Red Wings Don Rally Caps For Another Impressive Comeback Win

Head coach Derek Lalonde doesn’t like it that his Detroit Red Wings keep digging themselves into holes. On the other hand, he sure admires the spade work they are displaying in climbing out of those holes.

“It always comes from the room,” Lalonde was saying following Saturday afternon’s comeback from a 3-1 third-period deficit for a 4-3 overtime decision against the Vancouver Canucks. “It’s good on the group but not a recipe for success. You don’t want to continue to put yourself in those situations, especially against elite teams like this.”

This season, when it comes to donning rally caps, no team makes it look like a better fit than the Red Wings.

The Red Wings are now 7-13-2 this season when trailing after two period. The 16 points they’ve garnered from that scenario is the best among the 32 NHL teams.

That they’ve been able to do it so many times this season offers a feeling of fortitude within the club that they can come back and do it again.

“You just gotta stick with it,” Red Wings forward David Perron said. “You play in the moment. You don’t worry about it at the time. You worry about getting the second goal.

“Once we got that, we knew we would have a shot at it. And we did it.”

Red Wings Finding Ways To Win

Detroit tied it when Jake Walman’s point shot banked in off of Red Wings forward Michael Rasumssen. Then defenseman Walman won it in of all manners by scoring on a penalty shot. Walman was awarded the free shot after being slashed by Vancouver defenseman Quinn Hughes while on a breakaway in overtime.

“Overtime is kind of capitalizing on chances and breakdowns,” Walman explained. “We’re kind of learning from our other overtimes. I think it’s important to kind of take those 50-50 chances.”

On the subject of making the most of their chances, the Red Wings keep unearthing methods to continue their successful run. Since the beginning of January, Detroit is 10-2-2.

There’s an old saying that good teams find ways to win, while bad teams find ways to lose. In recent seasons, the Red Wings always seem to take up residence in the lattter category.

This season, there’s a new look to Red Wings outcomes.

“We win in different ways,” Perron said. “That’s what’s so special about us. As our details keep getting better and better every single game, as we understand how important every puck is in the D zone.

“That stuff, playing the right way, we’re going keep getting better and better. That’s what’s really exciting about our team.”
