Picking his most skilled Detroit Red Wings teammate wasn’t as easy for Nicklas Lidstrom as the seven-time Norris Trophy winner made the game appear while he was spending two decdes in Detroit as a generational NHL defenseman.

There were, after all, many all-time greats who lined up alongside Lidstrom over his time with the Red Wings.

“I played with Steve Yzerman, Sergei Fedorov, Igor Larionov, Brett Hull,” Lidstrom recently told Hockey Morning, a feature of Swedish website Aftonbladet.se. None of them, though, are the answer to the question of who was Lidstrom’s greatest NHL teammate.

Pavel Datsyuk is the most skilled player I have ever played with,” Lidstrom said. “Datsyuk’s skill and what he could do with the puck . . . he is the best I have ever played with.”

Red Wings Battles With Chelios

Among Lidstrom’s fondest memories of his time in Detroit is watching the daily one-on-one challenges between Datsyuk and Hall of Fame defenseman Chris Chelios during regular Red Wings pratice sessions.

“He and Chris Chelios used to compete in taking the puck from each other,” Lidstrom was recalling. “At the time, Chelios was over 40 years old and was an incredibly competitive person. But Datsyuk just played with Chelios, who was a tough guy to face. He didn’t get hold of the puck.”

Along with the sensational skill that enabled Datsyuk to put together successive 90-point campaigns in Detroit, Lidstrom also recollected the uniqueness of the stick that the Russian forward would use.

“He had a long stick and an almost straight blade, not a nice angle,” Lidstrom explained. “But his stick technique and his movement patterns . . . you couldn’t believe it when you saw him off the ice and then on the ice and the things he did.”

Datsyuk registered 314 goals and 918 points in 953 games with the Red Wings. He was a three-time winner of the Selke Trophy as the NHL’s best defensive forward and a four-time winner of the Lady Byng Trophy due to his combination of high-end skill and gentlemanly play.

Together as teammates, Datsyuk and Lidstrom won two Stanley Cups. Datsyuk retired in 2021. He’ll be on the Hockey Hall of Fame ballot for the first time this year and is expected to join Lidstrom as an enshrinee in short order.

Last time Detroit went 3-0 in Calfornia, the team won the Cup

It’s been almost 16 years since the Detroit Red Wings went 3-0 on a West Coast swing through the state of California. All they need to do so this season is a win on Sunday at the Honda Center over the Anaheim Ducks.

Already, good omens are moving into Detroit’s corner thanks to the outcome of this road trip. At 2-0, the Red Wings are guaranteed of their first winning California trip since also going 2-1 during the 2015-16 campaign.

You know what else happened for the Wings that season that hasn’t happened since? That’s right, the club made the Stanley Cup playoffs.

You’ll need to go all the way back to the 2007-08 season to find the Red Wings going 3-0 through California. And that was also an epic campaign for Detroit. It’s the most recent season in which the club won the Stanley Cup.

Interestingly, that trip followed the same script that’s unfolded so far on this journey. It was undertaken during the month of January. First, there was a win in San Jose. Next, came a victory at LA, followed by a win in Anaheim.

Here’s how that 3-0 run unfolded for Detroit:

Jan. 19: Red Wings 6 at San Jose Sharks 3

Detroit blew a 2-0 lead in the second period, but then scored three unanswered goals over the final 10 minutes of the frame to claim a 5-2 lead.

Tomas Holmstrom and Nicklas Lidstrom scored power-play goals for the Red Wings, with Kris Draper adding a shorthanded tally. Lidstrom, Henrik Zetterberg and Dan Cleary each counted a goal and two assists. Brian Rafalski dished out three helpers.

Jan. 22: Detroit 3 at Los Angeles Kings 0

Chris Osgood stopped all 27 shots he faced for the shutout in LA. Detroit would score once in each period – Holmstrom (first), Mikael Samuelsson (second) and Johan Franzen (third).

Samuelsson led all Red Wings scorers in the game with a goal and an assist.

Jan. 23: Red Wings 2 at Anaheim Ducks 1

The toughest win to get was the last one. Rafalski put Detroit in front with a first-period power-play marker during a 5-on-3 advantage. In the second period, Valtteri Filppula potted the eventual game winner, his 15th goal of the season.

The reigning Stanley Cup champion Ducks would counter with a third-period power-play of their own from Chris Pronger midway through the stanza.

Dominik Hasek stopped 24 of 25 shots for the win.

Technically, Alexander Lundqvist isn’t part of the Detroit Red Wings organization. At the same time, it would be patently wrong not to consider him as a member of the Red Wings’ extended family.

That’s because Lundqvist, a defenseman in the SHL with Leksands IF, is the nephew of a Detroit Hockey Hall of famer. Lundqvist’s uncle is a Red Wings legend, seven-time Norris Trophy winner Nicklas Lidstrom.

And his uncle, who certainly knows a thing or two about playing defense, is liking what he’s been seeing of late from his nephew on the ice.

“I think he has been good and stable in the game when he has had more ice time,” Lidstrom, currently vice-president of hockey operations for the Red Wings, told Swedish website Aftonbladet.se. “And he just signed a new contract too.”

Shortly after inking that new long-term deal with Leksands, Lundqvist was collecting a goal and an assist in a 4-1 win over Malmo.

Teammate Of Red Wings Draftee

Lundqvist is skating on the same Leskands defense with Detroit 2022 draft pick Anton Johansson. Johansson is currently playing with Sweden at the IIHF World Junior Championship.

His father Stefan Lundqvist was a longtime SHL player for Brynas. Undrafted in the NHL, Alexander Lundqvist, 22, has accounted for 3-4-7 totals in 28 games with Leksand this season. He’s averaging 20:47 of ice time per game and is a plus-nine.

Lidstrom also has three of his sons playing at a high level of hockey this season. His son Samuel, 23, is playing this season Mjolby, a new team in Hockeyettan, the third tier of Swedish hockey. He’s a forward.

The youngest Lidstromg sibling, Lucas, 19, is playing for the Wings in 2023-24 – the Aberdeen Wings of the NAHL. They’re situated in South Dakota. Just like dad, he’s a defenseman.

The oldest of the four Lidstrom sons, Kevin, 29, hung up his skates in 2021 after playing nine pro seasons in Sweden, mostly in Hockeyettan. Adam, 27, a center, is playing this season for Visby/Roma in Hockeyettan.

Friday’s 3-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs in Sweden counts as a home game for the Detroit Red Wings. In fact, it counts as the only Detroit home game against Toronto this season. That means even though they’re one of the oldest rivals of the Red Wings, the Leafs won’t be visiting Little Caesars Arena this season.

You might think that’s a rarity – and you’d be dead wrong. In fact, this will be the ninth NHL season in which Toronto won’t be playing a single game at Detroit.

The Leafs didn’t visit the Motor City in 2021, the COVID season in which teams only played opponents in what were reconfigured divisions. The Leafs also weren’t playing at Detroit in 2013, a 48-game season reduced due to a lockout.

During the years when the Red Wings were in the Western Conference and the Maple Leafs were in the Eastern Conference, there were no Toronto visits to Detroit during the 2011-12, 2009-10, 2007-08, 2005-06 and 2003-04 seasons.

Even though Detroit did play home games against Toronto the 1926-27 season, since all the team’s home games were played in Windsor, Ont., there were also no Toronto visits across the border that campaign.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

  • It looks as though defenseman Jake Walman is going to be out for Detroit. Does that mean prize prospect Simon Edvinsson will be in?
  • Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin was okay after being roughed up in a loss to Ottawa
  • Alex Lyon was making his first start in goal for Detroit this season in Friday’s loss to Toronto
  • Red Wings Hall of Famer Nicklas Lidstrom is the first winner of the Borje Salming Courage Award

Red Wings Next Game

Returning home, Detroit will be playing host to the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday. The puck drop is set for 7 p.m. ET.

Atlantic Division

Montreal: What are the Montreal Canadiens to do with the problem that is Josh Anderson?

Boston: Did Boston Bruins coach Jim Montgomery quash the speculation that the team might be trading Vezina Trophy Winner Linus Ullmark.

Florida: Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov left Friday’s win over Anaheim with an apparent left knee injury.

Toronto: Anders Salming, whose dad played for both the Red Wings and Maple Leafs during a Hall of Fame career, was the ceremonial puck dropper prior to Friday’s Detroit vs Toronto game in Stockholm.

Hockey Now Network

Pittsburgh: Former Red Wings goalie Alex Nedeljkovic wound up scoring a goal for AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Friday.

Philadelphia: Not trading defenseman Travis Sanheim might be the best move the Philadelphia Flyers didn’t make during the NHL offseason.

Islanders: Penalties are killing the New York Islanders.

New Jersey: Injured New Jersey Devils star forward Jack Hughes was returning to practice on Friday.

Washington: Former Red Wings forward Anthony Mantha will be back with the Washington Capitals on Saturday. He was missing for three games with a punctured eardrum.

Carolina: Forward Ryan Suzuki was assigned to AHL Springfield by the Carolina Hurricanes.

Chicago: Veteran forward Corey Perry is proving to be worth every penny that the Chicago Blackhawks invested in him.

Colorado: The Colorado Avalanche are emerging as another contender in the Patrick Kane sweepstakes.

Nashville: Is forward Egor Afanasyev about to get a recall to the Nashville Predators?

Vegas: The Vegas Golden Knights were outscoring the Montreal Canadiens 6-5.

San Jose: The San Jose Sharks have almost as many win songs (two) as they have wins (three) this season.

Red Wings Legends Advocate for NHL to Make Neckguards Mandatory https://detroithockeynow.com/2023/11/18/red-wings-legends-advocate-nhl-make-neckguards-mandatory-lidstrom-zetterberg-walman/ Sat, 18 Nov 2023 09:00:14 +0000 https://detroithockeynow.com/?p=8244 The post Red Wings Legends Advocate for NHL to Make Neckguards Mandatory appeared first on Detroit Hockey Now.

Detroit Red Wings Hall of Fame defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom is convinced that all NHL players should be wearing neck guards.

“After everything that has happened, I think so,” Lidstrom told Swedish website Expressen.se.

The recent death of former Pittsburgh Penguins player Adam Johnson, who had his throat cut by a skate during a pro game in England, has brought the lack of neck protection in the NHL game to the forefront of discussion.

“I think neck protection is part of all the protection you have, so for me it goes without saying that you should have it if you play hockey,” former Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg said.

Neck guards have been mandatory in Sweden’s top league, the SHL, since 1996. Since Johnson’s death, both the EIHL in the UK and the CHL in North America mae the move to make them a required piece of equipment.

“I have never played in a neck protector, there was hardly any when I was playing,” Lidstrom said. “It was for goalkeepers, but not many had it. But after everything that has happened, I think it should be mandatory, that it should be introduced as it has been done here in Sweden.”

Ongoing Discussion With Red Wings Dressing Room

Making such a move to institute mandatory wearing of beck guards won’t be such an easy achievement in the NHL. It will require approval of the NHLPA. Players in the world’s top hockey league have proven to be resistent to such dictums in the past. For instance, helmets weren’t made mandatory until 1979. That was 13 years after Minnesota North Stars forward Bill Masterton died after hitting his head on the ice during a game.

Certainly, since the Johnson tragedy there’s been plenty of discussion about neck guards within the Detroit locker room. So far, though, defenseman Jake Walman is the only Red Wings player opting to don neck protection.

“Hockey players are very particular with their gear,” Walman said. “Like me, I don’t really like trying new things but obviously for this reason it’s different. Yeah, comfort but protection is first.”

Teammate Lucas Raymond admits that he’s also considering taking this step.

“There has been a lot of talk, in the team and around the league,” Raymond said. “You played a lot with neck protection when you were younger, then you’ve probably gotten used to not having it now. But I see that there are many in the league who have it now, so we’ll see.”

Nicklas Lidstrom was worthy of many accolades over his Hall of Fame career with the Detroit Red Wings, but no one ever suggested that his sense of humor was as world class as his hockey sense.

It turns out that the Perfect Human is capable of delivering the perfect punch line.

Speaking at a media confererence in Stockholm at the NHL Global Series alongside former Red Wings forward Daniel Alfredsson, the final question of the gab session was going in the direction of Alfredsson in Swedish.

Now a member of the Ottawa Senators front office, the team with which Alfredsson fashioned the majority of his Hall of Fame career, Ottawa players were recently noting that Alfredsson, 50, was looking as though he could still be playing.

That’s what the Swedish journalist was asking him about and Lidstrom sought to ensure that nothing was lost in translation.

“I can translate,” Lisdtrom told reporters, according to Swedish website Expressen.se. “Alfie was asked if he could still play, and he replied “I might put the stuff on tonight.”

Salming Award To Lidstrom

It was Lidstrom who given the task of dropping the puck for the ceremnial faceoff at Avicii Arena prior to the Red Wings vs Senators game on Thursday. He was also receiving recognition from the NHL Alumni as the inaugural recipient of the Borje Salming Courage Award. The award recognizes a European NHL Alumni member who has been a positive influence in their community and best embodies Salming’s lasting bravery, courage, and dedication both on and off the ice.

Salming, who died of ALS last summer, was Lidstrom’s childhood idol. The two Hall of Famers skated as a defense pairing for Sweden in the 1991 Canada Cup. just prior to Lidstrom joining the Red Wings. Salming played the final season of his NHL career with the Red Wings in 1989-90.

Red Wings Yzerman Praising Lidstrom’s Work

As captain of the Red Wings, Steve Yzerman won three Stanley Cups playing alongside Lidstrom. He’s witnessing the same level of commitment and natural ability since Detroit GM Yzerman last year was adding Lidstrom to his staff as vice president of hockey operations.

We in the organization are not only excited to have him but also how committed he is,” Yzerman told Swedish website Aftonbladet.se. “This applies to all aspects, regardless of whether he is in Sweden looking at our prospects or whether he is on site checking SHL or junior hockey.

“He’s been in Detroit a long time, he knows how our organization works and both players and managers value him highly. His view on things has been very valuable.”

With some very important people on hand to watch him in action, Detroit Red Wings 2023 first-round pick Axel Sandin Pellikka delivered what the expectations are for an elite talent.

He was playing the hero’s role.

The Swedish defenseman would net the game winner as Skelleftea was edging Leksand and fellow Red Wings prospect Anton Johnasson 2-1 in SHL action on Thursday.

With Red Wings vice president of hockey operations Nicklas Lidstrom and Detroit European Player Development director Niklas Kronwall on hand, the young defender was wowing the two legendary rearguards with his performance.

“Great team effort,” Sandin Pellikka told Sweden’s TV4. “A tight match, which could have gone either way.”

Tallying three goals in as many games, Sandin Pellikka is leading all SHL rearguards in goal scoring. Two of his three tallies have come while Skelleftea was enjoying a power play.

“He’s a great defender,” Johansson said of Sandin Pellikka. “He is a good skater, he is a good puck handler.”

Considered the most skilled offensive defenseman available in the 2023 NHL entry draft, the Red Wings were able to tab the skilled rearguard with the 17th overall selection.

Sandin Pellikka Joining Select Company

By netting for the third game in a row, Sandin Pellikka was joining select compnay. He is the fifth defender who is 18 years of age or younger to achieve that feat. The others are Mattias Öhlund (1995, four straight matches), Anders Eldebrink (1978), Tomas Jonsson (1978) and Roger HĂ€gglund (1979). All four of those defensemen would go on to play in the NHL.

It isn’t merely offense that Sandin Pellikka is delivering for Skelleftea, though. In his previous game, the teenage blueliner was leading all players on both teams in ice time, skating 23:13. He would score the only goal for Skelleftea in a 3-1 loss to Orebo.

The Red Wings brass isn’t surprised to see Sandin Pellikka playing a significant role in the SHL.

“He’ll have a good year in Skelleftea,” Detroit assitant director of player development Dan Cleary was predicting at the outset of the season. “Smart kid. Really composed. That translates to his on-ice game as well.

“When he’s under pressure, under siege, he’s got the ability to calm it down and make a play instead of rushing it. That’s his demeanor.

Zetterberg softening stance on future hockey mangement involvement

The post Zetterberg Jokes Red Wings Haven’t Room For Him appeared first on Detroit Hockey Now.

On second thought, perhaps former Detroit Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg could see himself having a future in the front office of the club.

Last spring, upon his induction into the IIHF Hall of Fame, Zetterberg was casting serious doubt upon any thought that he could one day be a full-time NHL executive.

“There is no other desire to work with hockey in the future,” Zetterberg was saying at the time.

Thursday, as he was receiving enshrinement into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, Z was humming a different tune.

“I could see myself doing it in the future,” Zetterberg said. “I’m not quite sure if I’m ready right now but I could see myself in the future getting involved.”

Currently, Zetterberg does fill an unofficial role as a consultant with the Red Wings. From his Swedish home in Angelholm, he’s been able to get an up-close view of Detroit prospects like William Wallinder and Marco Kasper as they were playing in the SHL with the local club Rogle. He’s been serving as a source and a sounding board. Zetterberg is often sharing his observations with former teammate and close friend Red Wings European development director Niklas Kronwall.

“The good thing with that, I’m still involved,” Zetterberg said. “I know what’s going on. “We’ve have a lot of Detroit prospects in Sweden in my hometown, or where I live now in Angelholm – Kasper was there, Wallinder was there.

“Everytime Nik comes into town, I have a chance to be involved. It’s something that interests me.”

Is There A Spot For Zetterberg With Red Wings?

Zetterberg knows that if he does come back to pro hockey, it will be in a front-office role. He possesses no desire to work behind an NHL bench as a coach.

He’s currently helping out on the ice with the youth hockey team of his eight-year-old son Love.

“I’m not really coaching my son, I’m moving pucks around and that’s probably the level of coaching I will get to,” Zetterberg said.

Oddly enough, the MSHOF induction ceremonies came exactly five years to the day of Zetterberg’s retirement from the NHL due to a degnerative back condition.

He does pose one curious question about the potential of working in the Detroit front office. Does the Red Wings management team have any room for him at the inn?

Besides Kronwall, the Red Wings front-office group includes such prominent alumni as GM Steve Yzerman, assistant GM and director of amateur scouting Kris Draper, vice president of hockey operations Nicklas Lidstrom, pro scout Kirk Maltby and assistant development director Dan Cleary. And that list doesn’t include another ex-NHLer, assistant GM Shawn Horcoff.

“Right now, I don’t think they have room for me,” Zetterberg joked. “There’s so many good guys up there – Kronner, Nick, Drapes, Cleary, Horc, Malts – everybody basically I played with. And Stevie in charge now.”

You’d be hard pressed to find anyone with more knowledge about qualifying for the NHL playoffs than Nicklas Lidstrom. He never missed the postseason in his career with the Detroit Red Wings.

He appeared in the playoffs for 20 consecutive seasons. That’s an NHL record he shares with Larry Robinson. Before his arrival in 1991-92, the Red Wings had missed the playoffs 13 times in 20 years. As far as the Red Wings are concerned, Lidstrom is Mr. Playoff.

That’s why it’s meaningful that he told expressen.se that he believes the Red Wings seven-season playoff drought will be over in 2023-24.

Anyone who wants to bet on Lidstrom’s optimism should check out these Ohio Betting Apps.

“We have strengthened the whole team and I think we should be a playoff team in the spring,” Nicklas Lidström predicted to Expressen writer Gunnar Nordstrom.

That’s an encouraging take from a player whose reputation is impeccable. His teammates used to call him “The Perfect Human.”

As a team vice president, Lidstrom is an adviser to GM Steve Yzerman, who made significant roster changes, including bringing in two-time 40-plus goal scorer Alex DeBrincat.

Lidstrom discussed the potential of Detroit’s Swedish players in his interview with Nordstrom, particularly Lucas Raymond who is in his third NHL season. Raymond’s offensive production fell by 13 points last season.

“He improved during the second half of last season, so I’m not worried,” Lidstrom said. “There can be a dip in the second year in the NHL when all opponents know how good you are and the courting becomes tougher. And everyone now knows how good Lucas is. But I am convinced that he will come back with a little desire for revenge.”

Lidstrom Bullish on Soderblom

Lidstrom is also optimistic about big forward Elmer Soderblom who split time between Detroit and Grand Rapids last season.

“Elmer was unlucky with injuries at the end of the season in Grand Rapids,” Lidstrom said. “He absolutely has the potential to break into the team this fall even if the competition is tough.”

Lidstrom also seems bullish on Swedish prospect William Wallinder who is playing in North America for the first time after showing his promise in the Swedish Hockey League.

“William has stepped up in Rögle and become more even in his game,” Lidstrom said. “He can be involved in all situations and the idea is that he will stay in North America next season. If he doesn’t get a place in the Red Wings before the start of the series, it will be Grand Rapids.”

Lidstrom embraces the company line when it comes to Simon Edvinsson: let’s wait to see where he is after his offseason shoulder surgery.

“We’ll see if he’s ready for the (season) to start in October,” Lidstrom said. “But we are aware that it may take longer. And don’t forget that we also have Albert Johansson , 22, who is fighting for a place in the defense.”
