Detroit Red Wings
Red Wings to Open 2022-23 NHL Season With Historic Game Against Canadiens
For the first time in franchise history, the Detroit Red Wings will open the NHL regular season by playing host to the Montreal Canadiens
The Montreal Canadiens had already been in the NHL for a decade when the Detroit Red Wings – as the Detroit Cougars – came aboard for the 1926-27 season.
In the 95 NHL seasons. the Canadiens and Red Wings have faced off against each other 600 times in regular-season play. However, when they take the ice to open the 2022-23 NHL campaign, it will mark the first time that Detroit will be at home playing the Canadiens in the Red Wings season opener.

Unveiling of he NHL schedule took place on Wednesday. Detroit’s 82-game regular-season slate gets underway Oct. 14 at Little Caesars Arena against the 2021 Stanley Cup finalist Canadiens.
Red Wings Season Openers vs Canadiens
Season | Outcome |
---|---|
1933-34 | Detroit 1 at Montreal 2 |
1941-42 | Detroit 3 at Montreal 2 |
1958-59 | Detroit 0 at Montreal 2 |
1959-60 | Detroit 1 at Montreal 1 |
1965-66 | Detroit 1 at Montreal 8 |
Detroit has opened the season five previous times against the Canadiens – in 1933-34, 1941-42, 1958-59, 1959-60 and 1965-66 – but all of those games were contested in Montreal.
Opening the season against the Habs often has proven to be a blessing for Detroit. Even though the Red Wings are 1-3-1 in those five games, in three of those five seasons – 1933-34, 1941-42 and 1965-66 – Detroit went on to play in the Stanley Cup final.
On the other hand, after launching the 1958-59 season with a 2-0 loss at Montreal, the Red Wings missed the playoffs for the first time since 1937-38.
Red Wings Holiday Tradition Continues
The club’s annual New Year’s Eve and Thanksgiving Eve home games are continuing. Detroit will be facing the Ottawa Senators at LCA on Dec. 31. The Red Wings will also tangle with the Nashville Predators on Nov 23. That game is launching a season-high five-game homestand.
Detroit will also look to scare up a victory on Halloween at Buffalo against the Sabes. The Red Wings were a perfect 4-0 against Buffalo last season. The team’s longest road trip – a five-game, nine-day trip will be starting in Vancouver on Monday, Feb. 13. Prior to that, the Red Wings will enjoy a 10-day break from Jan 27-Feb 7 to accommodate the NHL All-Star Game.
