Red Wings Prospect Edvinsson A Scratch As Frolunda Advances in SHL Playoffs
Thursday was a good news, bad news day for Detroit Red Wings prospects in European hockey playoff action.
Frolunda HC was completing a stunning sweep of the defensing Swedish Hockey League champion Vaxjo Lakers via a 5-2 victory. However, from a Red Wings point of view, overshadowing that news was the absence from the Frolunda lneup of defenseman Simon Edvinsson. Detroit’s top pick (fourth overall) in the 2021 NHL entry draft was a scratch for undisclosed reasons.
Edvinsson posted two assists and was plus-4 through the first three games of the series. He is averaging more than 21 minutes per game in ice time during the postseason. However, it now seems noteworthy that during Game 3 – an overtime affair – Simon Edvinsson was limited to 17:31 time on ice. The last time he was seeing that little ice time in a game was Feb. 27.

Perhaps he suffered an injury in that game that limited his performance and with a 3-0 series lead, the decision was made to give him a Game 4 rest. No one can say for certain because in the playoffs, injury details are guarded as if they were state secrets.
During the game, Red Wings forward prospect Elmer Soderblom (159th overall, 2019 NHL entry draft) scored his second goal of the postseason. He’s accounted for 2-2-4 totals during the series sweep. During Game 3, forward Theodor Niederbach (51st overall, 2020) stepped up, delivering a pair of assists from just 9:27 of ice time.
Wallinder, Johansson Still Seeking First Playoff Point
Defenseman William Wallinder (35th overall, 2020 and Albert Johansson (60th overall, 2019) are still embroiled in opening-round SHL playoff action.
Johansson’s Färjestad own a 3-1 series lead over Skellefteå. He’s without a point through four games. However, Game 4 saw him playing a series-high 19 minutes of ice time.
Wallinder’s Rogle are finding themselves in a 2-2 deadlock with Oskarshamn. Wallinder is also pointless in the series. He’s skating on average over 18 minutes per game.
Red Wings Prospect Viro Advancing in Sm-liiga Postseason
In Finland’s SM-liiga quarterfinals, defenseman Eemil Viro (70th overall, 2020) and TPS Turku were moving on following a 3-1 Game 7 victory over HIFK Helsinki in in their quarterfinal series.
