The Seattle Kraken traded former Red Wings prospect Calle Jarnkrok to the Calgary Flames for three draft picks, including a second-rounder

It was about a decade ago Detroit Red Wings fans were hoping their team had discovered the next Henrik Zetterberg in the person of Calle Jarnkrok.

Wednesday, Jarnkrok was traded to his third NHL team when the Seattle Kraken moved him to the Calgary Flames were for a second- third- and fourth-round draft pick.

Jarnkrok, 30, never played for the Red Wings. He was dealt to the Nashville Predators in the David Legwand deal (2014). The Red Wings moved him because they believed he would never develop into a premium offensive player. They were right. But Jarnkrok developed into a valuable middle six forward who nets 14-16 goals every season.

The Flames needed a No. 3 center. They wanted Jarnkrok because they believe they are capable of making a lengthy playoff run, and Jarnkrok’s secondary scoring, and responsible defensive play, could help.

The Red Wings have not yet made a deal, but the Florida Panthers made a bold move Wednesday, landing shutdown defenseman Ben Chiarot from Montreal. The Panthers gave up a first-round pick in 2023, a fourth-round pick in 2022, plus forward prospect Ty Smilanic, a third round pick in 2020.
