John St Ivany - Red Wings?

Don’t be expecting the Detroit Red Wings to be showing interest in college defenseman Jack St Ivany. Even if it does appear that he could be turning into this summer’s version of Jimmy Vesey.

Over a dozen graduating college players were becoming unrestricted free agents on Monday when the NHL teams drafting them were opting not to tender contracts. St Ivany was playing at Boston College the last two seasons and Harvard before that. He was let go by the Philadelphia Flyers.

It’s unlikely that the Detroit Red Wings, with a plethora of defensemen already in the prospect pipeline, will be entering the bidding for St Ivany. However, Dave Molinari of Pittsburgh Hockey Now is reporting that the Pittsburgh Penguins are holding significant interest in St Ivany.

That shouldn’t be surprising. Penguins GM Ron Hextall was GM of the Flyers when they selected St Ivany in the 2018 NHL entry draft.

In the summer of 2016 it was Vesey creating a buzz in NHL circles when he was signing as a UFA with the New York Rangers. However, his definition as an NHLer is as a journeyman. Six NHL seasons have seen Vesey suiting up for five clubs.

Last season, the Red Wings didn’t sign college goalie Keith Petruzzelli. He ended up inking a free-agent deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Former Red Wings Goalie Hellberg Turning Heads Again

When he signed late last season with the Red Wings, the goalie gear of Magnus Hellberg was turning heads. He only got to use it for one NHL game in Detroit.

Signing in the summer with the Seattle Kraken, Hellberg is again causing a commotion with the unveiling of his slick Seattle set up designed by Brian’s.
