Derek "Newsy" Lalonde coached his first NHL victory on Friday.

Detroit Red Wings coach Derek “Newsy” Lalonde got a win in his NHL debut as a head coach for the Detroit Red Wings. Fittingly, it was a 3-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens in Detroit’s season opener.

It was fitting because the previous time Newsy Lalonde was coaching an NHL game in Detroit, it was also involving the Canadiens. Edouard “Newsy” Lalonde was behind the bench for the Canadiens on March 18, 1934 at Olympia Stadium. They beat the Red Wings 2-1. He’s the Hockey Hall of Fame legend from whom Derek Lalonde derives his nickname.

Jack Adams was behind the Detroit bench that night. And should the new Newsy find a way to lead the Red Wings into a playoff posiiton, he just might be in line to win the Jack Adams Award as NHL coach of the year.

Tough Start For Griffins

The Red Wings were whipping up on the Canadiens. However, the Grand Rapids Griffins were taking a whipping on home ice. Detroit’s top farm club fell 6-2 to the San Diego Gulls in the AHL season opener at Van Andel Arena on Friday.

Firstly, in his first pro game, forward Cross Hanas was -3, as was veteran D Brian Lashoff. Secondly, both forward Givani Smith and defenseman Eemil Viro were -2.

On a positive note, defenseman Simon Edvinsson was even, collecting an assist on the first Grand Rapids goal.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

  • Scoring the game winner in his NHL debut, Elmer Soderblom was propelling Detroit to a 3-0 victory over Montreal.
  • For the first time in franchise history, the Red Wings were opening the NHL season at home against the Montreal Canadiens
  • Grand Rapids Griffins getting AHL season underway
  • Could the Red Wings be an NHL playoff team this season?
