The Detroit Red Wings are locked into a competitive wild card race in the Eastern Conference and don’t want to see a competitor land impact defenseman Noah Hanifin before Friday’s trade deadline.

Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman reported that may happen because Hanifin, who has a modified no-trade clause, has told the Calgary Flames he would like to end up with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Lightning and Red Wings currently hold the two Eastern wild card spots with four teams chasing them. They both have 72 points, although Detroit has two games in hand. Because of Mikhail Sergachev’s injury, the Lightning desperately need another proven defenseman.

The Flames could also have an impact on the Eastern race if they trade goalie Jacob Markstrom to the New Jersey Devils. TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reported that the Devils are now willing to take Markstrom’s full salary in the deal. That had been a sticking point in previous negotiations.

New Jersey Hockey Now’s story says acquiring Markstrom is general manager Tom Fitzgerald’s No. 1 priority.  The Devils are eight points behind Detroit.

The Red Wings are off today and then have two days of practice before starting a four-game road trip with a game Wednesday against the Colorado Avalanche. The Avs lost 5-1 Saturday night to the Nashville Predators. But they are 4-2-1 in their last seven. The Detroit road trip also includes games against Arizona, Vegas and Buffalo.

Montreal: MHN looks at whether it makes any sense for the Montreal Canadiens to move Mike Matheson.

Nashville: Friedman is also reporting the Nashville Predators are close to finalizing a contract extension with Tommy Novak. That’s going to be a disappointment for several teams because he was a popular trade target. The Predators have won seven in a row.

Pittsburgh: Dan Kingerski wrote that the Pittsburgh Penguins‘ dressing room was eerily silent after they blew a 3-1 third period lead in losing to the Calgary Flames. Reality is settling in for the Penguins.

San Jose: How do the San Jose Sharks match up with Western Conference teams as trading partners? Sheng Peng has the answer.

Just how important has team chemistry been to the Detroit Red Wings recent success?

That’s a question that Detroit general manager Steve Yzerman has to wrestle with as he plans his actions for the March 8 NHL trade deadline. History tells us Yzerman wants to make a move. He has shown himself to be an aggressive, decisive manager, someone who isn’t timid about changing personnel.

But this year is different because this team seems to have a bond that has helped them win games with late rallies and push for a playoff spot that was well out of their reach a year ago.

The Boston Bruins, looking for defensive help, are at the front of the line when it comes to interest in Calgary Flames defenseman Noah Hanifin. He is a Boston native and played at Boston College.

TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reported the Flames and Hanifin were close on a deal that would pay him an average of $7.5 million over eight years. But Hanifin decided to halt contract talks after the Flames pulled their offer. It’s still possible the Flames could sign Hanifin for the eight years and trade him.

Bruins general manager Don Sweeney has been dissatisfied with the team’s defensive play of late.

The Flames are open for business. They have already moved defenseman Nikita Zadorov, and they also could move forward Elias Lindholm and defenseman Chris Tanev. Each of those players can be a UFA this summer.

With most of the NHL teams putting the final touches on their preseason rosters, it seems curious that the Calgary Flames have yet to make a major trade. Mikael Backlund, Elias Lindholm, Chris Tanev and Noah Hanifin will be unrestricted free agents next summer.

If the Flames aren’t going to get these players re-signed, do they want to risk letting them walk away next summer without compensation?

The Boston Bruins are looking for a center and both Lindholm and Backlund could help the Bruins. Sportsnet’s Pat Steinberg has speculated that the Detroit Red Wings could be interested in a possible trade with Calgary.  It does seem clear that Yzerman is pushing to get into the playoffs.

What you hear around the league is that salary cap issues have been the biggest impediment to Calgary making a trade. The Flames reportedly are trying to make some hockey trades. They will take salaries back. But the offers haven’t been good enough to satisfy general manager Craig Conroy.
