Detroit Red Wings prospect Noah Dower Nilsson began the 2023-24 hockey season on the shelf, recovering from shoulder surgery. Then in late November, he was once again suiting up with Frolunda of the SHL. However, his usage for the most part was sparingly.

It looked like he’d be getting the opportunity to play more . . . and to once again play alongside his brother, fellow Detroit draftee Liam Dower Nilsson. Frolunda was loaning Dower Nilsson to Bjorkloven.

The loan was to cover the remainder of the season. Bjorkloven plays in Hockey Allsvenskan, Sweden’s second division. He is subject to recall by Frolunda is Dower Nilsson is needed again in the SHL this season. He’s accounted for 1-1-2 totals in for games for Frolunda since returning from his injury.

Noah saw his first game action with Bjorkloven earlier this week. Unfortunately, it ended badly for him. Tumbling into the boards, he was suffering another shoulder surgery, Apparently, this time, it was to the shoulder that wasn’t surgically repaired. He returned to Frolunda for further examination.

Older brother Liam, 20, like Noah formerly with Frolunda, is showing 10-8-18 numbers from 36 games for Bjorkloven.

“I feel I have a more offensive mindset and game to show,” Liam said as to why he was opting to drop down to Division II this season.

The younger Dower Nilsson, 18, was Detroit’s 73rd overall selection in the 2023 NHL entry draft. The siblings have brief previous stints as teammates.

Red Wings Picks Reunited

“We played a couple games in juniors together and the last season we played – when Noah played his first SHL game, I was loaned to Vasteras, but then I got loaned back to Frolunda,” Liam explained.

Noah’s first SHL shift was on a line with Liam. “It was pretty cool,” Noah recalled. “It’s fun to be out there. It was a little bit nervous but it was fun.”

Liam Dower Nilsson was chosen 134th overall  by the Red Wings in the 2021 NHL entry draft. He was in Nashville last summer when Detroit would also select his brother.

“It was unbelievable,” Liam said of draft day. “Never really dared to think that’s going to happen. It was an amazing feeling for me and my dad and grandpa was there, and for Noah.”

Neither Dower Nilsson brother has signed a contract with the Red Wings.

His spectacular start to the SHL season has Detroit Red Wings 2023 first-round draft pick Axel Sandin Pellikka turning heads everywhere . . . including those on his own team’s bench.

Asked which of his Skelleftea teammates has been the most impressive this season, captain Jonathan Pudas didn’t hesitate when answering.

“It has to be Sandin Pellikka,” Pudas told SHL.se. “Everyone in the team knew his level, but he has impressed.”

With five goals through 12 games, Sandin Pellikka (17th overall, 2023) is leading all SHL defensemen in tallies. Only 11 players in the league have more goals than him. Sandin Pellikka, 18, is second overall in goals scored by junior-aged players.

Dower Nilsson Lighting Lamps

Another Red Wings prospect is lighting lamps with regularity in the Allsvenskan, the Swedish Second Division. Liam Dower Nilsson (134th, 2021) is atop the Allsvenskan with eight goals scored for IF Bjorkloven. He’s sixth in the league scoring race with 12 points.

Granted, it is Tier II of Swedish hockey, so maybe take the totals with a grain of salt. Still, it’s worth noting that Dower Nilsson was able to tally just three times in 32 games last season while toiling for Vasteras in the Allsvenskan.

Red Wings Pick Buchelnikov Nets FIrst KHL Goal Of Season

Left-winger Dmitri Buchelnikov (52nd, 2022) has played six KHL games for Admiral Vladivostok since he was sent there on loan by SKA St. Petersburg, and he’s finally on the scoreboard.

Buchelnikov is showing one goal and one assist from six KHL games this season. He’s averaging 9:49 of ice time since the move to Admiral.

Danielson A Hero Upon Brandon Return

Center Nate Danielson (9th, 2023) has only scored one goal since returning from Detroit to the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL, but it was a big one. He tallied the only goal of the game in a 1-0 overtime win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

“Good players come through when it matters most and a big-time player made a big-time play in overtime to give us the win,” Wheat Kings coach Marty Murray told the Brandon Sun.

Through seven games, Danielson is showing 1-4-5 totals.

Gibson Stepping Up For Soo

In the OHL, defenseman Andrew Gibson (42nd, 2023) is also off to an impressive start with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. He’s 12th among OHL defenseman in scoring. Gibson has collected 2-7-9 numbers through 11 games.

The 6-foot-4, 206-pound rearguard accounted for four assists in a game against the Flint Firebirds. Gibson also produced a goal and two assists in another game facing the Sarnia Sting. His plus-9 rating is tied for third amongst OHL blueliners. Gibson has only been a minus in one game this season.

Kevin Constantine was once coaching the San Jose Sharks to a shock playoff series win over the Detroit Red Wings. With the latest developments in Constantine’s world, it wouldn’t be shocking if he were never coaching another game.

The WHL is suspending Constantine, coach of the Wenatchee Wild, indefinitely for what the league is terming making derogatory comments of a discriminatory nature.

Should Constantine wish to return to coaching in the WHL, he will be required to formally apply for reinstatement to the WHL Commissioner. Constantine will not be eligible to apply for reinstatement until July 2025 at the earliest.

Oddly enough, Constantine’s ouster comes in the same season that the WHL’s Lethbridge Hurricanes were hiring Mike Babcock disciple Bill Peters to coach their club. A few years back, Peters was handed his dismissal from the AHL Rockford IceHogs. He was let go for uttering racial slurs at player Akim Aliu.

Babcock was tendering his resignation as coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets last month. It became known that he was taking his player’s phones and rifling through their photos and texts.

Detroit Red Wings prospect Dmitri Buchelnikov is back in the KHL. The 52nd player chosen in the 2022 NHL entry draft is still the property of SKA St. Petersburg, though he won’t be playing for them in the KHL.

Following the outcome of a blockbuster and extremely complicated trade, Buchelnikov is moving to Admiral, a KHL club playing in the Far East Russian city of Voskresensk. His shift is just one element in a complicated procedure that is landing Admiral goalie Nikita Serebryakov with struggling SKA.

In exhange for Serebryakov, Admiral is receiving Buchelnikov and goaltender Sergei Ivanov on season loan from SKA. Forward Nikita Anokhovsky and the rights to Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Daniil Miromanov were dealt to Admiral to complete the transaction.

Buried with SKA Neva of the Russian second division with SKA, Buchelnikov figures to be getting an outstanding opportunity, slotting into a key role with Admiral.

“Dmitri will fit perfectly into the top six (forwards),” noted Mikhail Skryl of SportExpress.ru. “Admiral clearly lacked creative forwards.”

Dower Nilsson Finding Scoring Touch

Red Wings draftee Liam Dower Nilsson is off to a hot start with IF Bjorkloven of Hockey Allsvensken, the Swedish second division. In five games, the forward Detroit chose 134th overall in the 2021 NHL entry draft is showing 5-1-6 totals.

The 20-year-old center/winger is still without a Red Wings contract. The team will have until June 1 of next year to determine whether to sign Dower Nilsson to an NHL pact or relinquish his rights. His younger brother Noah Dower Nilsson, Detroit’s 73rd overall choice in the 2023 draft, remains out of action with Frolunda of the SHL following offseason shoulder surgery.

Another Swedish forward prospect Maximilian Kilpinen is showing 6-1-7 totals through seven games with MoDo in Sweden’s J20 league. He was Detroit’s 129th overall choice in the 2022 NHL draft.

Ex-Red Wings Goalie Larsson Is Perfect

Once thought of as the Red Wings goalie of the future, the future is suddenly looking bright for Filip Larsson. Two games into his first season in the SHL, the Leksand netminder has made two starts, posting a pair of shutout victories.

“Crazy fun for me to get this start,” Larsson, 25, told Expressen.se. “I play well and get good help from the defenders. The whole team helps. It’s calm and nice in front of me, so I can focus on my job.”

Drafted 167th overall by Detroit in 2016, Larsson, spent the 2019-20 season with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins and ECHL Toledo Walleye. In Leksand, his teammates include Red Wings defense prospect Anton Johansson.

Pulkkinen Back In KHL

Kunlun Red Star of the KHL now go three-deep in former Red Wings players. The club has signed forward Teemu Pulkkinen. A Detroit player for 70 games from 2013-16, Pulkkinen scored 11 goals for the Red Wings. He’s made previous KHL stops with Dinamo Minsk, Lokomotiv Yaroslavl and Traktor Chelyabinsk.

With Kunlun, Pulkkinen is teaming up with fellow ex-Wings Jake Chelios and Ryan Sproul. Former Grand Rapids forward Colin Campbell is also playing for Kunlun Red Star.

When the Swedish roster was revealed for the upcoming World Junior Summer Showcase, the name of Detroit Red Wings 2023 draftee Noah Dower Nilsson was missing. The reason for his absence is now becoming apparent.

According to a report from Henrik Leman of Rackapucker.com, Dower Nilsson, selected 73rd overall by Detroit, recently underwent shoulder surgery and will be out of action for at least two months.

Dower Nilsson missed the final day of Red Wings development camp while he and his older brother, 2021 Detroit draftee Liam Dower Nilsson (134th overall), were both undergoing upper body imaging.

“Liam and Noah went to get some imaging done on their upper body,” Red Wings director of player development Dan Cleary said at the time. “They just had to get some imaging done. It’s just easier to get it done here so we could see it. You just don’t want anything down the road. That’s all it was.”

Evidently, in Noah’s case, they found something that was causing alarm and ultimately, was rectified via surgery.

Big Season For Red Wings Pick

During the 2022-23 campaign, the younger of the Dower Nilsson brothers got his first taste of playing against men. He saw three games of action with Frolunda in the SHL and made his debut skating alongside his older brother.

“It was pretty cool,” Noah recalled. “It’s fun to be out there. It was a little bit nervous but it was fun.”

Frolunda is in a transition phase in terms of the club roster, and there’s opportunity for Noah, 18, to grab some ice time at forward. That being the case, the shoulder surgery could prove even more problemitic.

While in Detroit, Noah was admitting that he does have shoulder issues that he’s been dealing with for much of last season. He spent some time on the shelf due to a shoulder ailment.

“Yeah, it was tough,” Noah said. “It was my shoulder. Popped out for the first time. It was tough. Rehab, seven weeks.

“Then I come back and it feels good. Both shoulders are a little bit not so good.”

Apparently, not so good that surgery was required to fix the problem.

Dower-Nilssons are second brothers to be drafted by Detroit

If Liam and Noah Dower Nilsson go on to gain the level of hockey notoreity attained by the previous brother act drafted by the Detroit Red Wings, they’ll leave quite the legacy.

The 1974 NHL amateur draft, as it was known then, saw Detroit selecting Marquette Iron Rangers forward Jack Carlson 117th overall. The following season, the Wings tabbed his brother Steve Carlson 131st overall from the NAHL’s Johnstown Jets.

Steve would go on to play Steve Hanson, one of the notorious Hanson brothers, in the hockey cult classic Slap Shot. Jack was also supposed to portray a Hanson brother in the film, but a recall to the WHA’s Minnesota Fighting Saints left him unavailable to fill the role.

Certainly, the Dower Nilsson brothers are unlikely to terrorize hockey in similar fashion. Up-tempo skill is their brand.

“I think we have some same (similarities) the way we play the game but I’m a more offensive winger,” Noah said. “Liam is more a two-way center. I learned a lot from him through this year. We always compete against each other.”

That figures to again be the case in 2023-24. The two did get some ice time together in the SHL last season with Frolunda. This season, while Noah will remain with Frolunda, Liam is joining Bjorkloven of the Allsvenskan, the second tier of Swedish hockey.

Liam Seeking To Show Red Wings What He Can Do

“I’m trying to get a bigger role there and play my game and focus on my things to get better and try to come back to be the player I was in junior,” Liam explained as the reason behind the move. “I feel I have a more offensive mindset and game to show that I haven’t really shown these two years and especially this year.

“It’s going to be good for me.”

Detroit ws selecting Liam 134th overall selection in 2021. That year, the entire NHL entry draft was being conducted via Zoom calls. This year in Nashville, the entire Dower Nilsson family was on hand to share the moment with Noah as he was taken with the 73rd overall pick.

“It was unbelievable,” Liam said. “Never really dared to think that’s going to happen. It was an amazing feeling for me and my dad and grandpa, who was there, and for Noah.”

Talking to the two brothers, it’s abundantly evident how the bond between the two of them strengthens their resolve to someday skate together as Red Wings.

“It means a lot,” Noah said. “He’s helped me a lot. He has always helped me my whole life, being a big support for me. I love him so much.”

For the second time in a week, a Detroit Red Wings draft pick has been demoted from the Swedish Hockey League.

Rogle is sending forward Theodor Niederbach down to MoDo of Hockey Allsvenskan, thre second division of Swedish hockey. Last week, Frolunda dropped center Liam Dower Nilsson down to Vasteras of Hockey Allsvenskan.

Both demotions are for the remainder of the 2022-23 hockey season.

Of the two moves, certainly Niederbach dropping down a division is the much more alarming development. The 20-year-old center/right-winger spent the entire 2021-22 season in the SHL with Frolunda, prooducing 9-7-16 numbers through 51 games while skating mostly in a bottom-six forward role.

Selected 51st overall by the Red Wings in the 2020 NHL entry draft, Niederbach made a move to Rogle in the summer. He was feeling that there would be a better chance for him to be skating in a role of more prominence with the club.

“I feel like one more year in Sweden fits well,” Niederbach, 20, explained at the time. “Rogle feels like the right place to help me take the next step.”

That isn’t how things would be turning out for him however. Through 17 games with Rogle, Niederbach’s stat line read one goal, zero assists.

Dropping down to the second tier of Swedish hockey certainly doesn’t bode well for Niederbach’s hopes of making the move to North American pro hockey for the 2023-24 season.

Dower Nilsson Also Struggling

Niederbach’s departure was definitely playing a role in the creation of an opprtunity for Dower Nilsson to be making the move full-time from the junior ranks to the SHL with Frolunda. The 19-year-old center was the 151st overall selection of the Red Wings in the 2021 NHL entry draft.

Like Niederbach, Dower Nilsson was struggling to gain a foothold in Sweden’s top league. Accounting for a goal and three assists in 19 games, his average ice time per game was barely over seven minutes.

He’s picked up one assist in three games with Vasteras.

Projections of 30-40 points for Red Wings top pick Marco Kasper

Last season was a big one for Detroit Red Wings prospects playing in Sweden. Simon Edvinsson, Albert Johansson and Elmer Soderblom are all currently participating in the Red Wings Rookie Tournament in Traverse City, Michigan. All played starring roles for their Swedish clubs during the 2021-22 season.

The Swedish Hockey League regular season is getting underway on Saturday, and Swedish hockey pundits are projecting big things again from Red Wings prospects such as Marco Kasper and William Wallinder, and to a lesser extent, Liam Dower Nilsson and Theodor Niederbach.

Sanny Lindstrom of Sweden’s SportExpressen is a big fan of Kasper’s work. He’s seeing Kasper playing a major role with Rögle this season.

“Austrian super talent Marco Kasper is a player to keep an eye on,” Lindstrom writes about the player the Red Wings selected eighth overall in the 2022 NHL entry draft. “During the playoffs last year, Kasper was one of Rögle’s best players and a lot says that he will be able to take over there this year.

“From what I’ve seen from Kasper during the CHL, he has every opportunity to make a real impact this season. I don’t see it as an impossibility at all that Kasper can score between 30 and 40 points this season.”

Sportbladet’s Thomas Roos also likes Kasper and Frolunda’s Dower Nilsson, but with a caveat. “Kasper and Dower Nilsson are dependent on their surroundings,” Roos writes. “But if they take opportunity with the right players, the points will come.”

Red Wings Pick Wallinder Should Take Another Step

Lindstrom thinks that Rögle defenseman Wallinder, a 2020 Red Wings second-round pick, will follow the pattern that Detroit’s 2021-22 Calder Trophy winner Moritz Seider did and blossom into a position of dominance along the blueline.

“William Wallinder made a big impression last year and made big strides during the season,” Lindstrom notes. “Since Rögle did not replace a player like Lucas Ekeståhl Jonsson, one certainly hopes that Wallinder can fill the role that he is leaving behind.

“This probably means that Wallinder will get to play more frequently in offensive situations and power play. It is precisely in this way that Rögle has worked with great success for several years.”

Niederbach A Bit Of a Wild Card

The offseason move of Niederbach from Frolunda to Rögle was designed to provide him more of a chance to see ice time. Thus far, though in CHL ply, that hasn’t been the case. He’s still skating in the bottom six forwards for Rögle and was a scratch for one game.

“Theodor Niederbach was not satisfied with his role in Frölunda and therefore chose to go to Rögle,” Lindstrom points out. “It was of course a failure for Frölunda to lose such a talent.

“I suspect Detroit, who signed Niederbach, may have had a hand in selecting Rögle. The competition in Rögle is hardly less than it was in Frölunda last year and it will therefore be interesting to see if Niederbach can step up this season and get a more advanced role.”

You don’t take a look at Vancouver Canucks coach Bruce Boudreau behind the bench and immediately think about Bo Jackson. And yet, in his younger days, there were professional baseball teams that were willing to give Gabby a shot at becoming a two-sport star.

He’s definitely one of the more interesting characters in the NHL. A huge WWE fan, Boudreau won two Memorial Cups with the Toronto Marlboros, played in the NHL and WHA and was a member of the supporting cast in the hockey cult classic Slap Shot.

Next time you sit down to watch the antics of the Charlestown Chiefs, check out No. 7 for the Hyannisport Presidents. That’s Boudreau. And Reg Dunlop’s apartment with the Canadian flag over the bed? That was the place where Boudreau was living while playing for the NAHL Johnstown Jets.

But it was a few years before launching his film career that Boudreau almost made it on the diamond.

“I could run believe it or not, and I could hit,” Boudreau told Rob Simpson of Vancouver Hockey Now.

A prominent amateur baseball player in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Boudreau attended MLB tryout camps and was offered a contract by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

“I just thought I was going to be a hockey player,” Boudreau explained. “It wasn’t until years later, you see Bo Jackson playing two sports, and guys like that, and I thought ‘man I should have tried that, that would have been great!’ I look at it now and I wish I would have done it.”
