Axel Sandin Pellikka was recently awarded the Borje Salming Trophy as the best Swedish-born defenseman in the Swedish Hockey League. With Simon Edvinsson now playing as a Detroit regular, Sandin Pellikka is unofficially the Red Wings’ top prospect. Meanwhile, Sandin Pellikka has played a key role in helping his Skelleftea team take a 3-1 lead in their SHL semifinal series against Frolunda.  If Skelleftea wins Game 5 today, Sandin Pellikka will be the SHL Final playing against Rogle.

It’s clear this player, called “ASP” by some fans, has the potential for a bright future in this sport. That is impressive considering when Sandin Pellikka was younger, hockey was not on his radar.

He was a cross-country skier, like his dad, until one Christmas when his grandfather gifted him hockey equipment.

“It quickly became hockey that mattered,’ Sandin Pellikka said in a recent conversation highlighted on Reddit.

Big performances from a pair of Detroit Red Wings defensive prospects are highlighting the quarterfinals of the SHL playoffs.

Already, Axel Sandin Pellikka (17th overall, 2023) and Skelleftea are through to the semifinals. They swept aside Linkpoing, and Sandin Pellikka was a big reason why this was so.

Over the four games, Sandin Pellikka would account for a goal and two assists. And what a massive goal it was. He would score in the third overtime period of Game 3, bringing to an end the sixth-longest game in SHL playoff history.

With star defenseman and team captain Jonathan Pudas missing through injury, Sandin Pellikka, 19, is stepping up to help fill that void. He would log average ice time of 27:40 over Skelleftea’s four quarterfinal games.

He’s also making it a habit to net huge tallies. It was Sandin Pellikka’s OT marker against Switzerland in the quarterfinals at the world junior championship that was moving Sweden into the gold-medal match.

Red Wings Johansson Making Most Of Chances

While Sandin Pellikka’s elite offensive skills are what have the Red Wings excited about his potential, don’t sleep on fellow defensive prospect Anton Johansson (105th overall, 2022). Skating in the third pairing and garnering just 11:47 of ice time per game for Leksands IF, Johansson is certainly making the most of his opportunities when he’s taking his shifts.

Leksands was facing elimination in Game 6 of their quarterfinal series against Frolunda. Johansson would pot a goal and dish out an assist in a 5-2 victory. Over the six games, he’s been good for two goals and two assists. That ties Johansson for the team scoring lead.

Leksands is using 2016 Red Wings draftee Filip Larsson in goal. He’s gone 3-0-1 with a shutout, a 1.68 GAA and .936 save percentage.

Game 7 between Leksands and Frolunda is set for Wednesday, with a 1 p.m. ET start. The winner of the contest will be opening the best-of-seven semifinal series against Sandin Pellikka and Skelleftea on Friday.

The Detroit Red Wings couldn’t find an overtime winner on Tuesday when they desperately needed it. They could’ve used Axel Sandin Pellikka.

The defenseman chosen 17th overall by the Red Wings in the 2023 NHL entry draft was an OT hero on Tuesday in the Swedish playoffs. While Detroit was falling 4-3 in OT at Washington in a game with massive implications on the Stanley Cup playoffs, Sandin Pellikka was scoring to push Skelleftea to within a win of advancing in the SHL quarterfinals.

Sandin Pellikka’s tally would end the third-longest playoff game in Swedish history. He netted a power-play goal after 116 minutes and 23 seconds of elapsed time to give Skelleftea a triple-OT win over Linkoping, also by a 4-3 count.

“Extreme relief,” Swedish website Aftonbladet reported Sandin Pellikka telling Sweden’s TV4 following the game. “We had some pizza left after the third period, so we wanted to go home and eat it. So it was extremely nice that it went in.”

Red Wings Pick Scores On Power Play

The game came up just three minutes shy of becoming the longest-ever SHL game. In 1997, Leksand and Färjestad played a record 119:16.

“The worst thing is that the skates weigh 50 kilos more,” Sandin Pellikka said. “But we go through ‘hell week’ every summer training. So we have good fitness in the team.”

Sandin Pellikka, who just turned 19 on March 11, wound up skating a team-high 42:15 during the six-period contest. His winning goal was registered while Skelleftea was enjoying a power play. He also would collect an assist, five shots on goal and a plus-one rating for the game.

The talented rearguard finshed the SHL regular season with 10 goals and eight assists. By comparison, Tampa Bay Lightning defensive superstar Victor Hedman accounted for seven goals as an 18-year-old playing in the SHL.

In three playoff games, Sandin Pellikka is showing 1-2-3 totals.

The honors just keep on coming for Detroit Red Wings draft pick Trey Augustine. The Michigan State Spartans freshman netminder is among 10 semifinalists earning nomination for the Mike Richter Award, given annually to the top goalie in men’s NCAA Division I hockey.

Michigan State has set program records for conference wins (15) and points (48) and the first-year goaltender is a big reason for those developments. Augustine, 19, the youngest netminder in the NCAA, ranks in a tie for fourth in shutouts (3) and fifth in victories (19). He’s sixth in winning percentage (.714). Augustine’s 899 saves rates fifth among NCAA goaltenders, while his 1706:20 minutes played in the MSU goal crease is 14th nationally.

“It’s definitely been a challenge adapting to the pace of play up there but I think I’ve done a pretty good job of getting used to it now and feel like I’m getting more comfortable game by game,” Augustine said.

The 41st player chosen in the 2023 NHL entry draft when the Red Wings were calling his name, Augustine won a world junior gold medal with the USA earlier this year. He wound up leading the tournament in both goals against average (1.75) and save percentage (.936). Augustine was a perfect 4-0 – including wins in the semifinal vs. Finland and the final vs. host nation Sweden. He was playing in his second world juniors, winning silver in 2023.

Big Star In Big Ten

Augustine was also earning recognition last week as the Big Ten second star. Backstopping MSU to a pair of wins over rival Michigan, the netminder from South Lyon, Mich. would stop 66 of 69 shots he faced.

The Richter Award list will be further trimmed down to three finalists in early March. The winner will be announced at the Frozen Four in St. Paul, Minn. on April 12.

Sandin Pellikka Lights The Lamp

Red Wings draftee Axel Sandin Pellikka, 18, is the hottest shooter among teenage defensemen in the SHL. Still, it had been awhile since he was illimunating a red lamp.

During a 5-3 victory over MoDo, the player Detroit chose 17th overall in the 2023 draft would tally a goal and two assists. It was Sandin Pellikka’s 1oth goal of the SHL season, but his first since Dec. 7.

Red Wings Pick Gibson Is Rolling

It’s been a productive second half of Feburary for Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds defenseman Andrew Gibson. Over his past five games the player Detroit tabbed with the 42nd selection of the 2023 draft is good for four goals and seven points.

The 6-foot-4, 206-pound rearguard has nine multi-point games this season. They include four three-point games and a four-point outing. He’s showing 11-29-40 totals from 56 games. Gibson, who turned 19 on Feb. 13, is sitting with a plus-36 rating, tying him for fifth in the OHL.

TSN’s Top 50 NHL-affiliated prospects list, compiled by Craig Button, included two Detroit Red Wings players, although not in the order Detroit fans might have guessed.

Grand Rapids Griffins defenseman Simon Edvinsson, generally considered Detroit’s top prospect, was ranked 25th. Defenseman Axel Sandin Pellikka was listed at No. 8. Sandin Pellerin was drafted with the 17th pick last summer and has played remarkably well.

Skelleftea player Sandin Pellikka received an “A” grade from Button, meaning he projects to be a top pairing defenseman, while Edvinsson has a B grade. His projection would be as a top 4 defenseman. Edvinsson has been as high as No 3 on a previous year’s Button list.

Edvinsson is closer to the NHL than Sandin Pellikka, but Button undoubtedly sees a higher ceiling for Sandin Pellikka.

Goalie Sebastian Cossa did not make the list, even though the Red Wings are pleased with his progress, particularly his play over the past two months. His absence is made more noteworthy by the presence of Minnesota goalie prospect Jesper Wallstedt who was drafted after Cossa in the 2021 draft. Button ranked Wallstedt 18th on his latest list.

Another candidate for the list would have been center Nate Danielson who is playing well (21 points in 16 games) for Portland in the Western Hockey League. But he didn’t make the cut

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

  • Former Detroit Red Wings player dies at 91
  • Detroit defenseman Ben Chiarot is the self-proclaimed “OT Assassin.”
  • Goalie Sebastian Cossa is making steady progress as a Detroit prospect.

Red Wings Next Game

The Red Wings play the St. Louis Blues today at noon in a matinee game at Little Caesars Arena. Who’s hot: Patrick Kane scored the game-winning goal with 1:18 remaining in overtime. Kane netted the 15th overtime goal of his NHL career (regular season and playoffs combined), which is the third most by a U.S.-born player behind Johnny Gaudreau (16) and Max Pacioretty (16).

It was the old Red Wings getting the better of the future Red Wing in Wednesday’s Champions Hockey League final. Swiss club Servette Geneva edged Sweden’s Skelleftea 3-2 in the title game to determine the top club team in Europe.

In posting the victory, Servette Geneva forward Valterri Filppula was also making hockey history. He’s the last active player from Detroit’s most recent Stanley Cup winner in 2007-08. Filppula is also among 30 players who are members of the triple gold club. He’s captained Finland to gold-medal performances at the Winter Olympics and the IIHF World Hockey Championship.

However, once he was hoisting the Champions Hockey League trophy aloft on Wednesday, Filppula was joining a club of which he is the only member. No player previously was showing Stanley Cup, Olympic and world titles and a Champions League crown on their hockey resumes.

“I am happy to join other big European names with my record,” Filppula told RTSsport.ch. “I was lucky to be able to play for so long and to have been part of teams capable of winning. It makes me proud.”

Filppula would dish out an assist on Sakari Manninen’s first-period power-play goal that gave Servette Geneva the lead at 2-1. In 13 CHL games, he would account for three goals and seven assists. Filppula tallied twice in the Swiss club’s semifinal win over Finland’s Lukko Rauma.

Also playing a key role in the victory for the Swiss team was goaltender Jussi Olkinuora. Earning the win, the Finnish netminder was turning aside 23 shots.

After signing with the Red Wings last season, Olkinuora spent the first half of the 2022-23 campaign with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins prior to returning to Europe.

Red Wings Prospect Sandin Pellikka Blanked

Not so fortunate on the day was 2023 Red Wings draftee Axel Sandin Pellikka. Only recently back from an upper-body injury he suffered while playing for Sweden at the IIHF World Junior Championship, defenseman Sandin Pellikka was held off the scoresheet. The 17th player chosen in last year’s NHL entry draft saw 14:21 of ice time during the contest. He had three blocked shots.

Detroit Red Wings prospect defenseman Axel Sandin Pellikka, sidelined since suffering an undisclosed injury at the World Junior Championships, is returning to Skelleftea’s lineup in the Swedish Hockey League. He is scheduled to play against Modo today.

Sandin Pellikka (drafted 17th overall in 2023) is enjoying a noteworthy rookie season in the Swedish Hockey League.  The dynamic and elusive 18-year-old player has scored nine goals in 25 games. When he was drafted, TSN draft analyst Craig Button compared his style to former NHLer Sergei Zubov.  Sandin Pellikka is an offensive defenseman who does pay attention to his defensive responsibility.

In just a few months, Sandin Pellikka has established himself as one of the top prospects  in the Detroit system. Simon Edvinsson is No. 1 and Sandin Pellikka is probably No. 2 and Nate Danielson or Marco Kasper is No. 3

Gibson Leads Greyhounds in Plus-Minus

The Red Wings seem pleased with the progress Soo Greyhounds defenseman Andrew Gibson (drafted 42nd overall) is making this season. He has scored seven goals, already matching last season’s total. He has 31 points in 47 games.

Gibson leads his team in plus-minus (+29).  He’s a right-shot defenseman, which makes him even more intriguing. He’s 6-foot-4, 206 pounds.

The Greyhounds (32-12-2-1) lead the Ontario Hockey League west division. They have a two point lead over the Saginaw Spirit.

Buchelnikov Has 10 Goals

When it comes to knowing when Russian prospects are coming to the NHL, it feels as if we are back in the cold war era. The absence of Russia from international competition seems to have added some uncertainty to the situation.

Some Russians are urging their younger players to say and play at home. Roman Rotenberg, SKA coach and the first vice president of the Russian Ice Federation, recently urged young Russians not to move so quickly to the NHL.

“They understand that in the USA it’s not smeared with honey,” Rotenberg said

Meanwhile, Dmitry Buchelnikov continues to grow as a prospect. He has 10 goals and 22 points for Vladivostak in the KHL.  He recently earned KHL Rookie of the Week again.

The Philadelphia Flyers’ acquisition Jamie Drysdale may just be the first of several moves the team may make before the NHL trade deadline.

Jonathan Bailey writes for PHN that the Flyers have eight desirable defensemen on their roster. There have been several reports about teams making calls to Philadelphia about who they might be willing to move. Sportsnet hockey insider Elliotte Friedman reported that the Toronto Maple Leafs have interest in Rasmus Ristolainen, but the Flyers were not eager to move him.

But Drysdale’s arrival could change everything.

As Bailey points out, Philadelphia coach John Tortorella likes left-shooting Travis Sanheim playing the right side. Now, Philadelphia has three right-shot defensemen in Drysdale, Ristolainen and Sean Walker.

Walker is a solid defender and will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. He would be a good candidate to move to a contender as a rental.

The Flyers have said they will not forsake their rebuilding plan, even though they are in contention to make the playoffs.  That sounds like they won’t turn down a good offer for Walker.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

  • Michael Rasmussen has seven goals in 14 games. That’s not an amazing streak. But his nine goals on the season give him a shot at 20 goals. When you consider his other contributions, that’s a noteworthy total. Bob wrote an insightful column Monday about how valuable Rasmussen is starting to be for the Detroit squad.
  • Axel Sandin Pellikka‘s injury is a tough blow for a player who was enjoying a remarkable season as an 18-year-old in the Swedish Hockey League.
  • The Red Wings are going to face a string of quality teams this month. This schedule will give us a better understanding of whether they have a legitimate shot to make the playoffs.
  • No word officially, but it seems likely that Alex Lyon (4-1 in his last five starts) will start for Detroit against the Oilers.

Red Wings Next Game

The Edmonton Oilers have won eight in a row and 16 of their last 19. They will be the Red Wings opponent at Little Caesars Arena Thursday night. The Red Wings have won four of their last five, but will need a strong 60-minute defensive effort against an Oilers squad with dynamic offensive potential.

Evidently, his heart may not be the only part of Detroit Red Wings prospect Axel Sandin Pellikka’s body that was broken at the recent IIHF World Junior Championship.

Swedish wedsite Sportbladet.se broke the story that Sandin Pellikka will be missing a significant portion of the SHL season. According to the report, the Detroit first-round puck suffering a serious injury while playing for Sweden at the WJC. While the story wasn’t revealing the exact nature of the injury, Sandin Pellikka did undergo x-rays following the tournament to determine the extent of the damage. Expectations are that he will be missing in action for as much as 1-2 months.

Skelleftea team doctor Karin Granberg was telling Swedish website Norran.se that Sandin Pellikka was dealing with a serious upper-body injury.

“Axel has suffered an upper body injury and is in a plaster cast,” Granberg wrote in a text message to Norran. He declined to be more specific on the nature of the injury.

According to the report, Sandin Pellikka played through the injury during the WJC. He gained recognition as the tournament’s top defenseman. Sweden won the silver medal, losing 6-2 to the USA in the gold-medal game.

Accounting for six points (2-4-6) in seven games, Sandin Pellikka’s tally included an overtime winner in the quarterfinals against Switzerland.

Banner Season For Sandin Pellikka

This was just the latest honor the game was bestowing upon Red Wings hopeful Sandin Pellikka. In his first season since Detroit made him the 17th overall selection of the 2023 NHL entry draft, the 18-year-old is leading all SHL defenders with nine goals.

Skelleftea is playing Czech club Vitkovice in the Champions League semi-finals on Thursday but will be doing so minus their teenage sensation.

Robert Ohlsson, coach of Skelleftea, Sandin Pellikka’s club in the SHL, was confirming the injury to Sportbladet.

“It is true that he is injured and that our doctors need to look at him,” Ohlsson told Sportbladet. “What I know now is that he won’t play for the next week anyway. It’s sad.”

Skelleftea goaltender Mattias Hallberg also acknowledged the serious nature of his teammate’s injury to Swedish website Expressen.se.

“What I can say is that he was examined with an x-ray here in Växjö yesterday and unfortunately it shows an injury which means that he is not available for games for the next few weeks,” Hallberg said.

“We in the fellow team are optimistic and believe that his rehabilitation process will go well. We expect him to be fully recovered soon and ready for full play again in a few weeks.”

For the fifth tournament in succession, there will be Detroit Red Wings prospects adorned with medals at the IIHF World Junior Championship. Sweden is playing the USA for the gold medal on Friday. Detroit picks Axel Sandin Pellikka (17th, 2023) and Anton Johansson (105th, 2022) play on the Swedish defense. Trey Augustine (41st, 2023) is a goaltender for Team USA.

Augustine made 19 saves to earn the win as the USA edged Finland 3-2 in one of Thursday’s semifinal games. The Michigan State Spartans netminder won a bronze with the American squad at last year’s tournament, prior to his being selected by the Red Wings in the NHL entry.

Sweden downed Czechia 5-2 in the other semifinal. The host nation for the tournament got a goal and an assist from Sandin Pellikka, who plays for Skelleftea in the SHL. Sandin Pellikka shot the puck into a gaping Czech net to put the Swedes ahead 2-1.

“As soon as I look up, there is basically no goalkeeper there,” Sandin Pellikka told Swedish website Aftonbladet.se. “Then it was just a matter of sending it in.”

Later, he drew the primary assist on the power-play goal that gave Sweden the lead for good at 3-2.

It was Sandin Pellikka’s overtime goal giving Sweden a 3-2 victory over Switzerland in the quarterfinals.

The Swedes were receiving a surprise visit from a Swedish hockey icon prior to Thursday’s game. Hockey Hall of Fame netminder and 2006 Olympic gold medalist Henrik Lundqvist game the squad a pre-game pep talk.

“It was perhaps what made us win,” Sandin Pellikka said. “It is difficult to understand what he has done for the New York Rangers as an organization and how great he really is. It’s great fun.”

Red Wings Pick Savage Earned Bronze in 2023

Last year, Red Savage (114th, 2021) was the only Red Wings pick playing in the WJC. Currently a teammate of Augustine’s at Michigan State, Savage was part of the USA squad that won bronze.

In 2022, Detroit picks gathered up a half dozen medals. Goalie Sebastian Cossa (15th, 2021) and defenseman Donovan Sebrango (63rd, 2020) won gold with Canada. Defenseman Emil Viro (70th, 2020) was picking up a silver with Finland. Forward Theodor Niederbach (51st, 2020) and defensemen Simon Edvinsson (6th, 2021) and William Wallinder (32nd, 2020) won bronze with Sweden.

Viro also won a bronze medal with Finland at the 2021 tournament. In 2020, center Joe Veleno (30th, 2018) and defenseman Jared McIsaac (36th, 2018) were golden with Canada. Forward Jonatan Berggren (33rd, 2018) and goalie Jesper Eliasson (84th, 2018) were earning bronze for Sweden.
