The Detroit Red Wings are seeing the results they hoped they would see out of new Grand Rapids Griffins coach Dan Watson.

The Griffins (21-15-5-3) lost a 4-3 overtime decision to the Cleveland Monsters Friday, but the Griffins extended their points streak to 11 consecutive games. They haven’t lost in regulation in more than a month. This is the second-longest points streak in the AHL this season.

The Red Wings hired Watson as part of their offseason effort to restore the Griffins’ competitiveness. The best development environment for a prospect is to play for a playoff qualifier in the American Hockey League. Their gauntlet-like postseason scenario is similar to the NHL’s. The Griffins had missed the playoffs for two consecutive seasons. This season, they are battling the Texas Stars for second place in the Central Division.

The Griffins trailed Cleveland 3-1 Friday, but forced overtime with goals by Jonatan Berggren and Joel L’Esperance. Berggren’s goal was his 16th, 18th if you count the two goals he has scored for Detroit this season. Berggren has 20 points — including nine goals — in his past 16 games. Elmer Soderblom also scored his sixth goal for the Griffins.

Goalie prospect Sebastian Cossa is 4-0-2 during this streak.

  • Paywall story: Tim Robinson writes that Wisconsin-bound Jack Phelan was making progress as a Detroit prospect until an injury removed him the lineup.

Both the rejuvenated Grand Rapids Griffins and top Detroit Red Wings defense prospect Simon Edvinsson were continuing to roll on Friday at Van Andel Arena.

Getting a pair of goals from Edvinsson, Grands Rapids were 4-1 winners over the Milwaukee Admirals. Forward Jonatan Berggren, just returning to the Griffins earlier Friday from a stint with the Red Wings, was doling out an assist on Edvinsson’s second goal. Detroit draftees Albert Johansson and Elmer Soderblom each were contributing a pair of assists to the Griffins cause.

Edvinsson now has points in five successive games for Grand Rapids, showing 2-6-8 numbers over that span. In three of those five games, the Swedish defenseman has been counting multi-point performances.

Berggren, meanwhile, was extending his AHL points-scoring streak to four games (3-3-6). He’s accumulated 12 points (4-8-12) over 12 games with Grand Rapids.

Forward Taro Hirose drew an assist to extend his point-scoring streak to a season-high six games (3-6-9). However, the five-game streak of forward Austin Czarnik (3-3-6) came to a halt.

In goal, Sebastian Cossa, like Edvinsson a 2021 Detroit first-round draft pick, was parrying 35 of 36 shots to improve to 3-3-2 on the season.

Grand Rapids was posting its third win in the past four games. The Griffins were 4-7-2 on the season prior to this recent turnaround.

Griffins Send Tuomisto To Toledo

Just back from injury, the Griffins were assigning defenseman Antti Tuomisto to the ECHL Toledo Walleye.

Tuomisto has suited up for two games with the Griffins, making his North America pro debut on Oct. 13 against the Colorado Eagles. The Pori, Finland, native has not seen game action since Oct. 21, as he has been recovering from an upper-body injury.

While the Detroit Red Wings were playing in Sweden last week as part of the NHL Global Series, they were arriving to Stockholm with more Swedes in the front office than on the ice.

Forward Lucas Raymond was the only Swedish player in the Detroit lineup.

However, to quote Reg Dunlop, erstwhile player/coach of the Charlestown Chiefs, that situation is about to change.

While in Sweden, Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman was talking excitedly about the number of top Swedish prospects currently in the club’s development pipeline.

“We have some young guys who are close to playing in the NHL,” Yzerman told Swedish website Aftonbladet.se. “This year they get a bigger role in Grand Rapids (AHL) to develop a little and play more special teams and have a bigger role.

“They are very young and we expect them to be able to force their way into the team within a year or two.”

At the top of that list certainly is defenseman Simon Edvinsson. The sixth player chosen in the 2021 NHL entry draft is in his second AHL season with the Griffins. He’s fourth on the team in scoring with 3-4-7 totals through 13 games.

“Positive reports from him down there, where he’s starting to get a more complete game,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “There’s less of those egregious mistakes. He’s finding his game, he’s growing the correct way.”

Red Wings Pick Sandin Pellikka Lighting Up SHL

Still in Sweden playing for Skelleftea of the SHL, defenseman Axel Sandin Pellikka, the 17th overall pick of the 2023 draft, already shows seven goals as his tally this season.

“He’s a slightly different player than what we have in our organization,” Yzerman said. “He’s an offensive defenseman who’s good at moving the puck and we don’t really have that type of defenseman.

“It’s only a matter of time before he has a positive impact on the team”

Forwards Jonatan Berggren and Elmer Soderblom and defensemen Albert Johansson and William Wallinder are other Swedish prospects in Grand Rapids.

“Overall, they are good young men who all have a chance to become NHL players,” the Detroit GM said.

Yzerman finds the potential of Johansson to be curiously intriguing. The steady defender is a team-leading plus-four.

“He has started very well this year,” Yzerman said of Johansson. “Now he is injured but he is close to coming back. Based on his play, we want him to play in the NHL at some point to see where he fits in next year.

“He can be a good NHL player, he just has to be healthy and play.”

Petruzzelli gets better of Cossa, Griffins

It was a Detroit Red Wings goalie prospect of the past facing the Red Wings goalie prospect of the future on Friday as the Toronto Marlies played the Grand Rapids Griffins. And the past got the better of the future.

Keith Petruzzelli stopped 21 of 24 shots as the Marlins whipped the Griffins 7-3 in their AHL game at Van Andel Arena. Taking the loss for the Griffins was 2021 Detroit first-round draft pick Sebastian Cossa. Cossa was beaten six times on 28 shots.

Detroit’s 88th overall selection in the 2017 NHL entry draft, Petruzzelli and the Red Wings were never able to come to an agreement on an entry-level contract. After finishing his college career at Quinnipiac, he would end up signing an AHL deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Like Cossa, Petruzzelli split his rookie pro season of 2022-23 between the ECHL and AHL.

With his win Friday, Petruzzelli was improving to 3-1-1 on the season. However, it is noteworthy that both his goals-against average (3.42) and save percentage (.877) are far from spectacular.

Cossa dropped to 1-2-2 for the 2023-24 AHL campaign. He’s showing an .899 save percentage and 3.22 GAA.

Red Wings Prospect Lombardi Gets On Board

There were some bright spots on what was an overall disappointing night for the Griffins. Red Wings prospect Amadeus Lombardi was tallying his first goal as a professional during the third period of the game. Lombardi cleaned up a rebound and slid the puck past Petruzzelli to put Grand Rapids within striking distance, narrowing Toronto’s lead to 5-3.

Both Elmer Soderblom (1-2–3) and Lombardi (1-2–3) extended their point streaks to three games. Veteran pro Zach Aston-Reese scored his first of the season for Grand Rapids. Dominic Shine drew an assist on that goal. He was moving into sole possession of third place on the Griffins’ all-time games played list with 366.

Griffins rookie forward Carter Mazur might be finding himself in some hot water with AHL disciplinarians for his part on a late-game line brawl. Just back in action from a lower-body injury he was suffering in the Red Wings rookie camp, Mazur was issued a misconduct for abuse of officials at 19:10 of the third period.

Michael Hutchinson isn’t likely to ever play a regular-season game for the Detroit Red Wings. Currently, he’s on a pro tryout agreement with Detroit’s top farm club, the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins.

Yet, the fact of the matter is that currently, Hutchinson is playing a vital role in shaping the future of the Red Wings. With the Griffins, the journeyman veteran netminder is serving as mentor to Sebastian Cossa. A first-round pick of the Red Wings in the 2021 NHL entry draft, Cossa is earmarked as Detroit’s goalie of the future.

At the moment, that future is in Hutchinson’s hands. And it’s an opportunity that he relishes.

“My role is just to be there for him if he has any questions or anything he needs,” Hutchinson told DHN. “It’s fun working with someone that young and talented.”

A tradition will continue with two Detroit Red Wings prospects gaining inclusion in the Swedish junior national team roster for the upcoming five-nations tourney set to be held in the Czech Republic. This event is the final tune up for the IIHF World Junior Championship, so barring injuries, this will likely be Sweden’s team to compete in that event.

Defenseman Axel Sandin Pellikka of Skelleftea, chosen 17th overall by Detroit in the 2023 NHL entry draft, figures to be among Sweden’s top performers. As well, defenseman Anton Johansson of Leksands, selected 105th overall in 2022, is also gaining inclusion in the squad.

A third Red Wings prospect, forward Noah Dower Nilsson, likely would’ve also been considered. However, offseason shoulder suregery still has him on the shelf. Dower Nilsson was Detroit’s 73rd overall choice in the 2023 draft.

Sandin Pellikka Dominating SHL

In his first full season in the SHL, Sandin Pellikka, 18, is leading all defenseman in Sweden’s top league with five goals. It’s winning him praise from within his own club and from the Red Wings organization.

Both vice-president of hockey operations Nicklas Lidstrom and European player development director Niklas Kronwall are regular visitors to Sandin Pellikka’s game.

“Very mobile and calm with the puck,” Lidstrom told Swedish website Expressen.se. “He finds many good solutions and has a good one-timer he gets to show off, too.”

The person delivering the majority of the hands-on mentoring is Kronwall.

“I mostly communicate with Kronwall,” Sandin Pellikka said. “He gives me tips and feedback. So far I haven’t gotten any scoldings from him. I guess I haven’t made any bigger mistakes yet.”

Red Wings Swedish World Junior History

Over the past four world junior tourneys, 10 Red Wings draft picks were suiting up for Sweden. This list is including current Detroit forward Jonatan Berggren (2020) and top prospects such as defensemen Simon Edvinsson (2022), William Wallinder (2022), Albert Johansson (2021) and forward Elmer Soderblom (2021), all currently honing their games with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins.

Though at the time there were no Red Wings picks in last year’s squad, Sandin Pellikka did play for Sweden.

James Reimer passed the first test of the Detroit Red Wings’ new goaltending set-up by putting up a 23-save shutout to beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-0 on the road Monday night.  Carrying three goalies makes practices challenging. It’s difficult to provide three goalies enough work to stay sharp.

But that will seem like a minor inconvenience if the Red Wings turn this three-goalie set-up into better goaltending than they had last season.

The key factors in making this work is the fact that Reimer, 35, is an experienced goalie (439 career starts) who has rarely been a No. 1 goalie. He knows how to be a backup and understands how to work in tandem with other goalies. Likewise, Alex Lyon is a 30-year-old netminder who has battled to remain relevant for his entire career.  These are athletes who probably can make this work.

Reimer looked quite sharp in his debut, particularly in the first period when the Red Wings needed him most.

We don’t know where Detroit Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde does his impulse shopping, but we do know that he likes what 7-11 has to offer to his team. On Tuesday, the Red Wings were making the decision to send veteran forward Zach Aston-Reese to the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins. The move is leaving the club with just 22 players on the NHL roster, 12 of them forwards.

So what happens if a forward gets hurt? Well, that’s when Lalonde might go to 7-11 – as in seven defensemen and 11 forwards.

“I’m still not opposed to 7-11 on Thursday (in the season opener at New Jersey) also,” Lalonde said. “It’s what we are right now post-camp.”
