Reports say Boston Bruins Vezina Trophy-winning goalie Linus Ullmark used his modified no-trade clause to nix a trade to a Western Conference team.

Boston Hockey Now’s Jimmy Murphy reported that the team was not the Los Angeles Kings, even though the Kings were aggressively pursuing a goalie.

In accordance with his contract, Ullmark could list 16 teams on his no-trade list. Murphy reported that Ullmark likes living in Boston. Murphy was able to confirm that 14 of the teams on Ullmark’s no-trade list were in the Western Conference.

The Bruins were willing to deal Ullmark because they boast another quality goalie in Jeremy Swayman. He has played 36 games this season, while Ullmark has played 31.

GM Steve Yzerman has recalled Jonatan Berggren from the Griffins to play tonight for Detroit in the road game against the Vegas Golden Knights. The Red Wings are 0-2 on this road trip and need a win against a Vegas team that has had trouble winning at home. The injury-plagued Golden Knights have a five-game home losing streak. They have also lost seven out of their last eight overall. They pushed all in at the trade deadline, adding former Red Wing Anthony Mantha,  plus Noah Hanifin and Tomas Hertl. The Golden Knights have to wait on Hertl who is injured.

GM Steve Yzerman’s decision not to pay for high priced rental properties at this NHL trade deadline came down to Yzerman liking what he sees on the ice from his players.

“Ultimately, I like to think part of why we weren’t very active this year at the deadline is we like the depth we have within the organization,” Yzerman said.

Although Yzerman wouldn’t phrase it like this, he gave his team a vote of confidence by being less active. His only move was trading away Klim Kostin who couldn’t crack the lineup. Yzerman shipped him to San Jose mostly to shed his $2 million salary for next season.

Red Wings Have Help Coming

“We have some good players in Grand Rapids, players that we signed last summer,” Yzerman said. “Some of our young prospects playing there provide us good depth. So, sitting at the deadline, looking at areas that could help us ultimately giving up a first- or a second- or a third-round pick for depth, we’re better off bringing up our guys from Grand Rapids for that.”

He didn’t like what teams were asking for rentals, especially given the risk of disrupting his team chemistry.

“I think the atmosphere within the team, at least it’s my understanding and my impression as close as I can get to the locker room is we have very good team spirit,” Yzerman said. “There’s a lot of enthusiasm. You hear the players talk about how much they’re enjoying playing together. So that’s encouraging and they have gotten us into a good spot.”

The Red Wings and Tampa Bay Lightning hold down the two wild card spots in the Eastern Conference, and the New York Islanders are two points behind.  The Islanders own a five-game winning streak and their GM Lou Lamoriello decided to stand pat.

Lightning Were Aggressive

The Lightning are still in win-now mode and acquired rambunctious defenseman Matt Dumba from Arizona and forward Anthony Duclair from San Jose. The New Jersey Devils also traded for goalie Jake Allen from Montreal and they have an outside shot of catching Detroit.

It’s possible the Lightning gained an advantage with their moves, but they are not in the same position as the Red Wings.

“I balance for where we’re at – an improving team that has a chance to make the playoffs, if we can make moves that help us get into the playoffs,” Yzerman said. “But we’re trying to build. We’re not one of those top teams that’s willing to give up first-round picks and top prospects to get in on some of those rental players or high-priced free agents at the deadline.”

Yzerman said he feels like he now has players in Grand Rapids for his Plan B.  Jonatan Berggren is having an exceptional season at forward and Yzerman is also bullish on Simon Edvinsson. He likes what he sees in Grand Rapids as well.

“We’ll sit pat with our group and if we get injuries we’ll go to Grand Rapids,” Yzerman said. “We feel those players are comparable to what we were able to do unless we were willing to give up our prime assets.”

(Editor’s Note: We will be updating this throughout the day for Red Wings rumors and news about the Eastern Conference playoff race.)

Per Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman’s tradition, nobody around the NHL knew what Yzerman would  do before today’s 3 p.m. trade deadline.

You don’t want to play poker with Yzerman. He holds his cards close to the vest.

Turns out he didn’t do much.

The Red Wings had only made a minor deal, moving Klim Kostin to the San Jose Sharks. NHL Network reported just after 2 p.m. that the team was trying to land an impact forward to play in its top six.

The Tampa Bay Lightning, tied with Detroit for a wild card spot, improved its lineup late in the day by acquiring feisty defenseman Matt Dumba from the Arizona Coyotes. They landed forward Anthony Duclair Thursday.

The New York Islanders, two points behind Detroit and Tampa, didn’t make a move.

Former Red Wings goalie Magnus Hellberg moved from the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Florida Panthers. Hellberg has been playing in the AHL. The Penguins get Ludovic Waeber and a conditional seventh-round pick.

History says Yzerman leans toward being aggressive. But he is thorough in his approach, and weighs all of the factors, including if he wants to disrupt the team’s chemistry. That’s been a factor in their better-than-expected play.

Deadline Day Minute by Minute

9:53: It’s difficult to know how much interest there is in Red Wings defenseman Justin Holl who is the team’s No. 7 defenseman. The Red Wings presumably trying to move him if only to create room for an acquisition. Holl hasn’t played since Jan. 31.

The bigger obstacle is his contract, which has two seasons remaining ($3.4 million per season) after this season. That’s a hard sell.

Keeping Up With Rivals

9:57: Detroit fans are undoubtedly keeping one eye on what Eastern Conference playoff contenders are doing on this deadline day. The New Jersey Devils still believe they can catch Detroit and Tampa Bay if they land a goalie. They boast a skilled group. So if you are wondering why the New Jersey Devils are moving 26-goal scorer Tyler Toffoli, know it is about Toffoli’s contract status. He will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. They don’t believe they can sign him.

10:20: We don’t know what NHL teams think about the Red Wings’ talent, but they do appreciate former Red Wings. The Vegas Golden Knight acquired 20-goal scorer Anthony Mantha. The Edmonton Oilers traded for Troy Stecher from the Arizona Coyotes Thursday as a depth defenseman. They gave up a seventh round pick.

10:34: According to Sportsnet, the Washington Capitals traded Evgeny Kuznetsov to the Carolina Hurricanes for a third round pick. Washington is retaining 50% of Kuznetsov’s $6.65 million for this season and next. He was in the AHL after coming out of the NHL/NHLPA Players Assistance Program. The Hurricanes are clearly pushing all in an effort to win the Stanley Cup.

11:37: Jeremy Rutherford of the Athletic is wired into the St. Louis Blues and he’s thinking they are not going to trade Buchnevich. That changes the forward landscape in the trade market. He is a desirable player.

11:40 TSN’s  Darren Dreger reports Tyler Toffoli is going to the Winnipeg Jets.  The Devils have  work to do to replace Toffoli’s goals. The Devils got a second round pick in 2025 and a third rounder in 2024

Yzerman Gets On the Board

1:00 Red Wings traded tough forward Klim Kostin to the San Jose Sharks for AHL defenseman Radim Simek and a seventh rounder. The Red Wings move Kostin’s $2 million cap hit for next season. Will they add toughness elsewhere?

2:00: The New Jersey Devils landed a goalie, acquiring Jake Allen from Montreal for a third-round pick.

2:05:  The Philadelphia Flyers have acquired veteran D Erik Johnson from the Buffalo Sabres. There was speculation among NHL sources that the Red Wings were also in the bidding for the 2006 first overall pick.

2:10: NHL Network reports the Red Wings are trying to add a forward to play in their top six.

2:45: The Tampa Bay Lightning gave up a fifth round pick to the Arizona Coyotes for gritty defenseman Matt Dumba and a seventh rounder. There’s no salary retention involved in this deal.

The Pittsburgh Penguins reportedly hope to trade Jake Guentzel by this evening, and are looking for a big return.

TSN’s Darren Dreger says the Penguins are looking for a first-round pick, a young NHL player and prospects. The Penguins prospect pool is shallow and bringing in a King’s Ransom for Guentzel could help the team restock.

The Vancouver Canucks are very interested, and at various times several teams have been mentioned, including the Detroit Red Wings. The Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars may also be a possibility.

Teams have to look at this as a rental because Guentzel will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. If he has gone this far, he probably will want to explore his options instead of re-upping with a new team.

The Pittsburgh Penguins haven’t been sellers at the NHL trade deadline since 2006.  You certainly are not going to see Kyle Dubas move Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin or Kris Letang before the March 8 NHL deadline.

But Dubas was clear Wednesday that it’s not business as usual this trade deadline. With regard to re-signing Jake Guentzel, Dubas said:

“It’s obviously at the forefront … I think the way our whole strategy plays out in the next two-and-a-half weeks, how our team continues to play, will dictate the answer at the trade deadline We’ll continue to have those discussions leading up to that and then afterward. But I would say I understand how valuable he’s been as a teammate, a person in the community, and as a contributor helping this team win a Stanley Cup. So, it’s important, but we have to take stock of where we are at and be realistic about the fact that one of the issues we have is a need to get younger. We have a lot of guys in their 30s signed. Some of them are the best players in the history of the franchise.”

PHN’s Dan Kingerski took a stab at reading between the lines on Dubas words.

“Those words could be heard and read a few different ways,” Kingerski wrote, “but the words after “but” sure seemed to indicate that Guentzel will not be a Penguins winger next season, and if the team isn’t in the playoff race very soon, he won’t be a Penguins winger past March 8.”

Dubas said he’s not going to give up any draft capital in the name at the deadline. And if he wants to get younger, it could certainly mean he moves some veterans for prospects or additional draft picks.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

  • The Red Wings rewarded Michael Rasmussen’s development into a strong, two-way forward by giving him a four-year contract extension.
  • Here’s what Detroit’s playoff rivals may do at the trade deadline. The New Jersey Devils likely will add a goalie.

  • Why has former Detroit player Tyler Bertuzzi‘s offensive numbers so low?  And how did Anthony Mantha rehabilitate his game in Washington?

Montreal Hockey Now’s Marc Dumont writes today that the Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes may end up being the third man in to help broker big deals for the March 8 deadline.

With plenty of  cap space available (more than $13 million in LTIR space), the Canadiens are in a position to take salary in a three-way deal. For example, Adam Henrique’s salary cap hit is $5.85 million. Montreal could help Anaheim move him.

“Adam Henrique is the last top-9 center available on the rental market that could realistically make a difference on a contending team,” Dumont writes. “But he comes at quite the price tag. Even if the Anaheim Ducks were to retain 50% of his salary, that would only reduce his cap hit to $2.912 million; a cost that many contending teams would be unable to fit on their roster without having to trade another player.”

The Habs can step in as the middle man, retaining another half of Henrique’s salary before moving him to his final destination. They could pick up a draft pick, or prospect, for their troubles. The Canadiens have one salary retention remaining they can use.

Just how important has team chemistry been to the Detroit Red Wings recent success?

That’s a question that Detroit general manager Steve Yzerman has to wrestle with as he plans his actions for the March 8 NHL trade deadline. History tells us Yzerman wants to make a move. He has shown himself to be an aggressive, decisive manager, someone who isn’t timid about changing personnel.

But this year is different because this team seems to have a bond that has helped them win games with late rallies and push for a playoff spot that was well out of their reach a year ago.

General manager  Steve Yzerman probably wouldn’t be able to find a forward and defenseman in the NHL trade market that will help his Detroit team as much as the return of Patrick Kane and Ben Chiarot will do for his team.

Even if he could find comparable players, the price tag likely would be too heavy for a still-rebuilding team.

Thursday’s Detroit Hockey Now story makes it clear that coach Derek Lalonde is to have a healthy Red Wings lineup back. Kane, a three-time Stanley Cup champion, could be particularly useful as Detroit tries to earn a playoff spot for the first time since 2016. Kane signed with Detroit earlier this season after recovering from offseason hip surgery.

“It’s tough, especially this year coming back in, just starting to get my feet back under me here and you go through a different injury,” Kane said. “It’s a little depressing, especially when you’re out a little bit. But excited to get back on the ice after the break here. I feel pretty good, so hopefully I’ll have another good practice (Friday).”

As our story points out, the 230-pound Chiarot offers a physical shutdown presence he’s a stalwart on the top penalty killing unit.

Meanwhile, around the NHL, trade rumors abound now that we have less than a month today before the March 8 trade deadline. Scouts from 15 different teams attended the Calgary vs. New Jersey game. Teams are interested in Calgary’s Noah Hanifin and  Jacob Markstrom.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

When the clock strikes midnight tonight, there will be one month remaining before the NHL trade deadline. The Hockey Now network has several stories today about what teams are looking to accomplish.

After going all in last year, Boston Bruins GM Don Sweeney may be dialing back a bit this season. One of the undercurrents of this year’s draft talk is that we won’t see as many first-round picks exchanging hands as we did last season when 13 first rounders (over three draft years) were dealt in the weeks leading up to the 2023 draft.

Teams simply don’t have the first rounders to give, or don’t want to part with a first-rounder two years in a row.

That doesn’t mean they won’t change their mind as deadline draws near.

We have stories about Montreal readying for the trade deadline, and about how Buffalo Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams has multiple discussions with some teams. How many teams are interested in Nashville defenseman Alex Carrier.

Detroit’s Steve Yzerman may have to wait until the last moment to decide whether his team is a buyer or seller. That’s always an issue for teams on the cusp of making the playoffs. The Red Wings have a 50.7% probability of making the playoffs today.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

  • Remember former NHL defenseman Janne Niinimaa? He’s the former Philadelphia Flyers defenseman who was beat by Darren McCarty on Detroit Red Wings’ Stanley Cup clinching goal in 1997. He’s in trouble with the law.
  •  The Red Wings have a shot to establish a new team record for having players scoring 10 or more goals.
  • Nicklas Lidstrom names the most talented teammate he ever had. It’s Pavel Datsyuk.

Red Wings Next Game

Detroit players return to the ice Thursday for the first of two practices before Saturday’s 1 p.m. game against the Vancouver Canucks (34-11-5) at Little Caesars Arena. The Canucks are 8-0-2 in their last 10 and 16-7-3.

Buffalo: It sounds like the Buffalo Sabres will be active at the NHL trade deadline. GM Kevin Adams says he has had multiple conversations with some teams about deals.  Erik Johnson and Victor Olofsson seem like possible trade candidates.

Calgary: Jonathan Huberdeau has instantly chemistry with newly-acquired forward Andrei Kuzmenko. That’s good news for the Calgary Flames.

Montreal: Marco D’Amico explains what’s next for the Montreal Canadiens as they prepare for the trade deadline. The Habs have players who can be moved, including goalie Jake Allen.

Nashville: Michael Gallagher weighs in whether the Nashville Predators will have multiple suitors for Alex Carrier.

Pittsburgh: Lars Eller provides a frank assessment about the Pittsburgh Penguins‘ biggest problems.
