First power play goals allowed by Detroit in 11 games

Like death and taxes, Detroit Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider was lamenting the inevitability that the club would eventually be surrendering a power-play goal.

“There will be a time obviously where we’re getting one in the back of the net,” Seider said.

That time came during Saturday’s 5-3 win over the Los Angeles Kings. Taking a 5-1 lead into the final frame, Detroit coughed up a pair of third-period power-play markers. It was the first time in 11 games that the Wings were allowing a goal while killing a penalty.

Detroit coach Derek Lalonde wasn’t too perplexed about the goalie interference call on Alex DeBrincat that led to Pierre-Luc Dubois’ PP goal. He was utterly flummoxed, though, by the roughing call against Jeff Petry that wound up produding Dustin Byfield’s power-play tally.

For some unbeknownst reason, Petry was overcome by the urge to punch the helmet off the head of LA forward Adrian Kempe.

“I thought our first penalty was a little unlucky,” Lalonde said. “Our guy (DeBrincat) got pushed into the net, bumped the goalie. That’s fine.

“I thought our second penalty was a little undisciplined. Not only do they get two on the power play, now they’ve got life. We didn’t manage.

“It was all directed towards those two penalties and them scoring on them.”

Walman Out Of Action

Detroit defenseman Jake Walman didn’t play in Saturday’s win, and won’t be back in action in time for Sunday’s game at Toronto.

“I do not expect Jake to be available,” Lalonde said. “He’s battling some illness here.”

Defenseman Brogan Rafferty got a recall from the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins, offering the Wings some insurance along the blueline. He wasn’t suiting up Saturday, though.
