Guys who miss camp and preseason usually have down years. He probably felt he was playing catch up from Oct-Dec. 18-20 goals is a reasonable expectation for next season.

good question. my guess is SY really wanted Copp enough that he was willing to sign him on the mend from core surgery.

After surgery Copp was ahead of schedule and figured he’d be ready for the season. Maybe he had a small setback or maybe it took him a bit longer to get used to playing with his new teammates who often changed due to injuries. Some of both I’ll bet.

Copp says he expects to have a better season 23/24 getting back near to his top form. In goals that probably means 20 plus. He plays a solid-plus game on offense and defense and should be thought of as one of the key Red Wings players…which fits into why S.Y. signed him to a longer contract.

He’s yet another Wings player who’s primed and ready to have a much improved season.
