The hat wasn’t quite right, and the sport was wrong, but Alex DeBrincat was representing when he was introduced as the newest member of the Detroit Red Wings.

DeBrincat was purposefully wearing a Detroit Pistons hat as he met the media for the first time. DeBrincat was traded to Detroit Sunday night for a first- and fourth-round pick, Dominik Kubalik and Donovan Sebrango.

“It’s super exciting obviously,” said DeBrincat. “Growing up here and rooting for the Red Wings when I was younger, it’s definitely a dream come true. I do have to say I don’t think anyone’s happier than my parents. It’s the whole family. Everyone’s happy. It’s a good spot for me. ”

DeBrincat grew up in Farmington Hills and that’s where he started playing youth hockey.

“I played for the Farmington Hills Fire for quite a few years at Farmington Hills Ice Arena, so that rink is pretty special,” DeBrincat said. “Then I moved on to play for Victory Honda, which I’ve trained at for the past couple of years, too. Going to that gym and skating there. Those rinks are obviously special to me. I’ve had a lot of good memories there. It’s just nice to be back here and enjoy this.”

Always a Red Wings Fan

Among DeBrincat’s favorite childhood memories was watching his favorite player Pavel Datsyuk and rooting for the Red Wings when they won the Stanley Cup in 2008. He was 11 then.

His Red Wings fandom also included the latter stages of Steve Yzerman’s career. That’s why it was special when Yzerman called him yesterday after the negotiations with the agent had been completed.

“It was awesome,” DeBrincat said. “Obviously we found out everything was going to be done. He called me a little later last night and we just chatted for a couple of minutes. I just told him I’m really excited to be here. I’m excited for the opportunity that this team is giving me. He just kind of went through what would kind of be our team, what it’s like. It was a good chat.”

Will Wear No. 93

DeBrincat was in Michigan when he received the call that trade was finalized. In recent years, DeBrincat has come home in the offseason. His wife is from Clarkson. Of course she is.

DeBrincat likes the state. Before the deal happened, he played golf with Dylan Larkin and they talked about the situation. He comes home bullish on his new team. He could end up playing with Larkin, although nothing has really been discussed. But Larkin is the best center and DeBrincat is now the most proven scorer. He has averaged 31 goals per season.

“Obviously early in my career it was deep in the rebuild and in these last couple of years you can see that the compete level is definitely been higher,” DeBrincat said. “You see a team that’s frustrated maybe with being in a rebuild and wants to get out. I’m excited to be here and join in that and hopefully be part of the solution to get out of that. I’m just really excited to join these guys and I definitely see the potential in this group.”

He will wear No. 93 on the Red Wings because No. 12, the number he wore in Ottawa, belonged to the legendary Sid Abel. It’s retired. He wore No. 12 for Victory Honda.

“I’m definitely confident in my abilities,” DeBrincat said. “I think that this team is a good fit for me. Hopefully we can get back into the playoffs. Obviously that’s everyone’s goal. Hopefully it’s sooner rather than later. We just gotta keep growing as a team and just putting in the work to get back there.”

Defenseman Troy Stecher is so happy to be playing again this season that he isn’t thinking about where he could end up next season.

“I had some friends back home ask me the same question and it’s like, ‘I’ve been out for three months, all I really want to do is play hockey,.” Stecher said.

But when he does think about his future he will recall that he wasn’t in the Red Wings’ top six at the start of the season.

“I wasn’t happy I wasn’t playing,” he admitted. “When you come back from a summer and put in all that work and don’t get to start playing it’s obviously disappointing. When I got back in, I tried to take a lot of pride in my game. I felt I was coming out strong. Obviously I got injured, so that was unfortunate. Just excited to be back in the mix. Whether I’m playing or not, I got to push the guys, push our teammates, be the best teammate I can be and when I am playing try to be the best I can be.”

Detroit Red Wings fans may like the romance of acquiring Buffalo Sabres center Jack Eichel more than the reality of what it would take to complete a trade.

New York Post sportswriter Larry Brooks has reported that the New York Rangers have talked to the Sabres about Eichel. According to Brooks, “the Sabres want at least four pieces that would be equivalent of first-rounders in exchange for Eichel.”

Brooks said he isn’t sure whether the Rangers are seriously interested in Eichel or just investigating what it would take. According to Brooks, the Rangers previously talked to the Sabres after about a trade when Jeff Gorton was GM but talks broke off when the Sabres wanted the Rangers No. 1 pick. That pick became Alexis Lafreniere.

Five known teams interested in Eichel

The Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild are the other teams that have been linked to trade talks about Eichel. No one has reported the Red Wings are involved in talks. But Brooks’ reporting gives us an idea of what it might cost for the Red Wings to become involved in trade talks.

Presuming the reporting is accurate, you could envision the Sabres asking for the Red Wings two first round picks, plus Lucas Raymond and Filip Zadina. (We will assume that the Sabres realize the Red Wings aren’t going to give up Moritz Seider).

You don’t like that much, do you? That would disrupt the “Yzerplan” to build this team, right?

How about the first-round picks, plus Dennis Cholowski and Michael Rasmussen?

Better?

What if the Sabres asked to switch Tyler Bertuzzi for Cholowski? Bertuzzi wasn’t a first rounder, but he is a first-round equivalent. If not Bertuzzi, how about Joe Veleno?

Eichel is a proven No. 1 center

You are probably getting the idea the Sabres want a bountiful return for Eichel. The number of assets is a difficult ask of a rebuilding team. Four first-round equivalents is at least two years of rebuilding

Just a reminder that these are fictional offers. We are not reporting the Red Wings are pursuing Eichel. This is an exercise designed to illustrate what it would cost to land Eichel if the Red Wings were interested. The offers are made up to fit the New York Post narrative that the Sabres want four players who are first-round equivalents.

Eichel was the No. 2 pick in the 2015 draft, and averaged 27 goals per season for five years. He was injured last season, and has completed his rest and rehabilitation for a disk injury. Brooks reported the Sabres haven’t yet allowed teams access to his medical record. Presumably, that would come if sides get close to a deal.

The lure of Eichel for the Red Wings would be that he could become the team’s No. 1 center and Dylan Larkin could be the No. 2 center. Eichel has five years remaining on a contract that averages $10 million.

When Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman agreed to be a third party in the three-team trade that moved defenseman David Savard from the Columbus Blue Jackets to the Tampa Bay Lightning it was not a difficult decision.

The Red Wings picked up a fourth-round pick because they took about a $1 million of Savard’s salary to help the Lightning fit it under the salary cap. Because it was only a partial season salary cap hit, there was no impact on Detroit’s competitiveness.

Details of the deal

The trade broke down like this

Columbus received 2021 first-round pick (from Tampa Bay), 2022 third-round pick (from Tampa Bay)

Detroit received 2021 fourth-round pick (from Tampa Bay)

Tampa Bay received  David Savard (from Columbus), Brian Lashoff (from Detroit)

Here is how the three teams got to that point:

Columbus initially traded Savard to the Red Wings for Brian Lashoff and retained 50% of Savard’s remaining salary.

The Red Wings then sent Savard to Tampa Bay for a fourth-round pick and retained 50 % of his remaining salary from the original move with Columbus.

Tampa Bay then sent the two draft picks to Columbus for Lashoff.

All of that maneuvering means Tampa Bay received Savard at roughly 25% of his salary

For Detroit, It was like buying a fourth round pick.

Deal could be model for bigger deals

Yzerman could be asked to be the third party in a bigger three-team swap this summer that will be a much bigger decision.

Teams with some undesirable contracts will ask the expansion Seattle Kraken to take their contract. Seattle will have plenty of cap space, and could end up needing some expensive salary cap hits to reach the salary cap floor.

Think about the Edmonton Oilers trying to persuade Seattle to take James Neal’s final two seasons at $5.75 million per season or Tampa Bay trying to get Seattle to take Tyler Johnson’s four remaining seasons at $5 million. How about the Nashville Predators asking Seattle to take the final four years of Ryan Johansen’s $8 million deal.

Could Nashville shed Johansen’s salary?

Seattle probably wouldn’t want Johansen’s $8 million, but what if the Predators retained $1 million in salary and the Red Wings retained $2 million.  (Technically, Nashville would trade Johansen to Detroit and the Red Wings would move him to Seattle)  You see where we are going here.

Yzerman has cap space, and has expressed a willingness to take a bad contract. His team won’t be competitive for at least two more seasons so time is on his side. But four years is probably longer than Yzerman wants to go.

It might give him pause. It will depend on what the reward would be for his participation. Obviously, he’s not going to make that kind of deal for a fourth rounder. He would be looking for  a notable young player, multiple draft picks or a first round deal.

Taking Tyler Johnson’s contract would also be easier if the Red Wings took $1.5 million of the salary. The Neal deal would be easier to accomplish..

Creativity is crucial in moving salary. And it helps to have cap space you don’t need right now.

Don’t expect a bountiful draft harvest after Round 3

When it comes to the NHL draft,  picks outside the first three rounds haven’t helped the Red Wings all that much over the past couple of decades.

Since the 2000 draft, the Red Wings have only had seven draft choices outside the third round play 200 or more games in the NHL. The later-round success stories:

2012: Forward Andreas Athanasiou (fourth round, No. 110): has played 350 games for the Red Wings, Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings.

2010: Goalie Petr Mrazak (fifth round, No. 141) has played 275 games for the Red Wings, Philadelphia Flyers and Carolina Hurricanes.

2009: Defenseman Nick Jensen (fifth round, No. 150) has played 331 games for the Red Wings and Washington Capitals.

2008: Left wing Gustav Nyquist (fourth round, No. 121) has played 570 games for the Red Wings, San Jose Sharks and Columbus Blue Jackets.

2005: Left wing Darren Helm (fifth round, No. 132) has played 744 games for the Red Wings

2001: Defenseman Jonathan Ericsson (ninth round, No. 291) played 680 games for the Red Wings

From around the Hockey Now Network

Pittsburgh:  Dan Kingerski writes the “winning feeling is gone from the fan base” in Pittsburgh

Boston:  Joe Haggerty offers that the Bruins could be looking to move power forward Peter Chelarik after his strong showing for Slovakia at the World Championships.

Denver: With the Colorado Avalanche one loss away from elimination, Adrian Dater writes the Avs still have a chance to prove that they are not another “pretty, but not gritty” team.
