Anticipated 2022-23 Team: Mora IK

Prospect Synopsis

From the onset of when he was drafted, Grewe appeared to be a future fan favorite. Patterning his game after Brad Marchand and naming him as his favorite player, Red Wings fans watched closely to see what Grewe would be.

What it’s been is a gradual decline from those expectations. Though he played 11 games with Grand Rapids during the 2020-21 season, Grewe found himself in Finland only to have a “mutual separation” from the team. The gritty forward then landed with Mora IK, housed in Hockey Allsvenskan, which is the second division of the SHL.

Estimated Time of Arrival in Detroit

The clock seems to be ticking on that arrival, if it’s not completely over. Grewe has bounced around from the Swedish Hockey League, to the Griffins and then between Ilves Tampere and Mora IK last season. The numbers with the latter were modest, 17 points (4-13) in 32 games.

It’s a bit of a downer for fans and the Grewe as there was a lot of buzz surrounding him after he was drafted. Grewe even picked a fight with Elmer Soderblom back in the 2019 Development Camp. Here was a guy with snarl, going toe-to-toe with Detroit’s 6’8 prospect.

Three years later, the 2019 third round pick (Grewe) is off the radar while the 2019 sixth round pick (Soderblom) is likely pushing for a roster spot during training camp.

Is Grewe no longer a possibility in Detroit? It surely seems that way. Stranger things have happened, of course, but after making the Griffins on a tryout during the 2021 season, he couldn’t stick. Now he’s playing in the second tier of Sweden’s hockey league.
