It had to happen some time, and that time was Monday night for the Grand Rapids Griffins. The streak is over.

The Griffins lost for the first time in nearly two months, falling to the Cleveland Monsters 5-3.

It was the first regulation loss in 18 games (13-0-3-2) for the Griffins, whose streak began Jan. 12.

Grand Rapids took the lead in the first period on a power-play goal by Jonatan Berggren, who recorded his 27th point in his last 24 games.

Cleveland scored three consecutive goals in the second period before Matt Luff scored late to make it 3-2 going into the third.

Dominik Shine tied it early in the third, but Cleveland’s Trey Fix-Wolansky scored the game-winner midway through the period. The Monsters put it out of reach with an empty-net goal in the final minute by Brendan Gaunce, his second goal of the game.

It was the longest point streak for the Griffins since a 19-game string in 2015.

Berggren scored his team-leading 19th goal of the season to extend a personal points streak to six (3-3—6), while Zach Aston-Reese extended his points streak to five games (3-2-—5).

Michael Hutchinson took the loss in net for the Griffins, ending a personal points streak at nine (7-0-2).

The Monsters won their second game in a row and have recorded a point in nine of their last 10 games. The win gave Cleveland a little breathing room in the AHL North, where the Monsters lead second-place Syracuse by five points.

Grand Rapids remains 10 points behind first-place Milwaukee in the AHL Central. The Griffins play on the road against the Admirals on Saturday.

The Griffins are off until Friday, when they play host to Chicago. They’ll be back in Cleveland on March 12.

The Detroit Red Wings probably thought more than once this season that three goalies on the roster were too many. It turns three wasn’t enough.

Hit by a pair of goaltending injuries to Alex Lyon and Ville Husso, the Red Wings found themselves signing Michael Hutchinson to an NHL contract. He joins James Reimer to form the team’s goalie tandem at least through Christmas. The Red Wings have three games over the next four nights starting Wednesday in Winnipeg. They are home Friday against the Philadelphia Flyers and then travel to New Jersey to play the Devils Saturday.

The Red Wings also placed Klim Kostin on the injured list, resulting from the massive hit he took from Anaheim defenseman Radko Gudas.

The Red Wings will be off on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and the day after Christmas. The hope is that Lyon will be ready right after Christmas.

“Ville will be unavailable for us for a while here, so more in that week to week category,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “Alex had his first workout today but I do not see him available for us until probably after Christmas.”

Lyon suffered an upper body injury Saturday in Philadelphia and Husso had to be helped off the ice in the first period of Monday’s 4-3 loss to the Ducks.

Red Wings Await Perron Decision

Meanwhile, the Red Wings will find out later today whether David Perron’s six-game suspension (for attempt to injure Artem Zub) will be cut to five games. He has his appeal today at 4 p.m. Perron has already sat out five games.

This is a frustrating time for the Red Wings who are 1-5-1 over the past seven games.

“We got to get our game back in order,” Lalonde said. “Obviously, we lost our identity a little bit with this stretch so I think it’s on all of us to try to be a little better. It’s on us to get this in order.”

Hutchinson, 33, has 153 games of NHL experience. That’s 107 more than Lyon has. This season, Hutchinson is 5-7-1 with a 2.98 goals-against average in Grand Rapids. His new deal is a two-way contract.

Detroit GM Steve Yzerman could have promoted top goalie prospect Sebastian Cossa from Grand Rapids. But he is 21 and only has played 14 games in the American Hockey League.

Detroit’s goalie shuffle continued with John Lethemon movig from the Toledo Walleye to the Grand Rapids. That leaves Jan Bednar (Drafted 107th overall by Detroit in 2020) as Toledo’s No. 1 goalie.

In the span of two games, the Detroit Red Wings have gone from three healthy goalies down to one. Late in the first period of Monday’s game at Little Caesars Arena, No. 1 netminder Ville Husso departed with an apparent right leg injury.

Husso slumped to the ice at the conclusion of an Anaheim Ducks power play with the Ducks leading 2-0. The Detroit net had been under siege for most of that power play.

When Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin was finally able to clear the puck from the zone, Husso went down on all fours. After stretching his legs for several seconds while speaking to the Red Wings athletic therapy staff, Husso made his departure from the game. He was moving gingerly and reluctant to put weight on his right leg.

James Reimer took over in net at that point. The Ducks beat Reimer just 1:26 after his entrance to up their advantage to 3-0.

The Red Wings later confirmed that Husso would not be returning to the game.

Red Wings Lost Lyon On Saturday

Alex Lyon, the third of three goalies on the Detroit roster, got the start Saturday at Philadelphia. He was forced to leave that game in the second period with what the team termed an upper-body injury.

Speaking earlier Monday, Lyon was seemingly confident that he could be back in the club’s lineup very quickly.

“I thought it was one thing and I was fortunate it was not that,” Lyon explained. “I’m feeling pretty good today. I’m optimistic.”

That optimism spllied over into Lyon’s projection ot a timeline for his return to action.

“I think sooner rather than later,” Lyon said. “The body feels pretty good. I think I’ll be able to get back on the ice pretty soon.”

The Red Wings play next on Wednesday at Winnipeg. They have two other goalies under contract. Sebastian Cossa, a 2021 first-round draft pick, is with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins. John Lethemon is playing in the ECHL with the Toledo Walleye.

Veteran NHLer Michael Hutchinson is also with Grand Rapids, but on an AHL contract. Detroit would need to sign him to an NHL deal in order to recall Hutchinson.

While the Red Wings had a Thanksgiving feast on the ice last week, winning all three games, the Grand Rapids Griffins split a pair at home. Still, there were some highlights down on the farm:

Berggren Red-Hot For Griffins

Jonatan Berggren has been on a tear in Grand Rapids since a brief call-up by the Red Wings earlier this month.

The 2018 second-rounder (No. 33 overall) had a goal and an assist in both weekend games against Manitoba, lifting him to 11 points on the season, second on the team. One of those came on the power  play in a 5-1  win on Friday night; Berggren has scored four goals in the Griffins’ last five games.

Simon Edvinsson (No. 6 overall in 2021) has a three-game point streak, picking up five assists, He’s third on the Griffins with 10 points this season. He and Albert Johansson are considered the odds-on favorites to join the Red Wing next season, although that is anything but guaranteed.

Austin Czarnik, recently returned to Grand Rapids by the Red Wings, has a four-game p0ints streak, including three goals. The Griffins are in sixth place in the AHL’s  Central Division.

Nate Danielson (No. 9 overall, 2023) had a hot streak for the Brandon Wheat Kings. He scored in three consecutive games, including two goals at Edmonton, from Nov. 17-22. The Red Wings’ top draft choice last summer has eight goals and 17 points this season.

Trey Augustine, (No. 41 overall, 2023) was one of the Big Ten’s Three Stars of the Week last week, He had 44 saves as Michigan State ended a 14-game losing streak to Minnesota with a 3-3 tie on Friday, then gave up six goals, three on the power play, in a 6-5 overtime loss on Saturday.

Speaking of goalies, Michael Hutchinson played in both games for the Griffins last week.  He’s 3-5-0 for the Griffins, with a goals-against average of 3.22 and a .891 save percentage.

There were a numbers of factors conspiring to cause the Detroit Red Wings to miss the NHL playoffs last season. Goaltending was certainly among them.

When Ville Husso’s game was fading down the stretch, there was no Plan B available to stop the bleeding. Neither Alex Nedeljkovic or Magnus Hellberg were proving to be capable NHL backups.

Certainly, there was no help coming from down on the farm. Jusse Olkinuora didn’t finish out the season with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins. When he did play, Victor Brattstrom usually was playing poorly.

Not offered a new contract by Detroit at season’s end, Brattstrom was opting to return to his native season. However, things aren’t going better for him therte. Recently, he was sent on loan by HV71 of the SHL to Bjorkloven of the Allsvenskan, the Swedish Second Division.

Meanwhile, in Detroit, newcomers James Reimer and Alex Lyon are experienced understudies to Husso this season. And Grand Rapids is getting splendid puckstopping from both veteran Michael Hutchinson and top prospect Sebastian Cossa. Cossa owns a .923 save percentage and 2.50 GAA in four games. Hutchinson is sitting with a 2.52 GAA and .919 save percentage.

Grand Rapids coach Dan Watson believes that access to mentoring from a longtime pro like Hutchinson is an ideal scenario to amp up Cossa’s learning curve.

“Michael’s been around, he’s played for a lot of teams, a lot of different coaches,” Watson said. “He can share those experiences, he can share what it’s like for some of these bus rides after a game.

“I think partnering him up with a veteran like that is gonna help him even more. I’m excited to see him continue to grow here.”

Red Wings Prospects Giving College Try

Two of the top four teams in the NCAA hockey top-10 rankings include Red Wings prospects in their lineups.

The Denver Pioneers are currently ranked second overall. Defenseman Shai Buium (36th overall, 2021) has accounted for 2-2-4 totals through eight games and is plus-7. Buium was part of Denver’s 2021-22 NCAA championship club that also including current Griffins players Carter Mazur and Antti Tuomisto.

Meanwhile, the North Dakota Fighting Hawks are fourth in the rankings. Left winger Dylan James (40th overall, 2022) shows three assists on his ledger from eight games. He drew a helper on Saturday as North Dakota beat the Boston Terriers 5-4 in overtime. Ir was North Dakota’s first win over BU since March 16, 1990.

It’s only a 186-mile drive from Toledo, Ohio to Grand Rapids. But it takes time to get there if you are a Detroit Red Wings prospect.

Sebastian Cossa wasn’t ready to make the trip last season. His call-up to the Grand Rapids Griffins resulted in an ugly 5.57 goals-against average and .771 save percentage. But a few months of continued improvement with the Toledo Walleye in the ECHL last season prepared him to be an impact performer in the American Hockey League early this season.

“It’s early, been feeling pretty good, just trying to give my team the best chance to win every night,” he said.

Cossa plays every other game, like he did last season in Toledo. Through three games, he owns a 2.38 goals-against average and .938 save percentage. Those are the kind of numbers the Red Wings want to see from Cossa, the 15th overall pick in 2021.

“He’s a great young kid,” said Michael Hutchinson, an ex-NHLer who was put in Grand Rapids to mentor Cossa. “He’s a good person, first and foremost, which goes a long way. We’re both excited for each other when we’ve had good games early on. He’s got an insane amount of talent. My role is just to be there for him if he has any questions or anything he needs. It’s fun working with someone that young and talented.”

Hutchinson a Mentor

The 33-year-old Hutchinson has logged 153 NHL games and been on the roster of several AHL teams. He acquired considerable goaltending wisdom during his tour of the NHL, which includes playing time with five NHL teams. The Red Wings asked him to go to Grand Rapids on a tryout contract. Part of Hutchinson’s mission, which isn’t in his contract, is to drop some knowledge on Cossa.

“When it comes to hockey, I’ve been through a lot over the years, many ups and downs,” Hutchinson said. “Learned a lot of things along the way I reflect on, maybe not in the moment but end of the season and given time, little things I handled well, things I didn’t handle well, things I wish I would have handled differently at the time. Tried to learn from that moving forward. That’s the kind of stuff in talking to him, I have that experience, been though it all, let in an overtime goal in Game 7, had to figure out a way to get over that. I’ve been called up, sent down, healthy scratched as a goalie. I’ve got a ton of different experiences, highs and lows. If I notice something and can give him a little tip here and there on how to mentally handle some stuff, I’m pretty much an open book and he knows he can ask me a question anytime and I’ll try to give him some advice from my own experience.”

Cossa Back With Watson

Cossa is appreciative of Hutchinson’s stories.

“A lot of experience there,” Cossa said. “He’s been really great. We’ve been talking every single day and each goalie session we have I feel like I picked something up each day. Kind of helping me progress my game, giving me pointers here and there. Our relationship has been growing. It’s been really good so far.”

It has also helped Cossa that his coach this season is Dan Watson, the same coach he had with the Walleye. Cossa played impressively for him down the stretch and in the postseason.

“Just the comfort level,” Cossa said. “Obviously, he makes me feel comfortable here. He’s done a really good job just integrating his culture into the Griffins room and guys are really going to battle with him.”

There’s still a learning curve.

“But it was nice to come up here and play a couple of games last year, see what to expect,”  Cossa said. “It’s been a good start to the season. My defensemen have helped me a lot back there with some key blocks and stuff like that. Just continuing to grow. Definitely some more learning curves along the way but confidence is high right now. I go into each game confident in my abilities.”

Red Wings prospects made their presence known over the weekend,  despite the Grand Rapids Griffins getting swept on the road.

The Griffins lost a pair of games to the Colorado Eagles, 6-3 on Friday and 2-1 Saturday.

In Friday’s game, William Wallinder (drafted in the second round in 2020) and Marco Kasper  (first round, 2022) scored their first AHL goals, both in the second period. Michael Hutchinson, in Grand Rapids on a pro tryout, stopped 35 shots in goal.

In Saturday’s contest, Sebastian Cossa (first round, 2021) stopped 31 shots, while Cross Hanas (second round, 2020) scored his first goal of the season. It was the first time this season the Griffins allowed fewer than 40 shots on goal.

The Griffins played the Eagles twice at home last weekend to start the season and finished the season series with the sweep at Colorado.

While the players were off Sunday, Griffins announcer Bob Kaser was back at work, filling in for Red Wings announcer Ken Kal for the team’s game with Calgary. Kal underwent surgery after returning from Ottawa on Saturday. He is expected to be out for a week or more.

A Return Stint

Kaser is in his 24th season calling games for the Griffins. He also has served as a Griffins vice president and president of the team’s youth foundation.

He last filled in for Kal in the 2016-17 season. That season, he did 13 radio broadcasts and one TV broadcast for the Red Wings.

In addition to Sunday’s broadcast, Kaser will call Red Wings home games against Seattle on Tuesday and Winnipeg Thursday and a road game at Boston on Saturday. Kal could return as soon as Oct. 30, when the Red Wings are on the road against the New York Islanders.

The Griffins, 2-2 on the season, return to the ice on Friday with a home game against Cleveland.

One of the Detroit Red Wings’ offseason objectives was to make sure their Grand Rapids Griffins American Hockey League affiliate has the goaltending necessary to create a competitive environment for their top prospects.

Veteran Michael Hutchinson showed Friday the Red Wings are on the right track.

Hutchinson made 40 saves to help the Griffins win their season opener 3-2 over the Colorado Eagles. He will share the net with Red Wings first-round pick Sebastian Cossa. Last season, inconsistency in the net was an issue for the Griffins until Alex Nedeljkovic brought stability to the position.

The Red Wings have three veteran goalies in Detroit (Ville Husso, James Reimer and Alex Lyon). Although the Red Wings never said for sure, the original plan seemed to be Lyon playing in Grand Rapids as the No. 3 goalie. But the Red Wings were concerned that Lyon would be claimed when he went through waivers. That’s why they asked Hutchinson to sign a tryout contract.

The visiting Eagles led 2-1 after two periods, but Taro Hirose tied it for the Griffins just seven seconds into the third and scored the game-winner midway through the period.

Colorado couldn’t take advantage of a slow start by the Griffins despite outshooting them 18-4 in the first period. Despite that, Austin Czarnik gave the Griffins a 1-0 lead at the 13:18 mark with assists from Hirose and Simon Edvinsson.

Griffins Rally in Third Period

Colorado took the lead on a power-play goal midway through the second period. Hirose tied it early in the third with assists from Albert Johansson and Czarnik. The Griffins then got the game-winner on the power play at 11:35 with assists from Jonatan Berggren and Elmer Soderblom.

The Griffins were outshot by the Eagles 42-25. Edvinsson had four shots to lead Grand Rapids. Hirose, Hutchinson and Czarnik were the three stars for the Griffins.

It was the first-ever meeting between the teams, who will play for the second time this season tonight in Grand Rapids. They’ll finish the season series with two games at Colorado next weekend.

This and That

Four of the five Swedish prospects (Edvinsson, Johansson, Berggren and Soderblom) got on the scoresheet for the Griffins. Only William Wallinder was held without a point. … It was Johansson’s 200th game for Grand Rapids, while Czarnik notched his 200th assist as a Griffin. … It was the first game for Grand Rapids coach Dan Watson and his coaching staff. It’s the first season in 20 years the Griffins have begun the season with an entirely new coaching staff.

The Detroit Red Wings have a young center playing above his years. The surprise: It’s Nate Danielson, not Marco Kasper.

Kasper was one of 14 players trimmed from Detroit’s roster today as the Red Wings prepared to play the final preseason game Saturday at home against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Prospects Alexandre Doucet, Marco Kasper and Amadeus Lombardi, defensemen Albert Johansson, Antti Tuomisto, Eemil Viro and William Wallinder, and goaltender Sebastian Cossa were sent to the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins.

Additionally, Red Wings-released forwards Joel L’Esperance, Riley Sawchuk, Dominik Shine and Tyler Spezia, defenseman Josiah Didier, and goaltender Michael Hutchinson are going to the Griffins. Hutchinson was released from his Red Wings’ tryout so he could sign a tryout contract with the Griffins.

Lyon Staying in Detroit

That suggests the Red Wings may keep three goalies — Ville Husso, James Reimer and Alex Lyon. There’s been considerable speculation around the league that Lyon would be claimed on waivers if the Red Wings tried to send him to Grand Rapids.

Meanwhile, Danielson and Simon Edvinsson are among the 37 players the Red Wings (4-2-1 in preseason) still have in camp. That certainly doesn’t mean they have made the team. More cuts are coming before next week’s season opener.

The Kasper decision is not a surprise. Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said recently that Kasper was having difficulty adjusting to the North American pro game.

“It’s just a little different,” Lalonde said. “I think adjusting to North American hockey’s a little bit different. And there’s nothing wrong. It’s a different time and space to where he probably played last year.  I don’t mind, especially for a first year of development. But you can see he has a tendency to want to slow plays down, to want to regroup pucks. The turnover that ended up in the back of our net the other night…  He tried a behind the back through his legs pass to the D for a regroup, which obviously you don’t see very often. That’s a no-no in our league but it’s probably a common play on bigger ice to regroup.

Kasper understands the adjustment issue.

“He has admitted that,” Lalonde said. “Watched a lot of one on one video. I think every game he’s progressively gotten better, which is a good sign, too.”

Have pads will travel could be the motto of Detroit Red Wings goaltending hopeful Michael Hutchinson. A last-minute addition to the training camp roster, the veteran puckstopper is in camp with Detroit on a PTO. The well-traveled netminder could best be described as the NHL version of rent-a-goalie.

“I wasn’t expecting to be in this situation,” Hutchinson admitted. “It’s nice to come to an organization where I was able to get 30 minutes in the other night (against Washington) and get the chance to play some more minutes (Tuesday at Chicago).”

Hutchinson, 33, played the second half of Tuesday’s 4-2 Detroit loss to the Blackhawks at the United Center. Among his 17 saves, he was stopping 2023 NHL first overall pick Connor Bedard on a breakaway chance.

There’s perhaps no more tenuous position to be in during the NHL preseason than to be in camp on a PTO. They are only gettting paid a per diem. No promises are made to the player, other than the opportunity to shine. And even if they do, in the salary cap world, earning a contract is extremely unlikely.

“It just doesn’t happen that often,” Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde acknowledged. “I think it’s a different landscape now, with the flat cap.”

That being that case, making a case for Hutchinson finding a path to sticking in the Red Wings isn’t all that difficult. In fact, there are a number of avenues that could be opening up to him.

Timing Of Hutchinson Arrival Intriguing

Firstly, there’s the timing of his arrival.

“Just got a call the Monday before camp,” Hutchinson explained. “Didn’t have too much going on. I was actually on the golf course. Getting the itch to go on the ice, so I figured why not come here?”

The Monday before camp was the day after the conclusion of the NHL rookie tournament in Detroit, an event that saw Red Wings top goalie prospect Sebastian Cossa lit up for 13 goals over three games. Did Cossa’s struggles spark the Red Wings to go after some goaltending insurance, in case Cossa isn’t ready for a role as an AHL regular with the Grand Rapids Griffins?

Since that day, other possibilities are developing that could lead to a contract for Hutchinson. Andrei Vasilevskiy, the Vezina and Conn Smythe Trophy-winning goaltender for the Tampa Bay Lightning, will be missing a good chunk of the start of the season after undergoing back surgery. The Lightning will be in the market for netminding help and could target someone like Detroit’s Alex Lyon, should he be sent to AHL Grand Rapids and need to clear NHL waivers.

Were the Red Wings to lose Lyon, Hutchinson would be a guy capable to taking over with the Griffins. On the other hand, if Detroit was opting to keep three goalies on the NHL roster in order to protect against losing Lyon on waivers, they could always do something like signing Hutchinson to a 25-game pro tryout deal with the Griffins to fill the gap. Goaltending depth is vital in today’s NHL.

Hutchinson A True Journeyman

Whatever scenario should develop, it’s a safe bet that Hutchinson will be able to adapt to it smoothly. The Red Wings are his seventh NHL organization since 2018, following Winnipeg, Florida, Colorado, Toronto (twice), Vegas and Columbus.

“He’s been good,” Lalonde said. “He stops pucks. He obviously wasn’t with us coming into camp when we put together our plan and now he’s into his second game, which is good.”

For his part, Hutchinson is ready to roll with whatever the hockey world is intending to aim his way.

“At the end of the day, it’s better to be skating than sitting on your butt,” Hutchinson said. “For myself, it’s an opportunity to come here and get some good skates in, meet some guys and get to see a great organization. You come in with no expectations, so I can enjoy each moment and whatever happens, happens.

“Just keeping it in perspective. I enjoy playing, enjoy coming to the rink and getting on the ice. I come and put in my work and whatever happens is out of my control.”
