Jonatan Berggren, Red Wings

Jonatan Berggren is back with the Detroit Red Wings.

He was recalled by the team on Tuesday after a month with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Berggren, the Np. 33 pick in the 2018 NHL draft, played in two games last mpnth woth the Red Wings before being sent down.

He has four goals and seven assist in 11 games with Grand Rapids so far this season. He had two goals and two assist last weekend for the Griffins against Manitoba.

The native of Sweden was in 67 games with the Red Wings last season. He ranked among the team leaders with 15 goals (5th), 28 points (9th), five power-play goals (T4th), nine power play points (7th) and a 15.3 shooting percentage (1st). He was named the team’;s rookie of the year.

An Up-And-Down Rookie Season

Berggren had an up-and-down season for Detroit. He went scoreless for more than a month at one point and suffering the inconsistency that rookies sometimes endure.

On the down side, Berggren was benched during the IIHF world championship by team Sweden. He also narrowly avoided being hit by a tram while working out with the team.

So it’s safe to say he’s been on a roller coaster in the past year.

He’s currently on the upswing, though. Berggren spent a week with the team last month as injury insurance. It c0uld be the same this time around. His time on the team will depend on the health of Dylan Larkin, who won’t be available Wednesday against the New York Rangers and possibly Thursday against Chicago.

His recall put the Red Wings at the maximum 23 players on their roster, and likely won’t be the last transaction of the day. The Wings will have to make a move if they officially sign Patrick Kane to a contract today, for example.

The Red Wings are off until tomorrow, when they take on the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. They’ll be looking to extend a three-game winning streak since their return from Sweden.
