHL tour. “It would be a long time no game if I didn’t play before (the NHL All-Star) break so it was nice to get a game in the AHL. At least I know now the body feels good, the knee feels good.”

Ice Chips

Defenseman Wyatt Newpower was recalled from the AHL Griffins but didn’t suit up for the game . . . Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider dished out his 100th NHL assist . . . Larkin has racked up 29 points (17-12-29) in 26 games since Nov. 22 vs. New Jersey.
