Marian Hossa’s time with the Detroit Red Wings was certainly brief, but no one can deny that it was also quite memorable. Signed as an unrestricted free agent, he would be leading the team in goal scoring as the reigning Stanley Cup champion Red Wings were making a return visit to the Stanley Cup final.

This time, though, the Pittsburgh Penguins – losing finalists and Hossa’s team the spring prior – win the Cup final series in seven games over Detroit. When Hossa was making the decision that summer to leave the Red Wings, signing as a UFA with the Chicago Blackhawks, it was not well received in Hockeytown.

For years, Red Wings fans would relentlessly boo Hossa during his return visits to Detroit wearing the jersey of the rival Blackhawks. However, the three Stanley Cups Hossa won while in Chicago likely was softening the blow of that verbal abuse.

Almost 15 years later, appearances are that all is forgiven. Nine former Red Wings players were among those feting Hossa with a farewell match on Friday in Trencin, Slovakia.

Joining Hossa for testimonial match as part of a who’s-who of hockey were Nicklas Lidstrom, Henrik Zetterberg, Daniel Alfredsson, Tomas Holmstrom, Petr Mrazek, Tomas Kopecky, Jiri Hudler, Tomas Tatar and Andreas Lilja.

Red Wings Got Money’s Worth From Hossa

During his one campaign in Detroit, Hossa would score a team-leading 40 goals. He remains the most recent 40-goal scorer in franchise history.

Among others who were skating in the game to honor Hossa’s Hall of Fame career were Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Zdeno Chara, Martin Havlat, Ziggy Palffy, Teuvo Teravainen, Michal Handzus, Jaroslav Halak, Miroslav Satan and Marian’s brother Marcel Hossa. In total there were 41 Stanley Cup wins on the ice.

Marian Hossa’s NHL career would end suddenly following the 2016-17 season due to a rare skin condition. His finishing totals as an NHLer were 525 goals and 1,134 points from 1,309 career games.

In 2020, Hossa was earning enshrinement to the Hockey Hall of Fame. Last season, the Blackhakws were opting to retire his No. 81 jersey.

There should be something for nearly everyone during Red Wings games during the upcoming season.

Among the giveaways this season are bobbleheads for old (Brendan Shanahan, Tomas Holmstrom) and new (Alex DeBrincat, Jake Walman) Red Wings players

The Shanahan bobblehead will be available for, appropriately enough, St. Patrick’s Day (March 16 vs. Buffalo). The  Joe Louis Arena speakers would blare an Irish Jig when Shanahan would score in his Detroit heyday. Holmstrom’s will be given out on Sweden Night (Nov. 9 vs. Buffalo).

Walman’s bobblehead will be available Jan, 21 vs. Tampa Bay, while DeBrincat’s bobblehead will be handed out on March 2 vs. Florida.

Something For All Red Wings Fans

There will be giveaways of things you’d expect (the Opening Night Rally Towel giveaway on Oct. 4 vs. Tampa Bay) and those you didn’t know you needed (like the Thanksgiving Eve Gravy Boat Giveaway Nov. 22 vs. New Jersey).

Fans can expand their wardrobes on Military Appreciation Night with a camo hat (Nov. 11 vs. Columbus), a knit hat (Nov. 26 vs. Minnesota) and the Ugly Sweater T-shirt giveaway on Dec. 22 vs. Philadelphia.

Three all-time favorite Red Wings will be honored on Hockey Heritage Night Stick Case Giveaways: Dominek Hasek (Dec. 14 vs. Carolina), Sergei Fedorov (Jan. 25 vs. Philadelphia) and Darren McCarty (Feb. 22 vs. Colorado, naturally).

Other giveaway nights include one honoring former goalie Mike Vernon’s entry into the Hockey Hall of Fame, including a mini-goalie mask giveaway (Dec. 9 vs. Ottawa), and something called the Mo Flow Grow a Hair giveaway on Jan. 11 vs. Edmonton.

One night that involves fan participation is Star Wars Night (Oct. 21 vs. Winnipeg), with no shortage of Darth Vaders, Princess Leias, and Luke Skywalkers roaming the corridors of Little Caesars Arena.

Interesting isn’t it, that the man charged with selecting the players who will be the future of the Detroit Red Wings is in fact the gold standard when it comes to players drafted by the Detroit Red Wings.

No draft pick has ever turned out better for the team than the fourth overall selection of center Steve Yzerman, today the club’s general manager. Wings fans are hopeful that Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider, Yzerman’s initial first-round picks, will be the Yzerman and Nicklas Lidstrom for the next generation of Red Wings teams.

However, the fact of the matter is that seven-time Norris Trophy winner Lidstrom wasn’t a first-round pick. Neither were Sergei Fedorov, Pavel Datsyuk or Henrik Zetterberg. In fact, the majority of home-grown talent that’s excelled while wearing the Winged Wheel came up aces for Detroit long after the first round concluded on draft day.

What once made the Wings the gold standard of NHL teams is that they managed to mine the later rounds of the NHL entry draft for both all-star and frequently, even Hall of Fame talent.

These are the top-10 scoring Red Wings who were drafted by the team.
