The Daily: Curious Case of Corey Perry; Red Wings Give Lyon A Shot

If you like an underdog story, the goalie Alex Lyon rise is for you. He is receiving his third start in the past four games for the Detroit Red Wings. It feels as if coach Derek Lalonde is giving him his shot to be more than a No. 3 goalie.

Lyon is 30 and will be making his 42nd appearance in an NHL game. He played 11 games in 2017-18 for the Philadelphia Flyers, and then two in 2018-19, followed by three in 2019-20 and six in 2020-21. In 2021-22, he played two games for the Carolina Hurricanes. Then, last season he played 15 for the Florida Panthers to help them get into the playoffs. He was 9-4-2 for the Panthers with a .914 save percentage.

This may be Lyon’s best shot to play a significant role for an NHL team. If he can play as confidently as he has in his first two outings, who knows how many games he could get with the Red Wings. What the Red Wings want is consistency from their goalies. Maybe he can do that.

Meanwhile, former Detroit Hockey Now writer Nate Brown, now editor of Chicago Hockey Now, is writing about the curious case of Corey Perry. He has left the team for what the Chicago Blackhawks termed as the “foreseeable future.” No explanation has been given. Even  teammates don’t seem to know what has happened. Perry did issue a statement yesterday offering that this is a private matter.
