Derek Lalonde, Red Wings coach

Detroit Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde jokes that at the moment he dislikes the NHL’s regular-season overtime format.

“We’re 1-4 in overtime and 1-2 in the shootout — that’s a lot of points we’ve left out there,” Lalonde said.

The Philadelphia Flyers (seven OT losses) are the only other team to lose more games in extra time than the Red Wings this season. But the Toronto Maple Leafs and Carolina Hurricanes, both quality teams, have matched Detroit’s showing of six losses beyond regulation.

“Last year I think we were pretty good in overtime,” Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin said. “This year, we’re trying some different things and systems in overtime.”
