The Detroit Red Wings gave Patrick Kane the day off on Wednesday.

“In talking to him, like the rest of our guys, pushing him hard, we thought it was in his best interest with the day today like most of our guys (to take it off),” Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde explained.

That won’t be the case on Thursday.

“He’s going to be available for us tomorrow, will get a full morning skate tomorrow. He’ll be in the lineup.”

Kane, the former Hart, Art Ross, Calder and Conn Smythe Trophy winner will be making his much-awaited Detroit debut as the Red Wings are playing host to the San Jose Sharks (7 p.m. ET) at Little Caesars Arena. Plans are for Kane to skate on a line alongside J.T. Compher and Alex DeBrincat.

“We’ll probably start him with DeBrincat, maybe a couple different centers,” Lalonde said. “Undecided on that.”

Certainly, Kane’s familiarty and success skating as a linemate with DeBrincat in Chicago is making that a natural pairing.

“There’s a comfort level, an excitement for both of them,” Lalonde said.

Lalonde was also confirming that Kane, 34, will be on a clock in terms of his overall ice time.

“We’ll be smart in how we use him,” Lalonde said. “I don’t know if he’s ready for a regular shift. I think we’ll monitor it.

“We’ll probably have a target minute-wise. We’ll get a feel. Obviously, he feels really good, body-wise, but it’s a lot different. It’s just been difficult. He’s joining us at a time where we’ve had a slew of games. We just haven’t been able to practice as much as we’d have probably liked or had previously.”

Red Wings Teammates Excited for Kane Debut

If you’re excited by this news, well, know you’re not alone. There’s a palpable buzz about the Red Wings locker room awaiting to see how Kane looks adorned in the winged wheel jersey.

“He can still score,” goaltender Ville Husso said. “He’s a good player, one of those like superstars. As a goalie you’ve always got to be aware of him. He’s been great in practice.”

Like DeBrincat, defenseman Olli Maatta is another Red Wings player to skate previously with Kane as an NHL teammate.

“I think he is an elite player in this league,” Maatta said. “He’s shown that for many years now. When you play against him, you have to know when he’s on the ice and where he is. There’s only a couple of guys in this league like that.

Even when he’s just practicing, Kane is proving to be a show stopper.

“Everybody, the first couple of practices just stopped just to stare at him with the puck a little bit,” Maatta said. “Most of us grew up watching him play.

“I think you can see in the little while that he’s been here, that he’s just hungry to get back out there. He’s excited to be playing hockey again. I think we’re excited to see him out there. I think it’s just exciting times.

Among their Spotify playlists, it’s doubtful that Detroit Red Wings forward Alex DeBrincat and his new/old teammate Patrick Kane have any Peaches And Herb tunes.

That being the case, it’s ewually likely that the most memorable lyric from the 1970s pop duo’s biggest hit has been streaming non-stop through their minds ever since the news broke that Kane would be signing with the Red Wings.

Reunited, and it feels so good.

“Yeah, it’s exciting,” DeBrincat said. “Obviously, we’ve been friends for a while and have some chemistry on the ice, so it should be fun.”

As linemates in Chicago, DeBrincat was fashioning a pair of 41-goal campaigns. During the 2020-21 season, while DeBrincat was scoring his 41 goals, Kane was bettering him with 44 tallies.

During the 218-19 season, Kane would contribute 10 primary and five secondary assists on DeBrincat goals. The duo really grew to be dynamic as a pair in 2020-21. Among DeBrincat’s 41 goals, Kane was collecting 22 primary and five secondary assists. Meanwhile, DeBrincat was dishing out five primary and seven secondary assists on Kane’s 44 goals.

That season, it was DeBrincat who set up Kane for his 400th NHL goal on a two-on-one break against Detroit. DeBrincat is confident that they can again create that magical connection to the benefit of the Red Wings.

“Maybe it’s not going to click right away but I don’t expect it to take a crazy amount of time,” DeBrincat said. “I think we know who each other are as players, where we like to be.”

DeBrincat Offers Kane Scouting Report

As to what Kane will bring to the ice, DeBrincat offers a ready-made scouting report.

“Just his hockey IQ is pretty high, just off the charts, above a lot of other people,” DeBrincat said. “The way he’s able to slow the game down and make the game come to him, he’s obviously a guy the other team is worried about and is focused on.

“He can draw a couple guys in and move that puck. It’s something that I kind of had to learn to play with. I think he’s not a guy who’s maybe going to make the first play he sees, he’s going to hold onto it and usually something better opens and then he’s moving it.

“It was fun to play with him.”

DeBrincat Keeping Kane In Red Wings Loop

During Kane’s process to select his next NHL team, DeBrincat was a persistent earworm, constantly talking up the Red Wings way to his friend and teammate.

“Just kind of gave him my experience on how the organization is, how we’re treated here, the depth of our team. I feel like we have a really good group here, so just kind of giving him my experiences so far and kind of feeling him out and seeing what he was looking for.”

When Detroit Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde talks about what the team is getting from center J.T. Compher, the descriptive he likes to use is “as advertised.”

“Very good player,” Lalonde said. “Maybe a little more of an increased role of what he probably did throughout his career in Colorado. A very good player in every situation was kind of our vision with him and he’s been very good.”

There were a number of facors about Compher’s game that drew the Red Wings toward him as the ??-year-old was becoming an UFA last summer.

A versatile player, Compher can play all three forward positions. He’s an adept passer of the puck. Compher can be useful on the power play and is adept as a penalty.

“I really appreciated the player when we targeted him.,” Lalonde said. “I was already a big fan. And he has not disappointed.”

With 4-13-17 totals through 20 games for Detroit, if you do the math, goal-wise, Compher is right on pace. He’d finish with 17 at his current pace. Over his final two campaigns with the Avalanche, Compher’s average was 17.5 goals per season.

However, he’s on pace for 54 assists and a career-high 71 points.

Red Wings Appreciate Simplicity Of Compher’s Game

Introduced to Detroit’s top power-play unit three games ago, the group is 5-for-15 during that span. Compher’s been on the ice for all five man-advantage goals. In a 5-2 win at Boston, Compher opened the scoring on the power play and later dished a deft cross-crease pass to captain Dylan Larkin for the power-play marker that iced the game.

“Some puck retrievals, he won some face-offs, made some plays,” Lalonde said of the qualities Compher brings to the power play.

Compher Excited For What Detroit Can Accomplish

Playing for a Stanley Cup winner in Colorado, Compher was learning the value of being versatile.

“Being on a good team like that in Colorado, you had to find a way to be useful, or your weren’t going to be in the lineup,” Compher said. “It’s kind of whatever the coach asks there, I was willing to do and I’m trying to bring that same attitude here.

“Whatever Newsy (Lalonde) and the coaching staff ask is what I’m willing to do. Offensively, defensively I want to be as rock solid as possible and be ready for any situation.”

He was there from the beginning as Colorado was evolving from the NHL’s worst team into a Cup winner. Compher is feeling similar growth steps being made in Detroit, and sees the evidence of that progress emerging during the club’s current three-game win streak.

“I think as a team we’re finding something,” Compher said. “It hasn’t been consistent the whole time, a few growing pains but that’s pretty normal for early in the year.

“These last few games kind of show what we’re capable of, but it’s gotta be consistent every night. That’s what we’ve been talking about.”

The 2023-24 seas0n is nearly two months along, and beginning this week we’ll be keeping tabs on Red Wings prospects in the minors, or juniors, or in college in what we’re calling the Prospect Watch.

It’s not a ranking or assessment of talent, (For now, we’ll leave that to the guys Chris Ilitch is paying to do that) but it will be a snapshot of how prospects fared in the previous week. So the fact that players move up and down on this list is purely our perception, not where we think they rank in the organization.

Sandin Pellikka Off to Fast Start

Axel Sandin Pellikka is off to a blazing start in Sweden, recording his seventh goal in 18 games this season. That’s good for a forward. It’s amazing f0r a defenseman. Sandin Pellikka. the 17th overall pick last summer,  is off to the best start for a teenage defenseman in Sweden in 40 years. Ulf Samuelsson, who was very briefly a Red Wing at the end of his NHL career, had nine goals in 33 games in 1982-83.

Trey Augustine had a big weekend for the red-hot Michigan State hockey team. He was in net for both games as the Spartans (10-3-1) swept top-ranked Wisconsin. Augustine has a GAA of 2.99, a save percentage of . 913 and is 9-3-1 with a shutout while playing in 13 of MSU’s 14 games this season.

Simon Edvinsson has had a solid start even as the Grand Rapids Griffins stumble. The Griffins were swept by the Texas Stars last weekend. Edvinsson had a pair of assists in a 7-4 loss on Saturday. He has three goals in 13 games this season, well ahead of last year’s pace.

Mazur Hot After Return From Injury

Carter Mazur, who missed training camp with an injury suffered in Traverse City two months ago, has five points in seven games so far this season. He has two goals and three assists. That’s the same as Cross Hanas and Amadeus Lombardi, who have played in 13 and 12 games, respectively.

Red Savage is off to a good start at Michigan State after transferring from Miami (Ohio). He has four goals and 14 points in as many games for the Spartans.

Nate Danielson and Emmitt Finnie represented the Western Hockey League at each end of last summer’s draft. Danielson, the No. 9 overall selection, was impressive in training camp before beginning the season with Brandon. He has five goals and 13 points. Finnie, taken in the seventh round at No. 201, has four goals and 13 points for Kamloops.

Red Wings 2023 draftee Jack Phelan (137th overall) was among the 22 players named to the 2023 U.S. Junior Select Team that will compete at the 2023 World Junior A Challenge from December 10-17 in Truro, Nova Scotia. The 19-year-old defenseman is showing 1-4-5 totals with the USHL’s Sioux Falls Stampede.

On the eve of Thanksgiving, perhaps it was only appropriate that the fellow who’d help restore the roar to the Detroit Red Wings would be a Lyon.

Coming home from two heartbreaking losses during the NHL Global Series in Sweden, 3-5-3 over their past 11 games, the Red Wings were seeking out someone who’d give them healing powers. That guy, it turns out, is goalie Alex Lyon.

Making 16 saves, Lyon, the No. 3 goalie on the Detroit depth chart, was blanking the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday at Little Caesars Arena. He’s the first netminder to blank the Devils in 101 games. In six periods for the club, Lyon has kept a clean sheet in five of them.

“I think what Alex has given us the last two games is just really solid goaltending,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “There’s a couple of times we had some D-zone time and he would eat a puck. No rebound, faceoff. And then we’d kind of get a little rhythm back into our game.”

Raymond Carrying Hot Hand

Scoring for a career-high fourth successive game, Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond became the fourth Detroit player 21 years of age or younger to post a goal-scoring streak of that length over the past 40 years.

Raymond is joining Dylan Larkin, Sergei Fedorov and Steve Yzerman in this select group. Raymond has 12 points (7-5-12) in his last 13 games dating back to Oct. 22 against Calgary.

Working Fast

Raymond, captain Larkin and Robby Fabbri scored 1:12 apart during the first period. It marks the fastest three goals Detroit has scored in nearly 14 years. became the fourth different Red Wings player.

Pavel Datsyuk, Tomas Kopecky and Brett Lebda scored 46 seconds apart on March 14, 2009 at St. Louis.

Four x 100 Red Wings

Playing 100 NHL games isnt’a huge milestone in the grand scheme of things. However, having three players skating in their 100th game as Red Wings on the same night is somewhat unusual.

Forwards Andrew Copp and David Perron and defenseman Jake Walman were all suiting up for their 100th games wearing the winged wheel on Wednesday. For Perron, Detroit is his third 100-game club, joining St. Louis (673) and Edmonton (116).

Speaking of 100, Wednesday’s victory was the 100th NHL regular-season win recorded by the Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena.

History Lesson

Wednesday was a memorable day in Red Wings franchise history. On Nov. 22, 1927, Detroit’s NHL franchise – still known at the time as the Cougars – was playing the Ottawa Senators in the first NHL game at Olympia Stadium.

The debut in the old Red Barn didn’t go well. Detroit lost 2-1. Johnny Sheppard would tally the only goal for the home side.

Five Swediish Red Wings draftees are playing with AHL Grand Rapids

While the Detroit Red Wings were playing in Sweden last week as part of the NHL Global Series, they were arriving to Stockholm with more Swedes in the front office than on the ice.

Forward Lucas Raymond was the only Swedish player in the Detroit lineup.

However, to quote Reg Dunlop, erstwhile player/coach of the Charlestown Chiefs, that situation is about to change.

While in Sweden, Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman was talking excitedly about the number of top Swedish prospects currently in the club’s development pipeline.

“We have some young guys who are close to playing in the NHL,” Yzerman told Swedish website Aftonbladet.se. “This year they get a bigger role in Grand Rapids (AHL) to develop a little and play more special teams and have a bigger role.

“They are very young and we expect them to be able to force their way into the team within a year or two.”

At the top of that list certainly is defenseman Simon Edvinsson. The sixth player chosen in the 2021 NHL entry draft is in his second AHL season with the Griffins. He’s fourth on the team in scoring with 3-4-7 totals through 13 games.

“Positive reports from him down there, where he’s starting to get a more complete game,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “There’s less of those egregious mistakes. He’s finding his game, he’s growing the correct way.”

Red Wings Pick Sandin Pellikka Lighting Up SHL

Still in Sweden playing for Skelleftea of the SHL, defenseman Axel Sandin Pellikka, the 17th overall pick of the 2023 draft, already shows seven goals as his tally this season.

“He’s a slightly different player than what we have in our organization,” Yzerman said. “He’s an offensive defenseman who’s good at moving the puck and we don’t really have that type of defenseman.

“It’s only a matter of time before he has a positive impact on the team”

Forwards Jonatan Berggren and Elmer Soderblom and defensemen Albert Johansson and William Wallinder are other Swedish prospects in Grand Rapids.

“Overall, they are good young men who all have a chance to become NHL players,” the Detroit GM said.

Yzerman finds the potential of Johansson to be curiously intriguing. The steady defender is a team-leading plus-four.

“He has started very well this year,” Yzerman said of Johansson. “Now he is injured but he is close to coming back. Based on his play, we want him to play in the NHL at some point to see where he fits in next year.

“He can be a good NHL player, he just has to be healthy and play.”

Considering how well Detroit’s NFL team is performing this season, perhaps it’s wise strategy by Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde to be putting the fate of his team in the capable hands of a Lyon.

Alex Lyon will be starting his second straight game in goal as the Red Wings are facing the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday at Little Caesars Arena.

“We’re going to go with Alex Lyon,” Lalonde said of his starting goalie for Wednesday. It will be the third straight game in which No. 1 goalie Ville Husso is not between the pipes. He didn’t participate in Detroit’s NHL Global Series in Sweden, returning home after his wife gave birth to their first child.

Lyon got his first start of the season in Friday’s 3-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

“I liked what Alex gave us,” Lalonde said. It’s not fair to put Ville in considering this was his first practice in about a week. I liked what Alex gave us. We can build some confidence within the room.”

As a career No. 3 goalie, Lyon is accustomed to the role of not being called upon for long stretches of time.

“Health-wise and physically I feel great,” Lyon said. “I’ve had a lot of time to prepare and continue to try to get better. That’s been my focus and that’s where it’s gonna remain.”

Veleno To Red Wings Top Line

One switch that was evident during practice Tuesday was the decision to move Joe Veleno up to the club’s top forward unit alongside Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond. It’s a climb all the way up the ladder for Veleno. He began the season as Detroit’s fourth-line center.

“Skating,” is the asset Lalonde says Veleno will be bringing to the unit. “He gets north, he makes plays with some pace. He’s been pretty good in most situations, so I just think what he brings, a little more size, a little more north, might be able to give some chances to some guys toward the top of the lineup.”

Walman Good To Go

Defenseman Jake Walman, who left the loss to Toronto after crashing into a goal post, will be suiting up Wednesday.

“I just took a fall – even guys in the NHL fall – and unfortunately it was a pretty hard post that I went into,” Walman said. “Fortunate that it wasn’t something serious. Rattled me but that’s just about it.”

As a precaution, Lalonde was expecting to be going with 11 forwards and seven defensemen for the Devils game.

“I foresee Jake to be good to go,” Lalonde said. “When you go 11 and seven, which we’ve done three times and we’re 3-0 doing it, it gives that natural mix to the lines. A blender, if you will. So I think you’ll see a lot of different combinations.”

Even if it were to turn out that Walman has a set back between now and game time, Lalonde didn’t foresee the club recalling top deensive prospect Simon Edvinsson from AHL Grand Rapids.

“Probably not with seven healthy D,” Lalonde said. “Let him continue to grow his game. We’ve had positive reports from him down there, where he’s starting to get a more complete game. There’s less of those egregious mistakes, he’s finding his game. He’s growing the correct way.”

Raymond gets advice from Detroit Swedish legend

Officially, former captain Henrik Zetterberg is not part of the Detroit Red Wings hockey operations staff. Unofficially, he is helping the team out whenever asked in any way that he can.

One of those ways is serving as a sort of mentor to the lone Swedish player on Detroit’s current roster, forward Lucas Raymond.

“Being able to talk to Zäta in everyday life is very cool,” Raymond told Swedish website Aftonbladet.se, referring to Zetterberg by his Swedish nickname. “He helps me a lot.”

Second on the team in goals with seven after scoring twice during Detroit’s two games played in his homeland, Raymond is one pace for a 34-goal season. His best NHL campaign to date is the 23 goals he scored as a rookie in 2021-22.

While several of his teammates find themselves struggling to put the puck in the back of the net of late, Raymond is rolling on a goal-scoring groove. Along with tallying in each of the past three games, his ledger is showing six goals through the past 10 games.

His Red Wings teammates were happy to see Raymond shining in the spotlight while playing NHL regular-season games in his homeland for the first time.

“One of the coolest things was getting to see Lucas there, having that experience and he played really well, so I was happy for him,” Detroit goalie Alex Lyon said.

Zetterberg Idolized By Raymond

The journey to Sweden was also offering Raymond the chance for some face-to-face time with Zetterberg, who makes his home in the Swedish city of Angelholm.

Initially, he admits, it was somewhat intimidating to approach a Red Wings legend like Zetterberg. But the former Detroit star quickly put his young countryman at ease.

“You get a little nervous at first when you’ve seen him so much on TV and read about him,” Raymond said. “It’s very cool, I grew up with him as an idol.

Now, they communicate regularly and Zetterberg is always willing to lend an ear to help Raymond out.

“We’ve had quite a lot of contact actually,” Raymond said. “He’s been in Detroit quite a bit. I try to talk to him as much as possible. I try to take in as much as possible.”

Monday was an extremely optional practice for the Detroit Red Wings. Since defenseman Jake Walman wasn’t among the participants, his status for Wednesday’s home game against the New Jersey Devils remains uncertain.

Even the Red Wings insist they won’t know much more until after Tuesday’s workout. Walman, who has a history of shoulder issues, left Friday’s loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs with an upper-body injury after crashing into a goal post.

“Wally will be questionable for practice tomorrow and then we’ll see where he’s at for Wednesday,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “The luxury of having seven NHL D, that certainly won’t be an issue.

“We’re in a good spot.”

Numbers-wise, that’s true. Talent-wise is another issue. Walman skates alongside Moritz Seider in Detroit’s defensive pairing, seeing duty against the opposition’s top players. He works the point on the club’s second power-play unit.

Red Wings Return Czarnik

The Red Wings are down to 12 forwards after assigning Austin Czarnik to the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins. The move reduces Detroit’s roster to 22 – three goalies, seven defensemen and 12 forwards – one below the NHL maximum.

At the present time, Lalonde is suggesting that he’s in no hurry to fill the vacancy.

“The five-on-five play has been pretty darn good over three, four, five games now,” Lalonde said. “Will we probably have some different looks potentially up front? Yes. But very happy with all 12 forwards.

“I think why our five-on-five game has been so good of late has been the depth. I think we saw a step in improvement though (Klim) Kostin, (Daniel) Sprong. Ras (Michael Rasmussen) has given us some good minutes.

Or course, all bets are off if Walman is out of action for Wednesday.

“We’ll see where Wally is at for Wednesday,” Lalonde of the potential for recalling a defenseman from the AHL Griffins.
