Swedish Media Report: Edvinsson’s Surgery ‘Went Great’

The Swedish Media outlet SportExpressen reported this week Detroit Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson’s shoulder surgery was completed without complications earlier this week.

“The operation, which was done in (Vail) Colorado, went great and Simon is back in Detroit and starting the rehabilitation,” Edvinsson’s agent, Peter Werner, at CAA Sports in Stockholm, told SportExpressen columnist Gunnar Nordstrom.

The Red Wings said the recovery process is approximately four to six months. That’s roughly 124 to 186 days. NHL training camp in Traverse City probably will start around Sept.20-21. That’s 138 days from today.

The best-case scenario puts him medically cleared near training camp or before the start of the season. The worst case scenario is he returns to action early in November.

The surgery was recommended, according to Nordstrom, because Red Wings doctors found indications Edvinsson could have problems in the future.

“The operation took place for preventive purposes,” Werner told Nordstrom.”Simon has not been troubled by the shoulder this season.”

Played Nine Games for Detroit

Edvinsson played impressively in his nine-game tryout with the Red Wings late in the season. He scored his first two NHL goals.

“I think he’s a dynamic player,” Detroit captain Dylan Larkin said. “It’s not every day you see a 6-foot-6 player move like that and have vision and skating ability like that. He’s a very exciting prospect. He really understood that he was there to leave an impression and a good impression.”

The Red Wings expect Edvinsson to play with Detroit in the upcoming season, but it remains unclear whether it will be opening night. Another Swedish prospect, Albert Johansson, also played well for the Grand Rapids Griffins this season and could also make the Detroit defense this season.
