Red Wings goalie Alex Lyon’s popularity in Detroit may not yet rival the Detroit Lions’ approval rating, but it seems to rise daily.

Bob Duff’s story about the Detroit Red Wings‘ 3-2 overtime win against the Florida Panthers spells out how significant his contributions have been to the seven-game points streak. Injured Ville Husso will find a different goalie hierarchy when he returns from injury. If Lyon continues to play this impressively, they aren’t going to reduce his playing time.

Since Lyon took over the net, the Detroit squad has climbed back into the playoff race to the point that they are now in third place in the Atlantic Division. Lyon has played 15 times this season and held opponents to three or less goals in 13 (86.6%) of those appearances.

His level of consistency has given the Red Wings a chance to earn a point in the vast majority of his starts. The Red Wings have given up five or more goals 10 times this season, but Lyon hasn’t given up five goals once this season.

According IcyData.com, Lyon is now in the NHL’s top 15 goals in the category of Goals Saved Above the Average (GSAA) with a +9.23. He’s in the neighborhood of Linus Ullmark (9.63) and Ilya Sorokin (10.4). That’s good company.
