Detroit Red Wings draft pick Red Savage contributed a goal and an assist to help USA down Latvia, 5-2, Monday on the opening day of the World Junior Championships in Moncton, New Brunswick and Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Savage is the only Red Wings’ prospect competing at the WJC. The Red Wings had eight prospects at last year’s tournament.
Detroit’s fourth-round pick in 2021 is USA’s third line center and alternate captain for the tournament. He plays college hockey for Miami and he’s the son of former NHL player Brian Savage. The younger Savage has 10 points in 16 games for Miami.
