The Daily: Should Lyon Start vs. Bruins?; Will Pens Deal Hellberg?

on

Alex Lyon, Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings haven’t said who will play in their net today against the No. 1-rated Boston Bruins. But Alex Lyon is the likely choice. Coach Derek Lalonde has shown that he likes to reward success and Lyon is coming off a 16-save shutout.

Ville Husso has the only regulation win against the Bruins this season, but he gave up four goals in that game and owned an .867 save percentage. The key to that triumph was a three-goal, third-period outburst by the Red Wings’ offense.

If Lyon gets the start, it’s an important one for him. The Red Wings may be in the midst of rethinking their goaltending perspective. The Husso-James Reimer one-two combination has produced — at best — mixed results. Inconsistency has marked Detroit’s goalie performances since the start of the season. If Lyon can show any level of consistency, he can force a reshuffle.

What the Red Wings like most about Lyon is his team-first attitude and his unflappability. Bob Duff’s story on Alex Lyon points out that Lalonde tried to reassure him multiple times that he would get his chance, and Lyon told Lalonde not to worry. He’s been in this role before.  He said he would be ready when he got his chance. It turns out he was right.

Speaking of goalies, Pittsburgh Hockey Now’s Dan Kingerski wrote an article about the Pittsburgh Penguins’ possible trading chips and mentioned former Red Wings goalie Magnus Hellberg as a player that teams might want. Hellberg played well for the Penguins in an emergency call-up.

NHL Trade Market: Do Leafs Need Patrick Kane?

Darren Dreger reports that Patrick Kane did meet with the Toronto Maple Leafs recently to see if there’s a possible fit for their team.

TSN’s Chris Johnston reported the Buffalo Sabres, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings and Florida Panthers are in the hunt for the former Hart Trophy winner. Kane’s interest in Detroit presumably stems from the success he had in Chicago when playing on a line with with Alex DeBrincat. Kane also lived in Michigan when he played here as a teenager.
