Red Wings Succumb Down Stretch to Rangers, 3-2

NEW YORK — Wednesday was the first full day of Patrick Kane’s tenure with the Red Wings, and there was no lack of buzz about his signing even a day after it became official.

The team had a game, and a big test, later in the evening. They took the ice without Kane, who participated in the morning skate but did not play, and Dylan Larkin, who did not make the trip due to injury.

After the signing was announced, David Perron was asked if the Wings had one too many leaders on the team with the addition of Kane.

“No,” he said. “It’s not just that. He’s a presence. When you play names like that, you look at the lineup and you gotta be aware when those guys when they’re on the ice. It’s all that and more.”

So, with Kane and Larkin out of the lineup, and the streaking New York Rangers on the ice, it might have been understandable if the Red Wings had a slump.

Instead, they put on a strong effort, only to see the Rangers rally in the third period to take a 3-2 victory.

The loss was the first in four games since the team returned from  Sweden.

Detroit came out sluggish. But, buoyed by a strong effort from Ville Husso in net, the Red Wings held off the Rangers in the first period and took over in the second.

Artemi Panarin struck first as the Rangers t0ok advantage of a Red Wings line change t0 beat Husso at 4:37.

Red Wings Goals Come Quickly

Detroit took the lead on consecutive shots midway through the period.

With Panarin in the penalty box, Moritz Seider beat Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin at 8:43. Robby Fabbri did the same 23 seconds later to give the Wings the lead. Andrew Copp assisted on both goals. Fabbri had an assist on Seider’s score and Jonatan Berggren had the second assist on Febbri’s goal.

The Wings led 2-1 until midway through the third period, when K’Andre Miller beat Husso on a slap shot at 9:14 to tie it for the Rangers. Jimmy Vesey w0n it when he batted an airborne puck into the net with 4:15 remaining.

The Wings had a power play in the last 1:56, but couldn’t take advantage.

Husso was stellar in net, but the Rangers were helped by the sheer volume  of shots.
They outshot the Red Wings 41-27.

Red Wings broadcaster Ken Kal also didn’t make the trip.

Larkin isn’t expected to play tonight, when the Red Wings play host to Chicago. Jeff Petry was a healthy scratch f0r the Red Wings.
