The Daily: A Tale of Two Red Wings

Former Red Wing Anthony Mantha is in the last year of his contract with the Washington Capitals. He reported to camp at 236 pounds with the hopes of losing a couple more.

“For my body type, it’s not that easy,” Mantha said. “You know, some people just lose weight easily. But that was my goal and I’m not too far from there right now.”

Mantha has struggled since he was traded to the Capitals during the 2020-21 season. Last year, he played in 67 games, the most since 2018-19, but only had 11 goals and 16 assists.

The 29-year-old, who was the Red Wings’ top draft choice in 2013, thinks less weight might lead to more scoring.

“Over my career I played different levels of weight and I think 232 was my best year,” Mantha told Washington Hockey Now. “I wanted to get back there.”
