Sebastian Cossa was runner-up for WHL goalie of the year.

Not so long ago, the prospect cupboard was relatively bare when it came to the Detroit Red Wings and goaltenders. The good news today is that things are looking up for Detroit.

At the age of 26, current Red Wings No. 1 goalie Alex Nedeljkovic is just entering the prime of his NHL career. Beyond him, the prospect pipeline is headed up by Sebastian Cossa. The 2021 first-round draft pick is enjoying another banner season with the Edmonton Oil Kings of the WHL.

Let’s look at the top five goaltending prospects currently in the Red Wings system.

1. Sebastian Cossa (No. 15, 2021)

Cossa was a finalist for the WHL Goaltender of the Year Award. He currently has backstopped the Edmonton Oil Kings to within two victories of going to the 2022 Memorial Cup tournament following Tuesday’s 4-0 victory at Seattle.

Sebastian Cossa finished third in the WHL with 33 wins. His six shutouts were good for second in the league, while Cossa’s 2.28 goals-against average also placed him second in the WHL.

2. Victor Brattstrom (No. 160, 2018)

In his first pro season in North America, Victor Brattstrom was thrust into the starting role with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins following a season-ending injury to Calvin Pickard. His 32 games tied for the fourth-most ever played by a GR rookie goalie.

Brattstrom finished the season 11-16-3 with a 3.32 GAA and .894 save percentage. He was recalled from the Griffins to the Red Wings, dressing as Nedeljkovic’s backup for a March 30 game against the New York Rangers.

3. Jan Bednar (No. 107, 2020)

Bednar earned selection to play for the Czech Republic in the past two World Junior Tournaments. Playing in the QMJHL for the Acadie-Bathurst Titan, Bednar’s 28 wins were second in the league. His 2.72 GAA rated 10th in the QMJHL.

4. Joren Van Pottelberghe (No. 110, 2015)

The Swiss netminder played a career-high 44 games for Biel-Bienne EHC of the Swiss National League. Van Pottelberghe posted a 24-12-3 record with a 2.44 GAA and five shutouts. He also played one game for Switzerland in the Deutschland Cup.

5. Carter Gylander (No. 191, 2019)

During his sophomore season with the Colgate Red Raiders (ECAC), Gylander shared netminding duties. In 16 appearances, he was 7-8-0 with a 2.76 GAA and a .908 save percentage.
