The Daily: Lundkvist Deal Sets Up Rangers For Patrick Kane Sweepstakes

Patrick Kane, chicago blackhawks

Chicago Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson said neither Patrick Kane or Jonathan Toews have asked for a trade. And the Blackhawks aren’t currently trying to peddle them.

At least not yet.

Both Kane and Toews will be unrestricted free agents next summer and the Blackhawks are rebuilding. It would be irresponsible not to trade them at some point.

And when that happens, the New York Rangers will be in a position to be one of the favorites to land Kane. They are in that spot because they picked up another first-round pick from the Dallas Stars by sending them disgruntled prospect Nils Lundkvist. The young Swedish defenseman wanted out of New York because the Rangers have a good collection of younger defensemen ahead of him on the depth chart. He will get an opportunity to play in Dallas.

Hall of Fame hockey columnist Larry Brooks of the New York Post explains why the Rangers are in good shape to pursue Kane. If you recall, Kane and Artemi Panarin had noteworthy chemistry when they played together for the Blackhawks
