The captain is back for the Detroit Red Wings. Dylan Larkin is in the lineup for Thursday’s huge game against the New York Islanders. He’s at center between Lucas Raymond and David Perron.

The status of Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin remained up in the air as the clock was ticking toward tonight’s 7 p.m. puck drop against the New York Islanders at Little Caesars Arena. He’d missed the past seven games with a lower-body injury.

Larkin took part in Thursday’s morning skate. Afterward, Detroit coach Derek Lalonde was noting that Larkin will be put through a battery of tests throughout the day Thursday to determine his status. Clearly, he wound up passing those tests with flying colors.

“Dylan is going to be a post morning skate eval,” Lalonde said earlier in the day. “He’s got some testing to do on how he responded to yesterday’s practice and the skate. So we won’t know probably until this afternoon, but the positive is he’s very close.

“I don’t know if it’ll be tonight but he’s getting really close.”

Red Wings Missing Their Captain

Larkin was hurt late in a 4-0 loss to the Florida Panthers on March 2. That game was Detroit’s second loss in a row. The Red Wings would go on to lose another four in a row without their captain. But they’ve won two of the past three games and currently are clinging to the second Eastern Conference wild card playoff spot. Detroit is one point ahead of the Washington Capitals and three points clear of the Islanders.

Detroit is again without defenseman Jake Walman (lower-body injury). That means rookie Simon Edvinsson will be playing his second consecutive game on the Red Wings defense.

Lalonde believes that being thrust into a key role during an NHL playoff race is only going to cause a growth spurt in Edvinsson’s development as a player.

“There’s more to it, there’s more intensity to it, there’s more pressure to it,” Lalonde said. “Obviously with Walman out he’s in a top-four role. This is a positive.

“He performed very well the other day. Now we’ll look for some consistency in that performance.”

James Reimer will be making his second straight start in goal. Reimer is 5-1 over his last six decisions. He’s 8-3-2 with a .914 save percentage and 2.81 goals-against average in 16 career appearances facing the Islanders.

Discussing what it’s going to take for his team to qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs on Friday afternoon, Detroit Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman was outlining their blueprint for success.

“We gotta be better defensively collectively as a team.” Yzerman explained. “We gotta keep working on that. And that includes not just defending. It’s your play with the puck all over the ice. You gotta be responsible with it.

“That’ll be I think the determining factor.”

Later Friday, as they were on the road facing the Arizona Coyotes, the Red Wings appeared to make a conscious decision to completely ignore this blueprint.

Not suprisingly, the outcome wasn’t successful for the Wings.

Scoring three times in the first period, the Coyotes would carry on to blank the Red Wings 4-0.

“Awful start,” Detroit coach Derek Lalaonde told Bally Sports Detroit. “Tough to explain. It’s just really disappointing to have a start like that.”

Arizona would net two goals before Detroit would count a shot on goal. The Coyotes were completely dominant, while the Wings were utterly docile. The Red Wings have now lost four games in a row. Their lead over the New York Islanders for the final Eastern Conference wild card spot has dwindled to two points.

Red Wings Giving Up Easy Chances

“We’re finding ourselves behind, we’re finding ourselves giving up easy chances, giving up leads,” detroit defenseman Jake Walman said. “We just gotta stay dialed in all the time.”

Too often during their dismal opening frame, the Red Wings were dialing the wrong number.

“We just lost some battles,” Lalonde said. “The first goal was really disappointing. We got outskated to the net and then the puck’s lying at the net and all the sudden it’s 1-0.

“I don’t like the penalty kill goal. (A) too many men on the ice (penalty to Detroit), minor hockey type stuff. You’re waiting for your guy to come back to the bench and he plays the puck and you’re not even watching the play.

“It’s the third time it’s happened in a week. It’s not being ready, not being locked in.”

This was a game the Wings could ill afford to lose. Arizona came into the night losers of six in a row at home since Jan. 24. The Coyotes had lost the last five of those games all by margins of 3+ goals. They were also playing the second game of back to backs.

Instead, the Red Wings gave the game away. Starting goalie Alex Lyon allowed 4+ goals for the fourth straight game. James Reimer will be getting the start Saturday in Vegas, where the reigning Stanley Cup champion Golden Knights have lost five in a row at home.

Playing their second game in a row without captain Dylan Larkin (lower-body injury), Detroit dropped to 2-8 over the past two seasons when Larkin isn’t in the lineup. Forward Jonatan Berggren is getting a recall from AHL Grand Rapids and will be playing Saturday in Vegas.

No one has to spell out for the Detroit Red Wings how ugly things got as Saturday’s 4-0 loss to the Florida Panthers continued.

“Florida was a real eye opener and good test for us,” Detroit defenseman Jake Walman said.

The Red Wings have lost two in a row – one to the Panthers, who lead the NHL standings and one to the New York Islanders, who are seeking to hunt down the Red Wings for an Eastern Conference wild card.

Detroit also recently was starting a four-game Western Canadian swing with back-to-back losses to Edmonton and Vancouver. But the Red Wings would rebound to defeat Calgary and Seattle and go 2-2 on the trip.

They launch another four-game trek on Wednesday and it starts out with a significant level of difficulty. The Wings are playing at Colorado. In their last six road games facing the Avalanche, Detroit is 0-6 and has been outscored 31-14.

“Yeah, they’re good,” Walman said. “Obviously you’re facing a really deep team. They’ve won a Cup and that group of guys is still hungry as ever.

“I think it’s a good test for us. It’ll be another big game.”

Larkin Absence Additional Obstacle To Red Wings Rebound

It will also be a game the Red Wings will be going into minus captain and leading scorer Dylan Larkin. He’s out at least two weeks due to a lower-body injury.

These are the bumps,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “The margin for error obviously is much thinner playing these type of teams. Maybe even more so with our leading scorer out.

“If you want to stay in that battle, get over the line, you got to fight through some of these things, and this is our opportunity on this road trip.”

Red Wings Have Proven Their Resiliency

You have to go back to a four-game slide from Dec. 14-20 to locate the Red Wings losing more than two in succession. It is worthy of noting that they were without Larkin for the first two of those four setbacks. They are 2-6 without their captain in the lineup over the past two seasons.

“I think we have a resilient group,” Walman said. “You can’t be in these lulls for too long. You gotta get right back at it and try and turn the page.

It’s not going to get any easier, obviously. It’s only going to get harder down the stretch. If you want to be in the conversation at the end, then these are the games we gotta be a part of.

When it comes to keeping that conversation going, Lalonde says it’s going to be about what they do, and not about what the other team might do to them.

“I think it’s more about us and playing our game correctly no matter who you play,” Lalonde said. “I think everyone’s got to go a little bit more. I think they understand the task.

“We’re going to be battling. Our message to the guys, all along if we were ever going to stay in this fight, stay in this battle right until the end, everything is going to be difficult.”

Detroit hasn't lost three in a row since early December

Last month, when the Detroit Red Wings were coming off a setback at Carolina, goaltender Alex Lyon was stressing that good teams don’t allow losses to accumulate in succession.

“You can’t let those little snowballs start rolling down the hill,” Lyon said.

They say that things come in threes and that’s certainly not an axiom in which the Red Wings are going to want to be investing. Things are in danger of snowballing for them. Heading to Calgary for a Saturday afternoon (4 p.m. ET) date with the Flames, Detroit is off to an 0-2 start on the club’s four-game road trip.

It’s been 21 games since the Red Wings lost three in a row. In fact, they endured a four-game skid from Dec. 7-11. The team has only lost three in a row in regulation twice all season. That, as much as any reason, is why they find themselves currently residing in a playoff position.

However, if they want to maintain possession of that real estate, they need to start winning again and soon.

Like today, for instance.

“One thing I like about this group, we usually take it pretty personally and we like to respond,” forward Christian Fischer was telling Bally Sports Detroit following Thursday’s 4-1 loss at Vancouver. “We’ve done that over the whole course.”

That setback came on the heels of an 8-4 pounding at Edmonton which opened this four-game away sojourn.

Red Wings Must Get Back To Identity

During a 9-2-2 run in January, the Red Wings were playing a solid, defensively responsible brand of hockey. This is the first time since Dec. 29-31 that Detroit has surrendered 4+ goals in successive games.

Getting back to who they were is the recipe the Red Wings need to succeed.

“I think most of our wins need to come from the identity that we showed all January,” forward David Perron said. “We gotta get back at it.”

Clinging to the second Wild Card playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, Detroit is two points ahead of New Jersey and three in front of the New York Islanders. All three clubs are sitting on 53 games played.

Defenseman Jake Walman believes the team can draw strength at times like this from the club’s veteran leadership.

“The belief comes from our room for sure and comes up top,” Walman said. “We got a great group of leaders and guys that have done it before.

“If you don’t know anything, you just gotta listen to those guys. Like DP, Larks, guys that have been there before in those games. Learn from them. I think they bring confidence to the group.”

Recent Success Against Calgary

Detroit has won three in a row over the Flames, including a 5-2 verdict last season at Calgary.

“These next two games are huge on this trip to see if we can come out .500,” Fischer said. “We know exactly where we’re at in this fight. We’re gonna need every point.”

Certainly, there’s no cause for panic.

“There’s a lot of hockey to be played,” captain Dylan Larkin said.

At the same time, nipping this slide in the bud must be a priority. And getting back to who they are as a team is how the Red Wings will get that done.

“We feel in this room that there’s no secret to the position we’re in and it’s our team identity,” Larkin said. “It’s playing with intensity, sticking together and doing it by committee with our depth, three goalies, all of our defensemen playing.

“We feel we’re exactly where we belong.”

If they want to stay there, the Red Wings must get back to their winning ways. And soon.

League actually celebrating Walman's celebratory dance

Relax, Detroit Red Wings fans. The Griddy of Red Wings defenseman Jake Walman isn’t becoming a victim of cancel culture.

You may have seen a published report suggesting that the NHL is cracking down on goal celebrations by players and that Walman’s delightful Griddy is going to go the way of the maskless netminder.

It’s not. The league isn’t canceling the Griddy. In fact, if you’ve been paying attention, they are celebrating it.

When Walman beat Vancouver Canucks goalie Casey DeSmith on a penalty shot in Saturday’s 4-3 win by Detroit at Little Ceasars Arena, the NHL highlighted the entire moment – including the post-goal Griddy – on the league’s official social media account.

Friedman Report Taken Out Of Context

This entire rumor about cancel culture claiming the Griddy as a victim originates from something Hockey Night In Canada NHL insider Elliotte Frieman suggested during his popular 32 Thoughts podcast with co-host Jeff Marek. It was during a segment relating to the recent suspension of Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly.

Rielly was handed a five-game sitdown by the NHL Department of Player Safety. He cross-checked Ottawa’s Ridly Greig in the face after the latter fired a slapshot in an empty Toronto net to clinch a Senators victory.

Friedman noted that he wouldn’t be surprised if the league had spoken to the Red Wings and Canucks regarding any possibility retaliation by the Canucks over Saturday’s celebration by Walman. Considering what transpired in Toronto, that would make sense. It’s a proactive move to ensure that there won’t be any shenanigans.

What Friedman didn’t say, and what that league isn’t doing, is putting a stop to the Griddy. And why would they?

It’s entertaining moment. Walman isn’t taunting the opposition. He’s merely joyously celebrating a huge goal for his team. Remember, he’s only done the Griddy three times. There was last season following his OT winner at Pittsburgh. He also pulled it out earlier season after scoring in OT at Montreal.

“I hadn’t done it at home,” Walman said after Saturday’s win. “It’s cool.

“Anytime I can kind of show the fans what they want, I’m gonna do that. It was fun.”

Walman Will Griddy For Charity

Moving forward, Walman is intending to griddy for a good cause.

“In the next month I’m rolling out some initiative with that logo and the Griddy,” Walman explained. “It’ll benefit the boys and girls clubs in Detroit. All the proceeds are gonna go to that. It’ll be for a good cause.”

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jake Walman was putting on a display of some nifty moves in beating Vancouver Canucks goalie Casey DeSmith with an overtime winner Saturday on a penalty shot to give Detroit a 4-3 victory.

Walman couldn’t recollect if he’d ever taken a penalty shot previously during his hockey career.

“I had a breakaway in Toronto but I don’t remember a penalty shot, no,” Walman said, admitting to pre-shot jitters. “My legs were shaking a little bit.”

As impressive as his finish was, Walman didn’t do anything to convince coach Derek Lalonde that his name should be on the list the next time that the Red Wings are participating in a game-deciding shootout.

“We’ve got a pretty deep group in that,” Lalonde said. “He won’t find himself in the top five.”

Milestones For Kane, Perron

Only one player selected in the 2007 NHL entry draft has played 1200 NHL games. And only one other player from that draft class has played 1100 NHL games.

They were both on the same forward line in Saturday’s game.

Patrick Kane, playing his 1200th game and David Perron, playing his 1100th game, flanked J.T. Compher on Detroit’s second forward unit.

“It’s awesome,” Perron said. “Every milestone is special for sure. And to do it with him. I’ve played so many years against him.

“Even playing on his line, it’s almost surreal for me.”

Red Wings Lalonde Unhappy With Miscue

For the second straight game, the Red Wings were victimized for a goal scored by an opposing player coming out of the penalty box. To say that Lalonde was miffed about this would be an understatement. He made no effort to hide his disappointment in Moritz Seider and Ben Chiarot, the defenseman on the ice for the goal scored by former Red Wings defenseman Filip Hronek.

“It’s minor hockey,” Lalonde said. “The goalie’s slapping his stick, you read it and get off the line and don’t give them a freebie.

“The last D comes off the line and gets out in front of them no matter where the play is. We actually had our forward change properly to have two D on the ice and for both of those guys to lean in to the tops of the circles it’s unacceptable. That’s a detail you can’t have happen.”

Raymond Okay After Cheap Shot

Detroit forward Lucas Raymond was able to return to action after being laid out with a head shot from Canucks defenseman Nikita Zadorov. The Vancouver was the recipient of a match penalty for his actions.

“I don’t like that hit,” Lalonde said. “That’s the classic blindside that the league has been trying to get out of the league for an awful long time.

“I’m glad he’s good. Obviously a good sign that he came back.”

Late Saturday, the NHL issued a two-game suspension to Zadorov.

Ice Chips

The point streak of Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin came to a halt at 12 games . . . On his return to Detroit, Hronek was figuring in all three Vancouver goals with a goal and two assists. “I would rather take a win,” Hronek said. “It would be more fun.”

Detroit wins for seventh time when trailing after two periods

Head coach Derek Lalonde doesn’t like it that his Detroit Red Wings keep digging themselves into holes. On the other hand, he sure admires the spade work they are displaying in climbing out of those holes.

“It always comes from the room,” Lalonde was saying following Saturday afternon’s comeback from a 3-1 third-period deficit for a 4-3 overtime decision against the Vancouver Canucks. “It’s good on the group but not a recipe for success. You don’t want to continue to put yourself in those situations, especially against elite teams like this.”

This season, when it comes to donning rally caps, no team makes it look like a better fit than the Red Wings.

The Red Wings are now 7-13-2 this season when trailing after two period. The 16 points they’ve garnered from that scenario is the best among the 32 NHL teams.

That they’ve been able to do it so many times this season offers a feeling of fortitude within the club that they can come back and do it again.

“You just gotta stick with it,” Red Wings forward David Perron said. “You play in the moment. You don’t worry about it at the time. You worry about getting the second goal.

“Once we got that, we knew we would have a shot at it. And we did it.”

Red Wings Finding Ways To Win

Detroit tied it when Jake Walman’s point shot banked in off of Red Wings forward Michael Rasumssen. Then defenseman Walman won it in of all manners by scoring on a penalty shot. Walman was awarded the free shot after being slashed by Vancouver defenseman Quinn Hughes while on a breakaway in overtime.

“Overtime is kind of capitalizing on chances and breakdowns,” Walman explained. “We’re kind of learning from our other overtimes. I think it’s important to kind of take those 50-50 chances.”

On the subject of making the most of their chances, the Red Wings keep unearthing methods to continue their successful run. Since the beginning of January, Detroit is 10-2-2.

There’s an old saying that good teams find ways to win, while bad teams find ways to lose. In recent seasons, the Red Wings always seem to take up residence in the lattter category.

This season, there’s a new look to Red Wings outcomes.

“We win in different ways,” Perron said. “That’s what’s so special about us. As our details keep getting better and better every single game, as we understand how important every puck is in the D zone.

“That stuff, playing the right way, we’re going keep getting better and better. That’s what’s really exciting about our team.”

One man’s misfortune is another man’s opportunity and in the case of the Detroit Red Wings, the benefactor will be Klim Kostin.

Detroit will be activating Kostin from IR and inserting him into the lineup for Wednesday’s road game against the Florida Panthers. He’ll be replacing the injured Patrick Kane (lower-body).

“Klim coming off IR, he’ll slide right in,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “Probably won’t have a lot of different looks with the lines. Obviously that (Dylan) Larkin line (wth Lucas Raymond and David Perron) has some chemistry, playing very well of late, as has the (Andrew) Copp line (with Michael Rasmussen and Christian Fischer).

“We have some depth. Put Klim in and go from there. Probably similar 12 and 6 to what we saw the other day.”

Kostin has missed the past 12 games due to an upper-body injury.

Lalonde is considering using both Robby Fabbri and Daniel Sprong alongside J.T. Compher and Alex DeBrincat in the spot left vacant by Kane’s injury.

“Both those guys have hot sticks right now, so I like where we can go with that,” Lalonde said.

Red Wings Walman Still Ailing

Defenseman Jake Walman, who performs in the top pairing alongside Moritz Seider, remains under the weather. He’ll be missing his third successive game on Wednesday.

“Jake Walman is still ill,” Lalonde said. “He won’t be available (Wednesday) but we’re hoping he’ll be able to go for Carolina (on Friday).”

Husso Back On The Ice

Another long-term absentee, goaltender Ville Husso hasn’t been seen in action since suffering a lower-body injury Dec. 18 against the Anaheim Ducks. Husso was back on the ice at practice on Tuesday. However, Lalonde was cautioning that the road ahead for the Detroit netminder remains long.

“Ville is probably still in that week to week range but obviously it’s a good sign that he’s able to take some reps here,” Lalonde said. “It’s a matter of him getting more strength to his lower body before he sees some action.”

Ice Chips

Sunday’s Red Wings game against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Little Caesars Arena has undergone a starting time change. The puck will now drop at 7 p.m. ET, instead of the originally-scheduled 5 p.m. The move was made so as not to clash with the 3 p.m. kickoff at Ford Field for the NFL Playoff game between the Detroit Lions and Tampa Bay Buccaneers . . . The Red Wings and the Toledo Walleye of the ECHL are extending their affiliate agreement for another three years.

First power play goals allowed by Detroit in 11 games

Like death and taxes, Detroit Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider was lamenting the inevitability that the club would eventually be surrendering a power-play goal.

“There will be a time obviously where we’re getting one in the back of the net,” Seider said.

That time came during Saturday’s 5-3 win over the Los Angeles Kings. Taking a 5-1 lead into the final frame, Detroit coughed up a pair of third-period power-play markers. It was the first time in 11 games that the Wings were allowing a goal while killing a penalty.

Detroit coach Derek Lalonde wasn’t too perplexed about the goalie interference call on Alex DeBrincat that led to Pierre-Luc Dubois’ PP goal. He was utterly flummoxed, though, by the roughing call against Jeff Petry that wound up produding Dustin Byfield’s power-play tally.

For some unbeknownst reason, Petry was overcome by the urge to punch the helmet off the head of LA forward Adrian Kempe.

“I thought our first penalty was a little unlucky,” Lalonde said. “Our guy (DeBrincat) got pushed into the net, bumped the goalie. That’s fine.

“I thought our second penalty was a little undisciplined. Not only do they get two on the power play, now they’ve got life. We didn’t manage.

“It was all directed towards those two penalties and them scoring on them.”

Walman Out Of Action

Detroit defenseman Jake Walman didn’t play in Saturday’s win, and won’t be back in action in time for Sunday’s game at Toronto.

“I do not expect Jake to be available,” Lalonde said. “He’s battling some illness here.”

Defenseman Brogan Rafferty got a recall from the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins, offering the Wings some insurance along the blueline. He wasn’t suiting up Saturday, though.

The Detroit Red Wings may have to face the Edmonton Oilers Thursday without defenseman Jake Walman who came down with an illness today.

“A little under the weather,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “Came in today and we sent him straight home. We’ll get a better feel tomorrow on where (Walman) is.”

The Oilers beat the Chicago Blackhawks 2-1 Tuesday for their eighth consecutive win. They’ve won 16 of their last 19 games.

In other injury news, Lalonde said Klim Kostin is close to returning from his undisclosed injury.

“He had a full practice today,” Lalonde said. “I don’t foresee us using him tomorrow. We’ll see how he progresses. Another full practice Friday. Would like to get him in on the weekend. Big body. It’s amazing when you don’t have it for a few weeks, we missed him little bit. So we’d like to get him in on the weekend. We’ll see how he progresses the rest of this week.”

Lindstrom On The Move

The Anaheim Ducks claimed former Red Wings player Gustav Lindstrom off waivers from the Montreal Canadiens.  The Red Wings traded him to Montreal in the Jeff Petry deal.

In Anaheim, Lindstrom will be reunited with Ducks GM Pat Verbeek who knows Lindstrom’s game well from their time together in Detroit. Lindstrom has been a serviceable defenseman in limited playing time this season. He has three goals and shows an even plus-minute in 14 games. He averaged 15+ minutes per game.

Lindstrom is a right-shot D man and the Ducks just traded right-shot defenseman. After the defensive  reshuffling, Lindstrom might receive the opportunity to play on the Ducks’ third pairing.

Lalonde said goalie James Reimer will likely play one of the back-to-back games on Saturday (home vs. Los Angeles Kings) or Sunday (at Toronto)…Goalie Ville Husso is not close to returning to the lineup. He has been skating. “But not going down into a butterfly yet,” Lalonde said. “Just some basic footwork. Simple steps Still probably week-to-week range.”… Key Red Wings prospect Jonatan Berggren (23 points in 22 games for Grand Rapids) and defenseman Simon Edvinsson (19 points in 29 games) were named to play in the American Hockey League All-Star Classic  in San Jose Feb. 4-5.
