Detroit Red Wings draft pick Theodor Niederbach’s Swedish club is appealing a four-game suspension he’s been given by the SHL. In weekend action while playing for MoDo Hockey, game officials were assessing Niederbac a match penalty for an illegal hit to the head.

The Swedish forward drove his left forearm into the head of Timra’s Axel Rindell during an open-ice hit during the second period of the game. His immediate expulsion from the game was resulting from the call on the play.

The disciplinary committee of the SHL would follow up by handing Niederbach a four-game suspension. Niederbach, 21, was also given a fine of 6,785 Swedish Krona, the equivalent of about $660.

In their ruling, the SHL noted that Niederbach’s only point of contact with Rindell was to the head, presenting a higher likelihood of serious injury. The ruling was also taking note that Rindell had lost possession of the puck. Thus, entire avoidance of the hit was an option available to Niederbach..

The suspension was partially the result of Niederbach being a repeat offender. He was given a match penalty last season for boarding.

Instantly, MoDo officials were making the announcement that they would be appealing the suspension to Sweden’s National Sports Board.

“We think the outcome is far too harsh considering that their players take no responsibility at all in this case,” MoDo sports director Henrik Gradin wrote in a text message to Swedish website Expressen. “I’m afraid of where Swedish ice hockey is going,”

Red Wings Must Make Decision On Niederbach

Detroit’s 51st overall selection in the 2020 NHL entry draft, Niederbach remains without an NHL contract. Detroit has until June 1 to decide whether to sign him or the Red Wings will lose his NHL rights.

If the National Sports Board makes the decision to uphold his suspension, Niederbach will be missing four of MoDo’s eight remaining SHL regular-season games. MoDo is currently 10th in the 14-team SHL. In his third SHL season, Niederbach owns a share of 12th in team scoring with 5-5-10 totals. He’s second on the team in penalty minutes (31) and owns the club’s third-worst plus-minus (-13).

The chances of Niederbach getting a reduction in his suspension would appear remote. Another former Red Wings prospect, Albin Grewe of Djurgardens, took a similar route. He sought to have his five-game SHL ban overturned by the National Sports Board earlier this month. His bid was denied.

Detroit’s 66th pick in the 2019 NHL entry draft, the team made the decision not to sign Grewe to an NHL pact last year.

When the Detroit Red Wings drafted Albin Grewe in the third round in 2019, he drew comparisons to Brad Marchand. As it turned out, Grewe does Marcnn’t have Marchand’s offensive ability, but has shown Marchand’s knack for earning.

In 2022, Marchand became the most suspended NHL player when he picked up his eighth suspension. Grewe, now with Djurgardens IF earned a different distinction this season in the Allsvenskan, the second division of Swedish hockey, when he was suspended for the fourth time. The latest five-game suspension resulted from what the website Expressen called a “tackle” against Vasteras player Isac Skedung.

This suspension created more headlines because both Grewe and his team protested the suspension as unreasonable.

Albin Grewe earns third match penalty in five weeks

The Detroit Red Wings made the decision to walk away from 2019 draft pick Albin Grewe rather than offer the Swedish left-winger a contract. In hindsight, it’s appearing as though that decision is saving them a world of headaches.

Tuesday, playing for Djurgardens IF in Hockey Allsvenskan, the Swedish second division, Grewe was picking up his third match penalty of the season. This time out, he was sent to the showers for a head shot on AIK’s Calle Åsell.

In the aftermath, one of the more puzzling developments came when Swedish TV broadcaster Fredrik Soderstrom was opting to compare Grewe’s antics to that of Ioan Ursut, among Sweden’s most notorious criminals.

“It’s downright stupid to go in like that,” Swedish website Aftonbladet.se reported Soderstrom saying during the broadcast of the game. “A player like Albin Grewe, who has a criminal record that makes Ursut and the boys appear sympathetic, should stay away from that.”

Ursut was a bank robber and convicted murderer known for his daring escapes from prison. Once while on the lam, he shot a Swedish police officer.

As for Grewe, this is his third match penalty in five weeks.

Grewe’s Coach At A Loss

Djurgarden coach Michael Holmquist admitted that it’s an ongoing battle to keep Grewe from crossing over that line from playing hard and physical to playing dirty.

“Albin is hot and I try to work with him,” Holmquist told Aftonbladet. “I have done that for many years. I’ve had him as a junior too.

“It is a balance in when it is mode and not, to find the right modes. I have to keep working on it, of course. He needs to find the balance to have a nice and long hockey career.”

Red Wings Saw Grewe As Marchand Type

Part of the first draft class under current GM Steve Yzerman, the Red Wings were hoping Grewe could evolve into a Brad Marchand type. After selecting him 66th overall, they were thinking he’d develop into a player who played with an edge, but didn’t cross the line into seriously foul play.

Grewe even skated an 11-game stint with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins in 2020-21, collecting two assists and six penalty minutes. But after spending the past two seasons in Hockey Allsvenskan, the Wings were opting not to sign Grewe and relinquished their rights to him.

Albin Grewe recognizes that his opportunity to grow into a role with the Detroit Red Wings is now or never. The sands of time are running out on his NHL dream.

Not all that long ago, there was appearing to be a future for Grewe as a piece of Detroit’s puzzle. The fiesty 5-foot-11, 187-pound left-winger, selected 66th overall in the 2019 NHL entry draft, posted back-to-back 100 penalty minutes seasons with Djurgardens of the SHL J20 league.

He even scrapped with 6-foot-8 Elmer Soderblom during a scrimmage at the Red Wings’ 2019 development camp.

A plan for Grewe to play for the OHL’s Saginaw Spirit fizzled out when the COVID-19 pandemic ended up scuttling the 2020-21 OHL season.

“It was tough,” Grewe told HockeyNews.se. “I would have liked to go over and play in the OHL. I think it would have been good for me to play over there high up in the lineup and get a lot of confidence, which was the plan.”

Toward the end of the 2020-21 campaign, Grewe finally came to North America. He ended up playing 11 games for the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins, collecting two assists and six penalty minutes.

Finnish Placing Of Grewe Finished Early

Last season, the thought was for Grewe to spend the season with Ilves Tampere in the SM-liiga, Finland’s top tier. It was a similar plan to the method in which both Moritz Seider and Joe Veleno continued their development by playing in Sweden’s SHL.

In Grewe’s case, though, things went off the rails almost from his day of arrivial in Finland. He was dropped by Ilves just four games into the season.

“It wasn’t that I wanted to go home, it was more that it didn’t click,” Grewe told HockeyNews.se. “It is difficult. Sometimes you come to a team where it doesn’t quite work, and I felt that it didn’t work for me there. I was not trusted, in my opinion.

“I think it was weird that they brought me in in the first place to be honest. It was like they didn’t even want me there, so then I felt it was just as well to leave.

“I don’t know what it was, but they didn’t want to play me and why should I just stand over there and watch the matches?”

Mora Comes Calling

Next stop for Grewe was back home in Sweden with Mora IK of HockeyAllsvenskan, the country’s second tier. Even here, though, he ran into issues. After seven games, Grewe went on the shelf with an injury.

“Of course it was very tough and it felt like crap here and there with the injury,” Grewe explained. “Well, what to do now then? I came here to play hockey and I’m not doing that now.

“But I think I came back pretty good after that. It felt really good, so I will take that with me into this season.”

Finishing with 4-13-17 totals in 32 games, and another five assists in eight playoff games, Grewe will be starting the 2022-23 campaign with Mora.

“I am with it from the start, which feels good,” Grewe said. “It is a security to know that you are included here.”

Is Grewe included in the future plans of the Red Wings? At this juncture, that answer would appear to be no. However, he’s got one more season to utilize in order to be carving out a place with the Detroit organization.

We’ll be looking at the strengths and weaknesses of their game, as well as what the future holds for them as they advance through the Detroit organization. Today, we feature winger Albin Grewe

Albin Grewe

Position: Left Wing

How Acquired: Selected 66th overall, 2019 NHL entry draft

2021-22 Stats: (GP-G-A-P) 32-4-13-17

Contract Status: Unsigned

Anticipated 2022-23 Team: Mora IK

Prospect Synopsis

From the onset of when he was drafted, Grewe appeared to be a future fan favorite. Patterning his game after Brad Marchand and naming him as his favorite player, Red Wings fans watched closely to see what Grewe would be.

What it’s been is a gradual decline from those expectations. Though he played 11 games with Grand Rapids during the 2020-21 season, Grewe found himself in Finland only to have a “mutual separation” from the team. The gritty forward then landed with Mora IK, housed in Hockey Allsvenskan, which is the second division of the SHL.

Estimated Time of Arrival in Detroit

The clock seems to be ticking on that arrival, if it’s not completely over. Grewe has bounced around from the Swedish Hockey League, to the Griffins and then between Ilves Tampere and Mora IK last season. The numbers with the latter were modest, 17 points (4-13) in 32 games.

It’s a bit of a downer for fans and the Grewe as there was a lot of buzz surrounding him after he was drafted. Grewe even picked a fight with Elmer Soderblom back in the 2019 Development Camp. Here was a guy with snarl, going toe-to-toe with Detroit’s 6’8 prospect.

Three years later, the 2019 third round pick (Grewe) is off the radar while the 2019 sixth round pick (Soderblom) is likely pushing for a roster spot during training camp.

Is Grewe no longer a possibility in Detroit? It surely seems that way. Stranger things have happened, of course, but after making the Griffins on a tryout during the 2021 season, he couldn’t stick. Now he’s playing in the second tier of Sweden’s hockey league.

Never say never, but it surely seems that Grewe’s time within the organization is nearly over.

Albin Grewe’s nickname is T-Rex and as of today, hockey’s T-Rex is extinct in Finland.

European clubs don’t fool around when a player isn’t delivering the goods, as Grewe found out. The Detroit Red Wings prospect has been released by Finnish club Ilves Tampere.

“We would like to thank Albin for the work done [for] Ilves and wish him luck in the new challenges,” Ilves’ Sports Director Timo Koskela said on the club’s web page. The club also stated that the release was completed with the mutual consent of both player and team. Ilves signed Grewe to a one-year contract with an option year last spring.

Able to play either wing, Grewe saw duty in just four games for Ilves and didn’t collect a point. The only stat he registered was a trip to the penalty box to serve a minor infraction.

Selected 66th overall in the 2019 NHL entry draft, Steve Yzerman’s first as GM of the Red Wings, the same draft that’s brought defenseman Moritz Seider to the team.

Grewe hasn’t signed a contract with the Wings. He spent most of last season with Djurgardens of the Swedish league. The campaign saw Grewe posting 3-3-6 totals and 29 penalty minutes in 39 games.

Albin Grewe Had Pro Tryout In Grand Rapids Last Season

At the end of the Swedish season, Grewe signed a pro tryout contract with the Grand Rapids Griffins, Detroit’s AHL farm club. He played 11 games for the Griffins, collecting two assists and sitting out six penalty minutes.

An agitator on the ice, Grewe has admitted in the past that he models his game after Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand. He lists Marchand as his favorite player.

“I like to go under my opponents’ skin,” Grewe said. “I like to hit my opponents. Stuff like that.

“I’ve always played as I do, and then I also watched Brad Marchand and if I can play like he does . . .”

Where will Grewe play next is the question that must be answered now. If the Wings saw a place for him in GR, he’d be in camp with the club. Does he return to his homeland and play in Sweden?

It would appear that the T-Rex has much to chew on regarding his hockey future.
