If you are looking to solve the case of the Grand Rapids Griffins’ five-game winning streak, the evidence shows that the fingerprints of Detroit Red Wings prospects are all over it.

The Contributors

  • Jonatan Berggren (drafted 33rd in 2018) registered a goal and an assist Saturday night to help the Griffins down the Iowa Wild 4-1 for their fifth consecutive win.  The Swedish forward has two goals, three multiple games and seven points during the streak.
  • Carter Mazur (drafted 70th in 2021) also tallied his sixth goal in the past eight games in that win against Iowa. Mazur totals four goals, five points and 18 shots on goal in the five victories.
  • Marco Kasper (drafted eighth overall in 2022) assisted on Joel L’Esperance’s goal to give him six points in the five games. After a slow start, he now has 14 points in 31 games.
  • Amadeus Lombardi (drafted 113th in 2022) assisted on Berggren’s goal. He has three assists in the streak. Lombardi now has 12 points.

Tuomisto Rising

  • After an injury undermined the start of his first season in North American pro hockey, defenseman Antti Tuomisto  (drafted 35th overall) has established himself as a significant contributor on Grand Rapids’ defense. The 6-foot-5 Finland native has two goals and three points in the five games. If count the time he spent with the Toledo Walleye as part of his rehabilitation stint, Tuomisto has launched his North American pro career with seven goals and 10 points in his first 17 games.
  • Defenseman Albert Johansson (drafted 60th overall in 2019) picked up an assist to give him two goals and three points in the streak. He’s also +6. Johansson may not be a top pairing defenseman at the NHL level, but he’s going to play and be a dependable player. He’s +13 this season for the Griffins.
  • Prize prospect Simon Edvinsson (drafted sixth overall in 2021) is +4 during the streak and boasts three points.
  •  Goalie Sebastian Cossa (drafted 15th overall in 2021) is 2-0 during the Grand Rapids run. One of his wins was an impressive 29-save effort to best Jesper Wallstedt who was rated ahead of him in the 2021 draft year.

Last summer, Detroit GM Steve Yzerman made it point to say he wanted to make Grand Rapids a more competitive team. The Red Wings will continue to have top prospects playing for the Griffins. He wants to make sure their AHL experience includes playoff action.

With their recent run, the Griffins are 14-3-3-1, good enough for third place in the AHL’s Central Division.  One of Yzerman’s goals was to solidify the Griffins’ goaltending. The signing of veteran Michael Hutchinson, 33, has helped in that regard. He has given up only five goals in three wins during the streak.

The Grand Rapids Griffins are doing what their parent team hasn’t been able to do since early December. The Griffins are climbing in the standings.

That allowed the Griffins to move into a tie for third place in the American Hockey League’s Central Division.

“Getting momentum back for us after the Christmas break is huge for  us,” Mazur said. “It shows we are headed in the right direction, especially as a young team, to get those wins under our belt early, to keep it going.

First and foremost among the objectives in terms of developing the top Detroit Red Wings prospects is to get them as much ice time as possible. That being the case, the achievement of forward Jonatan Berggren over the past week was probably a bit on the excessive side.

Between Wednesday and Saturday, Berggren was playing four games in four days. He would contest those quartet of contests across four separate cities.

The journey began on Wednesday. Gaining a recall from the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins the day before, Berggren would skate 11:53 of ice time during a 3-2 loss to the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. He would collect his first NHL point of the season with the primary assist on a goal by Robby Fabbri.

Back in Detroit the next night, the young Swede saw 11:20 of ice time in a 5-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks at Little Caesars Arena. He was assessed a first-period holding penalty during which J.T. Compher would score shorthanded for Detroit and Lukas Reichel would count a power-play goal for Chicago.

Berggren Busy As A Bee

Returning to Grand Rapids the following day, Berggren suited up at Van Andel Arena as the Griffins were downing the Milwaukee Admirals. He was drawing an assist on a goal by Simon Edvinsson as the Griffins were 4-1 winners.

Taking the 270-mile bus ride to Milwaukee with the Griffins, Berggren would play again Saturday. This time it was in a 4-2 loss to the Admirals at Panther Arena. He was dishing out his ninth AHL assist of the season on a goal by Carter Mazur. In doing so, Berggren was extending his AHL point-scoring streak to five games (3-4-7).

“He’s a top leading scorer on that team,” Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said. “He is able to produce on a point a game clip.”

Both the rejuvenated Grand Rapids Griffins and top Detroit Red Wings defense prospect Simon Edvinsson were continuing to roll on Friday at Van Andel Arena.

Getting a pair of goals from Edvinsson, Grands Rapids were 4-1 winners over the Milwaukee Admirals. Forward Jonatan Berggren, just returning to the Griffins earlier Friday from a stint with the Red Wings, was doling out an assist on Edvinsson’s second goal. Detroit draftees Albert Johansson and Elmer Soderblom each were contributing a pair of assists to the Griffins cause.

Edvinsson now has points in five successive games for Grand Rapids, showing 2-6-8 numbers over that span. In three of those five games, the Swedish defenseman has been counting multi-point performances.

Berggren, meanwhile, was extending his AHL points-scoring streak to four games (3-3-6). He’s accumulated 12 points (4-8-12) over 12 games with Grand Rapids.

Forward Taro Hirose drew an assist to extend his point-scoring streak to a season-high six games (3-6-9). However, the five-game streak of forward Austin Czarnik (3-3-6) came to a halt.

In goal, Sebastian Cossa, like Edvinsson a 2021 Detroit first-round draft pick, was parrying 35 of 36 shots to improve to 3-3-2 on the season.

Grand Rapids was posting its third win in the past four games. The Griffins were 4-7-2 on the season prior to this recent turnaround.

Griffins Send Tuomisto To Toledo

Just back from injury, the Griffins were assigning defenseman Antti Tuomisto to the ECHL Toledo Walleye.

Tuomisto has suited up for two games with the Griffins, making his North America pro debut on Oct. 13 against the Colorado Eagles. The Pori, Finland, native has not seen game action since Oct. 21, as he has been recovering from an upper-body injury.

The 2023-24 seas0n is nearly two months along, and beginning this week we’ll be keeping tabs on Red Wings prospects in the minors, or juniors, or in college in what we’re calling the Prospect Watch.

It’s not a ranking or assessment of talent, (For now, we’ll leave that to the guys Chris Ilitch is paying to do that) but it will be a snapshot of how prospects fared in the previous week. So the fact that players move up and down on this list is purely our perception, not where we think they rank in the organization.

Sandin Pellikka Off to Fast Start

Axel Sandin Pellikka is off to a blazing start in Sweden, recording his seventh goal in 18 games this season. That’s good for a forward. It’s amazing f0r a defenseman. Sandin Pellikka. the 17th overall pick last summer,  is off to the best start for a teenage defenseman in Sweden in 40 years. Ulf Samuelsson, who was very briefly a Red Wing at the end of his NHL career, had nine goals in 33 games in 1982-83.

Trey Augustine had a big weekend for the red-hot Michigan State hockey team. He was in net for both games as the Spartans (10-3-1) swept top-ranked Wisconsin. Augustine has a GAA of 2.99, a save percentage of . 913 and is 9-3-1 with a shutout while playing in 13 of MSU’s 14 games this season.

Simon Edvinsson has had a solid start even as the Grand Rapids Griffins stumble. The Griffins were swept by the Texas Stars last weekend. Edvinsson had a pair of assists in a 7-4 loss on Saturday. He has three goals in 13 games this season, well ahead of last year’s pace.

Mazur Hot After Return From Injury

Carter Mazur, who missed training camp with an injury suffered in Traverse City two months ago, has five points in seven games so far this season. He has two goals and three assists. That’s the same as Cross Hanas and Amadeus Lombardi, who have played in 13 and 12 games, respectively.

Red Savage is off to a good start at Michigan State after transferring from Miami (Ohio). He has four goals and 14 points in as many games for the Spartans.

Nate Danielson and Emmitt Finnie represented the Western Hockey League at each end of last summer’s draft. Danielson, the No. 9 overall selection, was impressive in training camp before beginning the season with Brandon. He has five goals and 13 points. Finnie, taken in the seventh round at No. 201, has four goals and 13 points for Kamloops.

Red Wings 2023 draftee Jack Phelan (137th overall) was among the 22 players named to the 2023 U.S. Junior Select Team that will compete at the 2023 World Junior A Challenge from December 10-17 in Truro, Nova Scotia. The 19-year-old defenseman is showing 1-4-5 totals with the USHL’s Sioux Falls Stampede.

It was a big bounce back win for the Grand Rapids Griffins, and several future Detroit Red Wings hopefuls were playing significantly roles in the outcome.

A 5-2 victory over the Chicago Wolves on Wednesday came after what was arguably rock bottom for the Griffins. In back-to-back home games on the weekend against the Toronto Marlies, they were beaten 7-3 and 5-0.

Detroit draft picks were combining for eight points and also earning the win.

Sebastian Cossa, victimized in the 7-3 setback, rebounded to stop 26 of 28 shots and earn the win, ending a personal four-game (0-2-2) skid. Winger Carter Mazur, a 2021 draftee, was netting his first two goals of the AHL season.

“You’ve just gotta hit the reset button,” Cossa, selected 15th overall in 2021, told the Griffins website. ”

Griffins Berggren Likes Playing With Kasper

Jonatan Berggren , a 2018 second-round choice, was also scoring his first of the season, while 2022 first-round pick Marco Kasper was dishing out a pair of helpers.

Prior to Wednesday’s victory, Kasper’s offensive account was showing one goal through 10 games.

“He’s a skilled player, so it makes it easier,” Berggren told the Griffins website of playing with Kasper. Berggren (1-1-2) also enjoyed a two-point game.

Defenseman Simon Edvinsson, the sixth overall selection in 2021, collected an assist on one of Mazur’s goal. The unit of Berggren, Kasper and 2019 draftee Elmer Soderblom was combining for two goals and four points.

“They talk a lot,” Grand Rapids coach Dan Watson said. “They’re communicating when they get off the ice. They’re good friends off the ice, too, so it’s just a matter of finding some chemistry. Saturday, I saw some positive things but they weren’t connecting. (Wednesday) they were connecting. Working together as a line and complementing each other.”

Berggren spent the second half of last season in the NHL with the Red Wings and has already recalled to play one game this season. He’s certain that his time as a regular in Detroit will be ultimately earned.

“I’m confident in my game,” Berggren said. “I know how good I am.”
