Defenseman Marc Staal is heading to the Florida Panthers

Fallout from the Detroit Red Wings’ major free agency spending spree included the reality that there was no room on the roster for veteran defenseman Marc Staal.

Staal signed with the Florida Panthers for $750,000, taking a paycut from the $2 million he earned with the Red Wings. The Panthers are also giving his brother, Eric, a Professional Tryout contract (PTO). Eric played last season briefly for the AHL’s Iowa Wild and then for the Canadian Olympic Team.

The Red Wings considered re-signing Staal. He was one of the team’s leaders. Staal was also highly respected for the work effort he brought to every practice.

But the left side of Detroit’s defense is now set with Ben Chiarot, Olli Maatta, rookie Simon Edvinssson and Jordan Oesterle.

Yzerman’s five Wednesday signings also probably means Sam Gagner won’t be coming. back, although that has not been officially confirmed. The Red Wings’ roster seems full, but Yzerman may not be done with his changes.
