The Daily: 3 Red Wings Prospects Invited to USA Hockey’s World Junior Tryouts

It’s been quite the year for Detroit Red Wings prospects Carter Mazur and Shai Buium. First, they help lead the University of Denver to a National Championship. Now they’ll be traveling with fellow prospect Red Savage to Plymouth, Michigan for the USA Hockey World Junior Tryouts.

Slated for July 24 and set to end on the August 3, the tryouts will determine the roster that will represent Team USA in the 2022 World Junior Championships starting August 9th. The tournament is a redo of the one last winter postponed due to COVID-19. These 60 invitees will be jostling for just 23 spots on the final roster.

Savage and Mazur were on the roster in the December iteration of the tournament before it was scuttled. Buium and Mazur certainly have seen their respective profiles rise since winning the National Championship. Both Mazur and Buium were ranked in DHN’s Top 10 Red Wings Prospect List at ninth and 10th respectively.

Red Wings Prospect Cossa and Oil Kings Fall in Memorial Cup Opener

Detroit Red Wings top prospect Sebastian Cossa and his Edmonton Oil Kings were just a period away from a victory. A 78-second window in the third period said otherwise.

In spite of 32 saves, Cossa’s Oil Kings lost a 4-3 decision to the Shawinigan Cataractes in the Memorial Cup opener for Edmonton. The winning goal was a tough one, as a diving Cossa failed to make the save. In a round robin tournament where every game is crucial, that’s a tough one to lose for Edmonton.

It certainly isn’t a death knell, and Cossa was still very good between the pipes, save the last couple he gave up. The tying goal was a long shot from the point that Cossa failed to see through a couple skaters in front of him.

Cossa was outstanding through the WHL playoffs. Now he’ll ready for a quick turnaround against St. John tomorrow.
