Former Detroit Red Wings forward Anthony Mantha, now with the Capitals, will be out indefinitely with a shoulder injury

Last season, Anthony Mantha and Jakub Vrana were linked together by a major trade between the Washington Capitals and Detroit Red Wings.

Today, they are both on the long-term injured reserve after shoulder surgery. On Friday, the Capitals announced that Mantha, 27, had successful surgery. They offered no timetable about his return.

Mantha injured  himself when he missed on an attempted hit along the boards. He was playing on Washington’s second line and had six points in 10 games.

After playing six seasons for Detroit, Mantha was traded to Washington seven months ago. The Capitals gave up Vrana, Richard Panik, a first-round pick and a second-round pick for Mantha.

Vrana instantly became the Red Wings’ most dangerous scorer. But 10 minutes into his first practice this fall, he re-injured a shoulder that had bothered him at the end of last season. He had his surgery a couple of months ago. But there’s also no timetable for his return.

Edmonton: Connor McDavid has scored numerous spectacular goals. But Friday night’s tying goal in a 6-5 come-from-behind victory against  the New York Rangers is one of his best.

Buffalo: Sabres GM Kevyn Adams denied Mathew Tkachuk was in the Calgary Flames offer for Jack Eichel. There’s a lot at play here–if Tkachuk was on the NHL trade table, the deal didn’t go down. Calgary GM Brad Treveling also said Tkachuk wasn’t included in the offer. Calgary must sign Tkachuk to a new contract next summer or risk losing him. Now isn’t the time to make him feel unloved or unwanted. Kevin Weekes of ESPN had the Tkachuk scoop, but a good source confirmed it to us, too. Calgary Hockey Now advanced the story to include Sean Monahan in the talks.

Florida:  Anthony Duclair has found a good fit with the Florida Panthers. They appreciate his abilities.

Detroit: Bob Duff’s solution for the Red Wings: more Yzerman, Less Ken Holland. 

San Jose: The Sharks announced they are sending prize prospect William Eklund back to Sweden. He has four assists in nine games. The Sharks top prospect isn’t taking it well.
