Second Hall of Fame in as many months for former Detroit captain

Former Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg is being inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame.

The Hockey Hall of Fame didn’t call Henrik Zetterberg’s name on Wednesday, but the former Detroit Red Wings captain was yet again becoming a hall of famer.

While he didn’t hear for the big hall, the state where he made his NHL home is calling. Zetterberg was named this week as part of the class of 2023 that will be enshrined into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame.

Zetterberg would play all 1028 of his NHL games with Detroit, scoring 337 goals and accumulating 960 points. He won and Olympic gold medal and world championship in 2006, the Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe Trophy in 2007-08 and the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 2014-15.

Zetterberg, a member of the Triple Gold Club, was also recently inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame.

You’ve got to be a fairly hard-core Red Wings fan to recall forward Zach Torquato. Detroit selected him 178th overall in the 2007 NHL entry draft. Although he would play 12 AHL gaems for the Grand Rapids Griffins, the Red Wings never offered him a contract. After seven seasons in the AHL and ECHL, Torquato went to Europe, playing in Italy, Switzerland, Denmark and France. Recently, he was announcing his retirement following completion of his second season in the French league with Angers.
