Kevin’s Morning Hash: Red Wings Trade Targets, Eichel Talk and Big Changes With the Avs
The Detroit Red Wings have a King’s Ransom in cap space this summer. Plenty of speculation about the Red Wings looking at picking up assets by trading for bad contracts.
But what isn’t getting enough attention is how the money might be used to acquire good contracts, or intriguing players who might have to be dealt because the team has cap issues. For example, the Red Wings may call the St. Louis Blues to discuss 24-year-old Vince Dunn. He can’t be protected in the expansion draft.
The Pittsburgh Penguins, Carolina Hurricanes and Minnesota Wild are other teams that might move a defenseman they don’t want to move to clear cap space or because they can’t protect him. Detroit GM Steve Yzerman will explore all of these options.
Rumor of the Day
Teams are saying Buffalo’s demands for Jack Eichel are high, but there are reports that the Minnesota Wild have engaged in talks with Buffalo. Expect the Vegas Golden Knights to explore the Eichel situation. They have to land an elite center this summer. Let’s not forget that the 2015 draft yielded a bunch of skilled players. Eichel ranks third in points (355) behind Mitch Marner (358) and Connor McDavid (574). Eichel is ahead of Sebastian Aho (320), Mikko Rantanen (316) and Mathew Barzal (252).

Washington: Every time we mentioned available defensemen (for two years), Trevor van Riemsdyk’s name would pop up in our search or your comments. The Washington Capitals finally plucked van Riemsdyk out of Carolina, and they were pretty happy with the results.Â
