Red Wings Snap Losing Streak With 3-2 Shootout Win

Once upon a time, a St.Louis Blues – Detroit Red Wings game in the spring was usually a heated playoff game. Though both teams are likely out of the playoff picture, there was still plenty of excitement, especially since the game featured so many players who once called the other city home.

Battling into the third period with two goals aside, the tilt went to overtime and finally a shootout with the Red Wings prevailing 3-2 on the lone shootout goal from Lucas Raymond. The win snapped a three-game losing streak.

Alex Chiasson notched his fourth goal of the season and it was Filip Zadina tying it at two later on in the first. From there it was a back and forth affair that saw close chances at both ends, but nothing more on the scoreboard.  Raymond had several chances throughout regulation but narrowly missed on a handful. He’d make up for it in the shootout, tallying the only goal in four attempts for both teams.

Netminder Magnus Hellberg played strong, standing tall with 20 saves and three critical ones in the shootout.

The Red Wings outshot the Blues and were seemingly buzzing all night. But the Blues dominated overtime, with Detroit getting a few chances, and the eventual winner coming from Raymond’s stick in the shootout

Red Wings Keep Their Heads Above Water in the Win-Loss Column

With the shootout win, Detroit moves to 31-30-9, and grabbing its 71st point of the season. But the key metric for the Red Wings in the victory is avoiding their first sub 500 record of the entire season. While draft positioning has taken the forefront of conversation, momentum is certainly something Detroit would like to have.

On a team that relied on several call ups with regulars missing, the Red Wings answered the bell and triumphed in a tight game. They’ll face St. Louis at home on Thursday to grab a season sweep.
