TSN is seeing the Red Wings currently as the #3 team in the NHL.

The Detroit Red Wings are 5-1 on the NHL season. They’re riding a five-game win streak and also riding high in the view of the national hockey media.

Canada’s TSN was releasing its first NHL Power Rankings of the season on Monday. It wasn’t at all surprising to see the last two teams to win the Stanley Cup, the Colorado Avalanche and Vegas Golden Knights, occupying the top two slots. However, No. 3 was a bit of a shocker.

It’s the Red Wings.

TSN is viewing Detroit at the moment as the third-best team in the league. According to data from Sportlogiq, the Red Wings own an NHL-best 2.50 average goal differential. TSN is describing the Red Wings as “the surprise story of the season so far.

“Detroit leads the league in goals per game, ranks second in expected goals and is top 10 at producing shots from the inner slot, while also ranking top 10 allowing these high-danger shots,” TSN noted. “Alex DeBrincat, who leads the league in points, has fit like a glove on a line with Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond. The trio has scored an NHL-best eight goals together at 5-on-5 while conceding only two.”

A Sobering Red Wings Thought

There is one sobering note in all of this celebratory mood. As great as the launch to the season has been for the club, Bally Sports Detroit, broadcaster of Red Wings games, was unwittingly opening a window into to the reality that it can all come crashing down.

They were pointing out in a social media post that the only team in franchise history to score more goals than the current team (30) through the first six games of the NHL season was the 1972-73 edition of the Red Wings. That club tallied 31 goals while opening the campaign 6-0.

However, they ended up 37-29-12 for 86 points, missing the playoffs by two points.
