North American KHL players being advised to get out of Russia now
Some former Detroit Red Wings and Grand Rapids Griffins are being advised to get the heck out of Russia.
Firstly, the war between Russia and Ukraine is escalating. Secondly, political uncertainty in Russia is growing more problematic. Due to this powder keg sceanrio, the Canadian goverment is advising Canadian players skating in the KHL that it might be time to get out while the getting’s good.
There are 48 Canadians currently playing in the KHL, the most foreign players from any country. Goaltender Andrew Hammond, a recent NHLer, signed two weeks ago with Chelyabinsk Traktor.
Two players with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins last season are skating in the KHL. Ryan Murphy is with Ufa Salavat Yulaev, while Dennis Yan plays for Nizhny Novgorod Tirpedo.
Former Detroit Red Wings Teemu Pulkkinen (Chelyabinsk Traktor), Adam Almquist (Chelyabinsk Traktor) and Jake Chelios (Kunlun Red Star) also are KHL players.
